It looks like it's overtaken the Gherkin now, in terms of height?

I would say it has, since there's only 3 floors to go until it reaches 202m, then it must be around 185-190m just now. So yeah, looks like it's now the City's tallest.

Shapoor - those 2 pictures are incredible - you've captured the Heron tower in your own style - the b/W one is possibly one of the best I've seen of the tower - you really should post them on the UK forum .

Those photos are beyond incredible

I had to pop up to the London Independent Hospital this evening (Stepney Green), and there's a fantastic view of Heron afforded looking up the Whitechapel Road. No camera / tripod though unfortunately

Norwich firm works on UK's tallest tower
PAUL HILL, BUSINESS EDITOR
Last updated: 18/12/2009 06:58:00

Heron Tower in London under construction
A £1.5m deal to build a staircase for what will be the UK's tallest skyscraper has helped push an East Anglian engineering firm to new heights this year.

Hubbard Architectural Metalwork has been working on a 12 month project to build a feature staircase for the 47-floor Heron Tower, under construction in the heart of London's Square Mile.

The Heron Tower project is one of a series won by Norwich-based Hubbard this year, including deals to supply steel balcony units for a block in the Olympic Village at Stratford and a project a Caspian Wharf in London.

Work is already under way on projects for the residential development One Hyde Park in London and another housing project for Watford Football Club.

The firm, which has an 80-strong workforce and is based in Hurricane Way at the Airport Industrial Estate, said it expected turnover to rise to £5.85m this year - a rise of about 4pc on 2008.

Work on the Heron Tower project is due to be completed in March and will see Hubbard build 25 stair units, each about eight metres tall, to service each floor.

Each unit is built at Hurricane Way before being taken by lorry to Ripbast at Snetterton for painting - then on to London for installation.

Managing director Tony Hubbard said: "This project has yet again raised the bar for us and I have been very pleased with the way we and our suppliers have stepped up the mark.

"So far 17 units have been installed without any issues, which is a testament to the skills of our employees."

When construction of the Heron Tower is complete in 2011, it will stand 246 metres from ground to the top of its communication mast.

Actually, yes I think you're right. But if we're counting steel only, then Heroins spire/needle makes up for it too!

Uhoh, I don't want to open this can of worms....
