How quick projects break ground in London has got to be 6-12 months faster than the rest of the UK. It's quite ridiculous. Love London City Island.

Shouldn't that be Tower Hamlets (even though it will be connected to CT station with a footbridge)? It's on west bank of Bow Creek and they even use E14 in their logo.

I didn't say anything about a Cityscape and neither was it implied in the original comment.

Oh man.... you seriously mis-read things Sir. Congrats.

That was your comment, Sir.

That's exactly what I'm chalking up to many SSC users. Yeah, we all are excited about new projects and towers. But when we as the public don't consider things like urban integration, vitality, genius loci, proper mixes of use, sustainable and high-quality architecture - then developers won't either.

Not churning up a second phase of the chewy discussion, but it needs to be brought up constantly that not every development is 100% perfect, as some comments imply.

^ Uhm no, definitely not cool. Those are ugly cities. Erbse's talking nonsense though. We could only become Sao Paulo or Shenzhen if we destroyed our rich architectural inheritance. But we aren't doing anything of the sort, so his eulogy is read over an empty grave.

Shenzhen will be a masterpiece in 5-10 years so take it as a compliment.

I was in Shenzhen about 5 years ago. It was quite amazing to see such a relatively young city looking so massive. I was blown away by the amount of development and the energy of the bit of China I saw. And it's not just the sheer scale that's impressive, they also blend the old with the new. Sorry, I'm a passionate Londoner, but the wasted opportunities of new developments are almost as numerous as its successes. If you want to see a city that does it well go to Xaimen, an inhabited monastery on the hillside with miles of a colonial type townscape set around a bay, a modern city with parks and all set in a coherent uncontrived way.....shame about their human rights record!

I think Shenzhen's horrid. There's not a single beautiful district, and no attractive streets. It's even hard to find individually beautiful buildings. There are a lot of really ghastly designs - as vulgar, kitsch, and tacky as Dubai - and most are shoddily built, visibly ageing just a few years after completion. Even the landmark towers are clad in ubiquitous cheap dingy-dark green glass. It's not pretty. Would you ever paint your room or wear clothes that colour? Shenzhen has no history, no culture, no identity, and no sense of place. Not my kind of town, sorry.

Ever been there ? And maybe experienced an ageing building ? Was wandering if I can trust your thoughts in case I need to have a personal opinion on Shenzhen.
Also was wandering if UK historical heritage is more valuable than chinese heritage ?
Only for my knowledge, thanks.

^ Yes, I've been to Shenzhen three times, and to dozens of other Chinese cities in the last two decades.

As for premature ageing, I saw buildings under construction on one trip, and returned a few years later to find them already aged by seeming decades. And these weren't obscure buildings in small places, but major landlarks in China's leading cities. Shoddy construction in China is hardly news. Just Google it.

I have no problem with Chinese architectural heritage. In fact I love it. However there's absolutely zero in Shenzhen. It's an entirely new city, and is built entirely in modern "western" styles.

If all we got out of the Olympics was the aquatics centre and the velopark, I'd consider it a success. Amazing buildings.
