Tate Modern Project | Bankside SE1

London forum thread: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=377117

Official website: http://www.tate.org.uk/about/project...modern-project

Project facts
  • Extension to the world's most visited gallery of modern art
  • London borough: Southwark
  • Architect: Herzog & de Meuron
  • Cost: £215 million ($305m)
  • Height: 65m
  • Floors: 11

The Tate Modern's new Switch House has opened, attracting record crowds.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36580748

Quote:
Tate said there had been 143,000 visits since the revamped and expanded modern art gallery opened on Friday.

On Saturday alone there were more than 54,000 visits - around double the usual visitor number and the highest ever attendance for a single day.

A new extension, a pyramid-like tower called the Switch House, increases the size of Tate Modern by 60%.

The structure, boasting panoramic views of London, was part of a £260m redevelopment project.

Great news on the new tower!

Atkins bags job to green £26bn London Old Oak scheme

Atkins has bagged the contract to make London’s largest planned scheme at Old Oak and Park Royal one of the UK’s most sustainable urban developments.

The £26bn Old Oak and Park Royal project is expected to eventually deliver 25,500 homes and is five times bigger than the King’s Cross development in central London.

Atkins, working with Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation and its cost consultant, Faithful+Gould, will set of ambitious environmental sustainability targets.

Sean Lockie, sustainability director, Faithful+Gould, said: “Old Oak and Park Royal is a massive opportunity for London to do things that haven’t been done before.

“It means creating a vision which sets out clear goals, such as being healthy to live in, flexible over time, affordable, comfortable, and being energy and resource efficient, and then taking a systematic approach to delivery.

“We’ll need to come up with some new business models to achieve this but in doing so we have a great opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives.”

I'm so glad we'll get to see Centre Point again. I hate seeing it with all the scaffolding.

I'm just as interested in the improved public realm. People might finally see the building in a new light if they don't have to avoid traffic when looking at it.
