Garuda to resume CitiLink operation by mid-year

Flag carrier Garuda Indonesia will resume the operation of its low-cost carrier (LCC) unit Citilink in June or July which was stopped in January, director for strategy and information tehcnology Elisa Lumban Toruan said Friday.

"CitiLink as Garuda's business unit will seriously perform as an LCC player without disregarding flight safety," she said.

"We halted the operation temporarily to formulate the most appropriate business strategy for CitiLink."

CitiLink operation was halted on Jan. 15 after suffering losses in the past three years. Earlier, the unit managed to bring profits after being established in 2001.

Elisa said Garuda was determined to develop CitiLink as a leading domestic LCC.

The airline plans to use Boeing 737-300 and expects the arrival of five aircraft this year with an expected fleet of 25 airplanes "in three or five years depending on market dynamics," said Elisa.

Contacted separately, air transportation director at Transportation's air transportation directorate general Tri Sunoko said all CitiLink's route licenses had been revoked since the unit stopped operation.

"Regulation has it that if a route is not served in 21 consecutive days than the license is automatically revoked," he said.

Citilink has to submit new license request if it wants to fly again. The government will not grant the license especially in saturated routes such as those to Denpasar, Medan and Surabaya.

Garuda has yet to spin off CitiLink although the management has several times stated that it would do so. (****)

How hot is the market between Singapore and Ho Chi Minh?

It seems like SQ, Garuda, Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar Asia is quite a number of airlines already... Now Lion Air?

Garuda, Mandala lobbyinEU to lift flight ban

Batam (ANTARA News) - Garuda Indonesia and Mandala Airlines are lobbying the European Union to lift the ban it had clamped on them to fly to Europe, an executive of one of the airlines said.

"Both Garuda Indonesia and Mandala Airlines are lobbying the EU to show their ability to meet the EU`s flight safety requirements," Mandala Chief Executive Officer Warwick Brady said on Wednesday.

He said Mandala had presented the results of an audit on its planes to the EU. "They were happy with the audit results."

In July 2007, the EU Air Safety Agency banned all Indonesian airlines from flying to any destination in Europe. The EU claimed the Indonesian authorities had failed to provide the 27-nation bloc with information on air safety in the country.

But the Indonesian government saw no reason for the ban since the EU had based its decision on third-party information.

Rajawali Group to develop Cambodian airline

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia`s Rajawali Group on Thursday signed a cooperation agreement with the Cambodian government to develop its national airline.

Under the agreement, Rajawali would build infrastructure facilities needed to develop the airline, the company`s spokesman, Christiantoko, said on Thursday.

As a follow-up to the agreement, both sides would set up a new company which would be 49 percent owned by Rajawali and 51 percent by the Cambodian government, he said.

"Its paid-up capital will be around US$50 million," he said.

Both sides were committed to developing the Cambodian airline into world-class one, he said.(*)

May I remind those who post in this thread that this is an international thread. So please use the world's most common lingua franca, English, to post.

EU continues ban of all Indonesian carriers. What did you expect? Indonesian airlines are obviously not taking the ban seriously; scraped tails, bad landings, and continued safety breaches...

well, if i should believe what have been told in the media, Garuda Indonesia is going to receive the IOSA cerfiticate from IATA, (safety audit) and they have also ordered 10 777-300er's. So good and save planes, it's all about politics

No they should not.

We should look at OURSELVES. Do we deserve the ban?
If we can truly honestly answer that question with "No", then we can start talking about banning other countries' airlines.

But we all know what the answer is.

Let's not forget, this ban is for the regulator, not the airlines themselves.
The govt lack oversight, control or even will to enforce the safety. That is the reason of the ban.

Both the government and airlines must share the blame together.

You can't blame the government for not enforcing safety onto the airlines, that just makes the airlines more guilty of disregarding safety. An airline must be socially responsible for the passengers it carries, in addition to flying them to their destinations.

Politics? What politics? Garuda is not the only airline in Indonesia. New planes does not guarantee safe flights; Lion Air's B739ERs frequently got scraped and even though no lives were lost from that, it is still not good in the long run.

I found the following information on the wikipedia site of Lion Air

Quote:
1 October 2007: A Boeing 737-900ER (registered as PK-LFJ) tail strike ground while taking off, causing 2.5 m tear in cargo area of the plane.[3]
