INCHEON: Incheon Tower (609.6 m/2000ft, 151 fl.)

A very impressive tower is proposed:

Portman tower in S. Korea to be among world's tallest

By WALTER WOODS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 02/07/06

Legendary Atlanta developer John Portman — who inspired the novel "A Man in Full" and who built Atlanta landmarks like SunTrust Plaza and the Westin Peachtree Plaza — plans to erect one of the tallest buildings in the world halfway around the globe.

Portman's Atlanta-based company, Portman Holdings, has signed an agreement with South Korean officials to build a 1,500-acre, $11 billion residential, office and hotel complex about 20 miles from Seoul. The project's centerpiece, Incheon Tower, would be a 151-story, 2,000-foot skyscraper to rival the world's tallest structures.

The tallest building in the world is Taiwan's Taipei 101 building, which is 1,671 feet tall, according to Emporis, a real estate research firm. It was built in 2004.

The Burj Dubai, a 2,300-foot, mixed-use tower under construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, will be the tallest tower in the world when it opens in 2008.

For some comparison, Atlanta's tallest building — Peachtree Street's Bank of America Plaza — is 1,023 feet.

With the World Trade Center's demise in 2001, the tallest buildings in the United States are Chicago's Sears Tower, built in 1974, and New York's iconic Empire State Building, which opened in 1931.

Portman's project is part of a recent boom in super-high skyscrapers built in the Far East. Seven of the world's 10 tallest buildings are Asian towers built over the last decade.

Portman Holdings has built a number of hotels and mixed-use projects in Asia, including towers in Shanghai, China, and Singapore.

The Incheon Tower project is expected to open by 2010.

Founded in 1953, Portman's development and architecture firm has built and designed many of Atlanta's signature projects, including SunTrust Plaza, the city's second-tallest building, Peachtree Center and the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.

A legend in local development circles, Portman was said to be one of the models for Charlie Croker, the development tycoon in "A Man in Full," Tom Wolfe's 1998 novel about Atlanta.

But it looks OK.

I don't understand this build a 2000'/600m giant now, and then a skyline around it later concept. Especially in South Korea.

Consortium Vows to Assist Development of New Songdo City

Highlights from another article with more detail:

By Chuck Green
February 7, 2006 09:05am

New Songdo City, the long talked-about mixed-use project in Incheon, South Korea, is gathering more heavyweight US names. The New Jersey-based Gale Co. was first on board with the plan. Now add Portman to the list.

.......Monday signed a memorandum of understanding to participate in the development of the massive development, a master-planned 1,500 acres of reclaimed land from the Yellow Sea in Songdo, South Korea. An Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), the land is part of a new suburb on the eastern side of Incheon.

.......officials said more than 2.9 million square meters of multi-use space will be developed at an estimated cost of more than $11 billion, on a phased basis. The preliminary vision for the project, located in District Six and Eight of Songdo, is a multi-use development, one of the three areas in IFEZ inside the Incheon Metropolitan City limit.

.......Portman CEO John C. Portman, whose firm will be lead developer of the consortium, which will include a number of Korean companies, said the 1,500-acre site, “is one and a half times the size” of New York City’s Central Park. Portman went on to say that the centerpiece of the concept plan is the 151-story Incheon Tower, which will include offices, hotel, retail and housing. The planned structure, officials indicated, will be the tallest in Northeast Asia. It also will be one of the project’s primary early challenges, noted Portman.

“The financing, tenant and technical challenges will be among our biggest,” Portman said. “But we agreed as a group on a strategy of how to go about that, and we’re beginning right away.” Portman, however, declined from discussing any impending strategy.

Portman said Mayor Ahn wanted the building to make a statement. “He suggested that there needed to be a very tall building there,” Portman said. “He threw out the number 150. After I caught my breath, I told him that was a good idea,” Portman laughed. But the mayor had more in mind. “He said 150 stories doesn’t sound so good; 151 sounds a lot better.”

The development will be a planned, integrated community, featuring upscale office, commercial and residential structures, in addition to a number of specialty developments, including cultural facilities, a marina and other urban buildings. With the adjacent International Business district, currently under development by New Songdo City Development, LLC, the development is expected to become the landmark of IFEZ, as well as a world-class hub city.

.......Discussions are under way for the Portman Consortium to include Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. and other major construction companies to build the project. According to terms of the agreement, a comprehensive plan will be presented to the Incheon government within six months. Estimated completion is in 2010.

This is different from any other super tall skyscrapers that have been proposed in South Korea.

This actually seems like its going to be constructed because

1. Its supported by the government

2. Its in Songdo where there isn't a height restriction

Really nice, but how serious is that??

I think these proposed towers over 500 meters will be serious, if Burj Dubai is done. And then this is the height which is to beat!!!

Wwww! A 610 m tower! That isn't everyday news, you know! Go South Korea

On second thought, this is what they should build at ground zero.

awesome project.

the other towers look nice too, but what is it with this trend to build twisted skyscrapers? the UN center reminds me of towers in sweden, turkey and u.a.e.
