Isle of Dogs set for UK’s third tallest skyscraper after planners approve City Pride scheme
http://www.eastlondonadvertiser.co.u...heme_1_2290834

Quote:
The third tallest skyscraper in the UK is to be built on the Isle of Dogs after two massive new developments for the area were approved by planning chiefs.

In a decision branded a “total disgrace” by campaigners, Tower Hamlets Council’s planning committee gave the green light to a 75-storey, 239 metre tower on the site of the old City Pride pub in Westferry Road.

The tower - dwarfed only by the Shard and Canary Wharf in height – is set to provide more than 800 new homes, with 37 per cent of those designated as social housing.

Chair of the council’s development committee Cllr Helal Abbas, who used his deciding vote to approve the scheme after a split ballot, said: “The borough has an acute shortage of affordable rental properties.

“Faced with a choice of social housing or high tower blocks the committee felt social housing was a priority and that we should support this scheme.”

The skyscraper will include a roof garden, a cinema and a children’s play area.

A series of 173 low-rise residential blocks were also approved by the committee as part of the Island Point development in Westferry Road at Thursday’s meeting. In June, planners deferred reaching a decision on the scheme, citing overdevelopment in the area.

Cllr David Snowden, who represents Millwall, pledged to look at every available avenue to block the development.

“It’s a total disgrace,” he said. “There’s a housing need across London but it needs to be provided in the right way.

“You cannot keep building more and more housing without looking at transport provision and health and education facilities.”

Work on the site can now begin once developer Chalegrove Properties Ltd signs legal agreements with Tower Hamlets Council detailing conditions for planning approval.

The developer said: “Chalegrove Properties Ltd are delighted to have the opportunity to regenerate these two strategically important sites and deliver much needed quality affordable family housing, as well as an exciting new iconic landmark for both London and the Isle of Dogs.”

Has anything been approved regarding airports in/around London?
Will Heathrow build a new runway, will Gatwick expand or will a whole new airport be built?
Whatever happens it needs to happen sharpish.

Already posted on page 351. We're faster than the media on such matters

Thanks for the contribution.

All proposals are being submitted to the Davies Commission, which will then detail an appropriate course of action.

Ah yes thank you, a quick Google search tells me that the deadline has since passed a few days ago. An initial report will be released later this year with the final report in 2015.
I guess no construction will take place until at least 2016 then. Although with such a large project it pays to take your time.
Boris Island seems a bit of a white elephant and one of Boris Johnsons fantasies, looks very nice though.

Basically, don't hold your breath. It's a huge political hot potato which nobody really wants to deal with.

City Pride is 233m not 239m. One Canada Square is only 235 meters, the media keep cocking it up.

I believe some areas won't be easy to recognise in two decades.

Exactly, music, theatre, finance, art, film, media, science, medicine, community, culture.... London and New York are true sister cities their hearts beat the same tune. One just happens to be a Skyscraper city, the other a historical one.

There's a reason that the 1 billion US embassy is being built in London and not somewhere else.

Call me old fashioned but its kinda traditional to build embassies outside of your own country... All this implies is that we Brits are cheapskates when it comes to our embassy buildings

^ He's referring to the $1bn embassy being built in London, not a regular spec embassy.
