I agree. It might sound strange but the facade reminds me of a vaffel. So basically it looks very tasty.

One of the best projects of this year^

The materials and craftsmanship are fantastic, and they way they incorporated and restored an entire council tower in the final product is innovative.

168 Upper Street | Islington N1

https://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/...685872.article

Project facts
Address: 168 Upper Street, Islington, N1
London borough: Islington
Architect: Amin Taha

This is a fascinating project that appears to have slipped under the radar. Amin Taha are re-building a long lost end of terrace that was destroyed by a WWII bomb. They laser scanned the existing building and used old photos to recreate the facade using an innovative moulding process. The main structure is made completely out of wood. The scaffold has only just been taken down so I do not have a photo of the finished product yet but I must say from walking past it looks spectacular.

Quote:
‘Our approach was to rebuild the missing piece of an otherwise intact symmetrical terrace but as a digitally measured and reconstructed monolithic terracotta monument to the past. Cast in situ with formwork routed from a 3-d model the detailing is mostly a 1:1 laser surveyed simulacrum of its symmetrical opposite with some areas allowed fall away as if slipped from our memory and others misremembered. As a whole the ‘casting’ forms a perimeter shell from basement through six floors with roof also cast of the same material.

‘Internally, dado rails, ceiling cornices, skirting boards and anaglyptic wall paper are all allowed to imprint a palimpsest of previous occupants. Neoclassical windows remain blind with only the new inhabitation, expressed by intermittent timber floor plates, cutting through the terracotta walls where needed.’

I haven't seen the finished article, but I was impressed with what I saw whilst it was under construction.

Sets a very good standard for halls of residence in the city.
