London doesn't need skyscrapers to compete with New York, but it is still building some of the best in the world.

I couldn't agree more and how could NY compete with London? They are two completly distinct cities, each one with its positive and negative aspects. You can't compare them.

Have you visited or lived in both cities? Would be interesting to know...

Care to elaborate on that? Do you mean London's skyline has nothing on New York's? Because that's true but if you mean London as a city has nothing on New York then you're talking rubbish. London is the best city in the world for me. And I have lived in New York...

But hey that's just my opinion.

Not to take away from New York, which certainly does things 'bigger', the originality of London's skyline is one of its true strengths, as opposed to the generic upwards sticks of New York. You got to mix the old with the new - not just knock it down and build a 60's tower on it.

Qualifications: visited both cities

Come on guys don't turn this thread into city vs city thread. London and NYC are different from each other, but both are great global metropolises and that's what matters.

Then it gets to the 50's and you get this (I know brutalism isn't a British-founded style either, more the likes of Le Corbusier (sp?) Frank Lloyd Wright etc.

It was more the first time buildings were built to emulate the old but redefine how we interact with the places we inhabit. The thinking was perhaps far too ahead of its time and as a result we had all these now ugly, unsuitable blocks but for me the Barbican is one of very few exceptions, it is just that other microcity within the many that make up London.

If it really was that bad, 'sucking the life out'.. I'd fail to see why it is so damn popular and expensive to live in. Anyway, back to Heron..
Expensive = good? Ever seen any hideous houses with huge price tags?
