Rakesh, you are funny.

No, I am not. I just like England and Scotland, Wales and all of the British Isles, I perhaps watch a lot of Coast lately!

But believe me, when we compare the British Empire to that of the French or Russians or what so ever and their Royal Family and Monarchy is truly the ONLY real one left worldwide.

And yes you are right, I too do believe strongly that in fact it is London that is the financial capital of the world.

Heron Tower fish tank!

Fishy Business At Heron Tower.
Published on 11-08-2010 by Skyscrapernews.com

One of the final landmarks has been achieved in the construction of Heron Tower in the City of London - the delivery of the largest fish tank of any office building in Europe.

The tank will hold 70,000 litres of water, which translates into 70 tonnes of weight, and will contain 1,200 fish taken from the western side of Heron Island.

Swimming in a fish tank in the lobby of an office building in London will be something of a change for the fish as Heron Island is a tropical island situated off the Great Barrier Reef with numerous wrecks around it, some of which have been deliberately sunk to provide breakwater. Coral reef will however be installed inside the tank to make them feel at home.

The tank will sit behind the reception desk with a steel lantern above it, and a plinth below it. Designed as a single acrylic unit rather than something assembled on site it spans 12 metres long, 4 metres high, and has a width of 2 metres, sadly meaning this tank isn't quite large enough to contain Jaws. These dimensions are however so big that due to London's bridge restrictions it had to be transported to the site on its side with a protective steel frame.

Once it arrived on the site the contractors mounted the tank on air skates to move it into the entrance lobby and from here it has been fitted on to the plinth it will stand above although this isn't its final location. Next month the fully completed tank, and plinth, will be moved into their final position.

New York and London seem to share the title, swapping back and forth regularly. There will no doubt be very powerful centers from Asia joining the club soon too.

One of the reasons I personally love London is it seems to stay up there, no matter what happens, plagues, citywide fires, the Blitz, terrorism... It just gets over them and grows stronger. It evolves and refuses to become a museum city, and stays near or at the top while other cities come and go. That's why I love London

The fish tank will be one of the finest characteristics of this building. I remember reading something it having a shark among other species.

It would be stupidly costly (as well as create some ghastly structural problems) but I would love to see a 'scraper that used water as a massive feature throughout. Sort of, translucent pillars filled with water and light, visible internally and externally, that created interesting shadows as the light was refracted passing through the water...

...in the mad hatter's world in which I live.

We have to wait for Dubai to try that.

But I don't know if I would trust the structure of a building like you describe.

Running water all over the internal structure of a skyscraper would be obscenely expensive, unless the Qataris are paying for it.

The Gherkin will be the star of this skyline as long as Bishopgate is not finished, but Heron does fulfill its role as filler.

Depends if you want high quality they could just stick a load of hose pipes in some clear plastic tubes and dot them about.
