Zac v Sadiq: the race to become London’s next mayor
Financial Times
22 April 2016

Quote:
Sadiq Khan looks like a man who thinks he is about to achieve something remarkable.

Pumped up and sprinting from door to door, the diminutive Labour candidate is scouring the streets of south London for votes — the votes he hopes will make him the first Muslim mayor of a major western city. He leaps on to a wall in Battersea on a rare bright spring day to make the improbable claim: “As a mayor for all Londoners, the sun will shine throughout London.”

“I love this city, it has made me who I am,” the scrappy son of a Pakistani-born bus driver says during a break in the relentless campaigning. “It has given us the chance to fulfil our potential. This is the London story. What’s the deal? You work hard, you get a helping hand, you can achieve anything.”

The fact that he is a Muslim seeking high office in a western city at a time of heightened tension over Islamist extremist terrorism in nearby Brussels and Paris does not seem to have harmed his campaign so far. Indeed, at the time of writing, and despite feverish Brexit-stimulated debates about national identity, bookmakers are offering odds of 1/9 on him winning the mayoral contest on May 5 — more or less a dead cert.

Worth a visit for anyone in the Guildhall vicinity:

Visit this incredible model of central London, newly opened

For many years, a wonderful secret has resided in a basement beneath the Guildhall.

This highly detailed 3D model of London, used by planners, developers and architects, has been off-limits to the public, except for rare open days. From 23 April it will be freely open every week for anyone who cares to take a look.

Nowt to do with me, all about entoptika's photos. He actually posted a bunch more, as per normal procedure for this thread I chose a small highlight package but it's worth looking at the dusk series in full.
