but I think Bangkok was more friendly and more exotic in the past. Even though it looked awful it really had its charm, eating food at new light in siamsquare, sit in a dirty taxi in a long long smelly traffic on the way to a nice restaurant. The hotels was like paradise coming out of the hotel was horrible but very exiting and fun. I dont know, I just think Bangkok was more like a romantic chaotic, dirty, friendly city, compare to now it is more westernized, thai people start to act rude like westerners and the respect for everyone and the smile seems to have fade away now after all these modernisation.

Good observation Ray. I miss many things about old Bangkok too. In someway it changed for the better, in someways I wish things stay the same.

There are many good things worth reminiscing. Everyone will have different stories to tell. For me I'll always remember the old fresh markets in Bangkok especially markets at Pratunam, Prakanong/Khlongton and Bangkapi.

Eating places were everywhere in the old day. There was a huge market where Pratunam complex is atm. You can find noodle stalls everywhere along Rajaparob Road to Soi Rangnam. A bowl of noodle cost ten baht. There's a nice restauruant opposite Pata Dept store called "Isan Classic". They have the best isan food in town!!! The best place to have "Suki" was at City Center building (next to Amari Watergate), that was even before MK Suki became popular.
And did I mention Tamnak Thai in Huay Kwang? it used to be the largest restaurant in the world. The waiters come to serve your food in their rollerskates!!

Back then Mah boon krong was the biggest shopping center in town. I used to wonder around Duang Kamol and Satita bookshop on the 3rd floor of MBK plus other shops that sell comic and "Maeng Pong" videos. The ceiling at Duang Kamol bookshop was really low. But it was quite cosy. I remember the cinema at MBK used to be on the ground floor.
Siam area was trendy but not so busy as now. There's some nice ice cream shops on the top floor at Siam center. I also used to hang out at Pantip Plaza's soccer shop and the model making shop. There used to be antique store on the ground floor at Pantip before any computer stores were there!! amazing!
So many fond memories of old Bangkok or am I becoming an old man?

Never been to Tamnak Thai. I was sad that it was torn down.
At Royal Dragon, Bang Na, the waiters also serve food in their rollerskates.
Same owner, I think.

yeh I remember that amusement park on top of MBK there's also a food court on the top that you have to buy coupons.
Duang Kamol = DK books. There used to be many stores around, another DK store I used to go to was north of Makkasan railway crossing, a soi off Rajaparob with a cinema at the end of the soi (not sure if it's still there)

hopefully history is going to repeat itself in greater magnitude

I got a feeling it will go back for the better again at street level. It would be great if one day the traffic was routed through a tunnel, big dig style, and we'll get a park on top.

Almost Boston Bigdig?, but Bangkok BigDig

The city traffic must turn in to a real Hell while the construction going on. Just cant imagine.
