Well I'm quite sure that the first skyscrapers in an area always stand out, until new ones join the cluster. I wouldn't worry too much. Take for example Natwest and the Gherkin, it was just them two, and that's been changing rapidly. Take Strata, it used to be on it's own and now there's soon gonna be 3-4 more that will form a nice little cluster.

Just to note to anyone not fully aware of the Heathrow and Gatwick plans that the two are competing for permission from the Airport Commission to build the UK's next runway, so either Gatwick OR Heathrow will be built, not both.

I'm sure the people of croydon will be glad to see it built in their borough.

I suppose anyone here agrees that the Gherkin has a far superior design, though.

Heathrow's expansion is huge but needed, to me. Are there going to be works on the large junction between M25 and M4 according to the plannign application? Because I can't really tell from that render.

Yeah the Gherkin and the Heron look good.

Personally, I think they should allow both airport projects to take place, there sure is the capacity needed.

Yeah, two large airports are needed for sure.

I'm just not sure about all the other ones. Anyone have a guess if any of the other airports would close if both expansion projects were to be carried out?

I personally don't like Luton, and I think the space taken up by City Airport could be used better (even though I recognize it's convenient).

Other large cities like NYC and Tokyo have multiple large airports and yet could still do with more capacity. As for closure Id say Luton and Southend would be the most likely to face the axe. I too don't like Luton as an airport and only used it a couple of times in my life.

I'm starting to favour the idea of the new airport east of London, with an extra runway at Gatwick. Expanding Heathrow will cause too many problems in the future.

That's irrelevant to what you said before, though.
You said it'll stand out, not that the quality will be worse than that of the Gherkin.

Anyway, Croydon is not the city of London so we can't expect same standards.
I find it decent and much better than all the random cladding or plastic new builds, thus it's more than welcome.

But this won't be on its own. There are at least half a dozen towers in the immediate vicinity that have approved plans or plans being worked up. Croydon already has a fairly dense skyline anyway (although not many buildings are over 20 floors).

Principle Place will certainly help stretch the skyline a bit. Looks great.
