I think it's funny how they often seem to erect the whole core of a tower first in London,
as seen at the Baltimore Tower construction. Why's that?

It varies by project. For instance, at One The Elephant the core was paused at level 22 for a month to allow the floorplates to catch up.

At Providence Tower, Canaletto and Saffron Square, the floorplates follow the core relatively closely.

Without trying to be pedantic a lot of people still seem to be getting confused with Canary Wharf and the wider Isle of Dogs which maybe causing confusion to those who thinks it’s all in the CWG development pipeline.

Canary Wharf is the business district under the ownership of CWG (Canary Wharf Group) which obviously gets its name from the Canary Wharf. The whole CWG estate runs north up to North Quay and to the towers along Bank St. Most of the residential towers are in the wider Isle of Dogs (as Is Canary Wharf) such as Millharbour and Crossharbour and South Quay or Poplar and have nothing to do with CWG or Canary Wharf and are separate developments.

It should help to understand that many of the resi towers in the area are not dependent or aligned to the Canary Wharf (Group) pipeline at Canary Wharf but respond more to what is happening in London generally.

I've always thought a simple map indicating the location of a project in relation to others would help a good deal with putting each individual project in context.

Well if we are being pedantic, the Isle of Dogs ends at South Quay. Above that is Poplar/ Blackwall. That's where most of the developments in the Canary Wharf area are planned. From my list, only Baltimore Tower, 40 Marsh Wall and Arrowhead Quay are on the Isle.

Relax I wasn't singling you out. I have always been under the assumption the Ilse of Dogs has been more or less the area outlined in Red which Tower Hamlets define as the Isle of Dogs.

Canary Wharf Groups estate for those interested (although their map is a bit dated as it doesn't include Wood Wharf).

http://www.canarywharf.com/workwithu...te/Estate-Map/

Practically evey resi tower proposal in the area is nothing to do with CWG except the Diamond Tower and those at Wood Wharf.

I think it's true to say that the area covers more than one geographic boundary. If you refer to the area as a whole as the Isle of Dogs I can understand that. Personally I've always known it as Canary Wharf as that is the core area, with everything else being over-spill from the estate. This is much like the City of London being a core, which spills over into Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Islington.

And wow that 3D model is out of date. Heron Quays will look very different, 25 Churchill Place is now a taller different design, no Diamond Tower, no One Park Place and as you said, no Wood Wharf. I'm convinced that it's only a matter of time before the estate expands to the Billingsgate Fish Market site as well.

Are Londoners really making the Isle of Dogs-Canary Wharf distinction?

I had a go at plotting all the potential projects in Canary Wharf since someone was asking. This includes everything planned on the original estate, and even projects such as 50 Marsh Wall, Thames Quay and Millharbour North and South, none of which have made it past the drawing board yet. I would have included a Key, but it wouldn't be legible on the image.

CW plots by corerising, on Flickr

I might have even missed a few projects.

Yeah, the number of projects planned is incredible.

There are three plots that could see new towers in the future that I didn't include. 225 Marsh wall, Project Skylines and the Cuba Street Towers, all of which I think have been rejected by Tower Hamlets in recent years, and will no doubt see new proposals for those sites in due course.

Yes. Canary Wharf is a metonym at this point. Nobody in London confuses the two.
