Europe's largest aquarium installed in London office

Two London companies have installed what is believed to be the Europe's largest "privately owned" aquarium at their development in Bishopsgate, London.

Heron International, a property group, and Skanska, one of the world's largest construction companies, recently saw the delivery of the 70,000 litre tank in the lobby of Heron Tower. The 12m x 2m x 4m acrylic tank was manufactured in Colorado, USA, by Reynolds and had to be shipped across London on its side to allow it to fit under low bridges.

Steve Evans, Heron International's development director said: "The aquarium is a masterpiece of design and manufacturing, that fits perfectly with the high quality workmanship involved in all aspects of this development." A spokesman for Heron International told Practical Fishkeeping that the tank was shipped inside a protective steel frame and moved to the correct position when in situ.

"The frame was removed and the aquarium was lifted onto air skates to install it in the entrance lobby. It was then lifted onto a temporary plinth where the rockwork, artificial coral and fish life safety systems will be installed.

"The whole unit will be moved into its final location beneath a steel lantern in late summer."

Could someone explain what those little cranes are for on the top, the permanent fixtures. They don't look very appealing. Why do some skyscrapers have them and other not?

They're for window cleaning... They carry the cradle that the window cleaners work in.

Not too sure why some scrapers don't appear to have them... I guess courtesy of 'self cleaning' glass? ...or more likely they do have them, but they stow away out of sight.

I kind of wish Heron's window cleaning equipment was a bit more "discreet"...

I presume they have installed the huge fish tank so that the Herons have a place to feed!
