Believe me, as someone who has lived in both London and LA, working in the film industry for 25 years, there is no comparison.

I don't want to continue to take this thread off topic so I've said all I'm going to say on the matter.
I don't want to drag you back in, but am I right in thinking television filming and production is the main driver in LA, not films? Certainly London must be completely dwarfed in that area, especially since British filming isn't centralised.

This is quite similar to the Silicon Valley vs London debate.

It will be very interesting to see how it all pans out.

Ha! You dragged me back in! Damn.

In terms of film production, it's not a perfect analogy but I'd liken movie making to the tip of the iceberg. Television, commercials, music videos, corporate videos etc. account for the vast majority.

To be fair, America's television industry isn't centralised either. And LA is losing out to other north American cities for this work too. But it's still the biggest, single centre of film and television production.

There's no doubt that Hollywood is suffering and that it will have to reinvent itself in the coming years to counter the twin threats of other cities' / countries' tax incentives and their growing workforce of skilled technicians. But I see no reason why it shouldn't do so - especially since, as I said, the real power and money within the global film industry remains in Los Angeles.

And on the flip side of this argument, while London is currently benefitting from the tax incentives that the UK government offers to Hollywood studios, the competition from elsewhere to attract them is intense. There will come a point when either London cannot compete on price or these incentives become ridiculous and counter productive, economically.

We'll agree to disagree. You say you're in the know and believe it's not right then there's others in the know who believe it is right. They'll never be a winner if that's the case so we'll see how it Peter pans out over the next few years.

There's a difference between production and post production.

In terms of production. Yes the UK has a large and very professional set of studios and workers... But like JimB says ... Not on the same level as the US by a long way.

Post production however... and the UK, mostly London has easily rivalled, perhaps even surpassed the US.

I'd wager that people will [eventually] come to understand that it's not all zero-sum

The design was changed over 5 years ago (statement dated September 2008), to provide more residential units and reduce the cinema from 6 screens to 4.

A perfect example of the post recession world. Prior to the global economic collapse, these elaborate proposals were focused on Dubai. After 2009, international investors have come to realized that their money is much better off invested in a stable global financial center rather one built on speculation.
