VP says Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta Airport ready this year

Jakarta, (ANTARA News) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has expressed optimism that the construction of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport`s terminal-3 would be completed at the end of this year.

"I have just inspected the construction site of terminal-3 and I find that it will be completed at the end of this year," the vice president said after the inspection at Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Saturday.

Meanwhile, project manager Yudhi Listiono said the completion of terminal-3 has reached 38 percent from the original target of 37 percent.

Yudhi also explained to the vice president that the construction of the terminal was divided into five phases and would be completed in two years.

"But the first phase will be ready at the end of this year," Kalla said.

The vice president explained that when the first phase of terminal-3 was ready, it would be able to accommodate 4 million people, but when all five phases were ready they would accommodate 20 million people.

"So far, terminal-1 and terminal-2 only accommodate around 20 million, but every year they accommodate more than 34 million passengers," Kalla said.

Therefore, he asserted that the construction of terminal-3 should be accelerated to anticipate the increasing economic growth.(*)

Indonesia aircraft component industry to pass global standards in 2009

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government hopes that the aircraft component industry in the country, including its design engineering would have to meet global standards in 2009, an official said.

"We hope so. We have begun certification process by the DOA for PT Dirgantata Indonesia (DI) this year," Director for Certification and Airworthiness of the Ministry of Transportation Yurlis Hasibuan said here on Monday.

He was answering reporters` questions on the sidelines of a seminar on the Design Organization Approval (DOA).

The DOA is a design organization whose aircraft design and modification are approved by the directorate general of air transportation.

The government`s step to accommodate the DOA is contained in the Transportation Minister`s decree No. 13 / 2008 on Certification Procedures for Products and Parts dated April 4, 2008.

Director General for Air Transportation Budhi M Suyitno said his side wanted to develop the national industry to produce aircraft components in the country.

"The use of locally manufactured aircraft components could save 30 percent of the cost," the director general said.

He said that Indonesia was now able to produce some aircraft components such as interior components but still imported aircraft engines.

"With the DOA, locally produced aircraft components will be validated based on the standards in force. The validation requirement will also be imposed on components purchased overseas," he said. (*)

Kal Star to serve Kotabaru-Banjarmasin route
Antara , Jakarta | Tue, 07/22/2008 7:54 PM | National

Regional airline Kal Star will soon serve a route linking South Kalimantan provincial capital Banjarmasin with Kotabaru, head of Kotabaru's Gusti Syamsiar Alam regional airport, Tugino, said Tuesday.

"I have asked the airline to submit official letter stating its ability to serve the Banjarmasin route for an afternoon flight," he said.

Kal Star, operating a twin turboprop ATR-42 with a capacity of 42 passengers, will start serving the new route in August.

Previously the route was served by Riau Airlines using a 48- seat twin turboprop Fokker F-50. The airlines, however, halted the service indeterminately with a daily flight.

Tugino expected Riau Airlines to resume operations soon to give Kotabaru residents more choices as well as better services and cheaper fares.

"I have also asked Kal Star to open a route linking Kotabaru with Surabaya to allow residents to travel to Java," he said. (****)

Garuda, Korean Air sign MoU on marketing cooperation

Nusa Dua, Bali (ANTARA News) - Indonesian flag carrier Garuda Indonesia and Korean Air have agreed to cooperate more closely in the marketing of their services.

The agreement was formalized in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Garuda Indonesia President Director Emirsyah Satar and Korean Air President Director/CEO Lee Jong Hee here Thursday.

Under the MoU, the two airlines would increase the seat allocation under their codesharing scheme on the Jakarta-Seoul or Denpasar-Seoul routes from the present 20 to 30 seats.

The two airlines would also implement an interline e-ticket to improve customer`s service, and impose codesharing on domestic routes served by both Garuda Indonesia and Korean Air.

Korean Air would also help Garuda join Skyteam, a global alliance of national airlines.

Skyteam members among others are Aeroflot, Aero Mexico, Air France, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Korean Air, Air Europe, Copa Airlines, and Kenya Airways.

Skyteam members are flying to some 841 cities in 162 countries with more than 16,409 flights per day.

Emirsyah Satar said, Garuda`s target was to become a four-star airline in 2009 and a five-star airline in 2010.

In a bid to reach the target, Garuda had improved its management as well as services.

"Garuda now flies the Denpasar-Seoul route five times per week, and Korean Air four times per week using A-330 Airbuses," Emirsyah said.

EU flight ban could be 'politically motivated': Indonesia official

JAKARTA (AFP) - The European Union's decision to extend a flight ban on all Indonesian airlines for safety reasons could be politically motivated, a foreign ministry spokesman said Friday.

The European Commission and the EU's Air Safety Committee on Thursday unanimously rejected a request by Indonesian airlines to be taken off the region's blacklist of unsafe airlines.

"The way we see it, the EU always puts their actions (in terms of) technicality issues. But we question if there are political motivations behind the decision," ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah told AFP.

The EU found three key airlines that had applied for a "fast track" lift of the ban, including flag-carrier Garuda Indonesia, could not be confirmed as safe enough for European skies, despite concerted efforts to improve safety.

In maintaining the ban on all 51 Indonesian airlines, the EU said Indonesia had not introduced an efficient safety oversight regime and that safety gains had not yet been assessed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

Indonesia had been hoping to have the bans lifted on at least four airlines by the end of July.

"We are disappointed with the prolonging of the ban," Faizasyah said. "We've done some improvements so we do hope that those actions taken could be considered."

The ban was imposed on Indonesian airlines last year after a string of deadly crashes in the archipelago, which is heavily reliant on air links.

An Adam Air plane crashed into the sea off Indonesia's Sulawesi island in January 2007 due to pilot error, killing everyone on board.

Two months later, a Garuda jet burst into flames on landing in Central Java, killing 21 people.

The pilot of that plane was charged with negligence and "deliberately" causing damage to the aircraft in court on Thursday, and could face up to life in prison.

Prosecutors seek life sentence for pilot
Slamet Susanto , The Jakarta Post, Yogyakarta
25 July 2008

The pilot of the Garuda airplane that crashed in Yogyakarta last year should be sentenced to life in prison for negligence and deliberate actions leading to the loss of lives, prosecutors told a court Thursday.

The Garuda airplane, piloted by Capt. Pilot M. Marwoto Komar, crashed and burst in flames upon landing at Adi Sucipto Airport in Yogyakarta on March 7 last year.

During the trial, which commenced in the Sleman District Court on Thursday, the prosecution team, consisting of five members from the Yogyakarta and Sleman prosecutor's offices, read out multiple charges against Marwoto.

The first charge against Marwoto, for violating the Criminal Code by a deliberate act that led to the loss of life, carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. The second charge, of negligence, carries a sentence of seven years' imprisonment.

The third charge stated his negligence had caused the deaths of, and injuries to, other people.

Prosecutors said a technical test conducted by expert witness Widada, a Garuda technician, found that the Garuda GA 200 series 3 GZC airliner was airworthy and that the weather in Yogyakarta was calm at the time of incident.

The witness said the plane was flying at 5,000 feet, when it was not safe to land the plane when it was 12 miles from the runway. According to standard procedures, it should have been at 4,000 feet when approaching the runway.

The plane's speed also exceeded the limit, he said. It was cruising at 240 knots, when it should have been going no faster than 205 knots.

The plane was nosediving at a great speed when it approached the runway. The plane's alarm system had reportedly warned the pilot to circle once more to reach a safe speed.

Co-pilot Gagan Saman Rukman had also reminded the defendant to lift the plane and make a circle for the sake of safety, Widada said.

The court heard the defendant failed to heed the warnings and touched down at a speed of 221 knots, compared with the limit of 140 knots.

Because of the speed, Widada said, the plane landed hard on the runway and bumped three times. With the front wheels broken, it skidded into a rice field and burst into flames.

Of the 133 passengers, 21 were burned to death, among them Australian citizens, and 32 others were seriously injured.

Specifications show the 53.9-ton plane required only a 4,910-meter stretch of runway to land. The runway at Adi Sucipto is 7,200 meters long.

Lawyer for the defense, Muhammad Assegaf, raised objections to all the charges.

"It is inconceivable that the defendant intentionally caused the accident," he said.

"We object to the charges, which are unconvincing."

According to Assegaf, aviation matters and punishments should come under the 1992 Aviation Law.

"This is the first case involving a pilot that has been treated as a criminal matter," he said.

The repercussions from treating the incident as a criminal case could incite fear and apprehension among aviators, he added.

The court has been adjourned until Aug. 4.

I love LionAir's livery. I hope they never change it. It looks so good on their new 737's and older MD80's and MD90's. I hope they keep the MD's around for as long as possible.

Garuda aims to double profit to Rp 516 billion
Antara , Jakarta | Thu, 07/31/2008 7:56 PM | Business

Garuda Indonesia intends to double its net profit this year to Rp 516 billion from a year earlier, says its president director.

"We aim to increase it by up to two-fold," Emirsyah Satar said following a discussion on state-owned companies' performance here on Thursday.

The profit will be the result of the company's success in raising its transport capacity, improving efficiency and expanding its market, he said.

Garuda will increase its fleet, including operating planes, under a lease contract as part of efforts to improve its transport capacity, he said.

The national flag carrier is in the process of ordering 50 Boeing 737-800s, 10 Boeing 777-30ERs and three Airbus planes under a lease contract. The 50 Boeing 737-800s will be delivered in 2009 and 10 Boeing 777-30ER in 2010.

Last year, Garuda posted a profit of Rp 258 billion after it suffered losses for three consecutive years.

Garuda suffered a loss of Rp 811.3 billion in 2004, Rp 688.4 billion in 2005 and Rp 197 billion in 2006.

He said efficiency was a must in view of a persistent steep rise in fuel costs.

"Efficiency also includes selling non-productive assets," he said.(**)

Indosat, Mandala Cooperate in Reservation System

Jakarta, (ANTARA News) - Publicly listed satellite telecommunications company PT. Indosat and Mandala Airlines signed a momerandum of understanding on marketing and services to each of their customers.

The MoU was signed by Indosat President Director Johnny Swandi Sjam and Chief Executive Officer of Mandala Warwick Brady here on Tuesday.

The cooperation agreement covers micro-payment services, SMS-based campaigns, marketing and sales, and corporate solution of Mandala airlines telecommunications problems.

Other sectors of cooperation include event organization, sponsorship and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

On the occasion, Indosat marketing director Guntur S Siboro said the micro-payment service under the cooperation Mandala`s fares are paid through an Indosat mobile wallet, namely `my wallet` combined with WAP reservation.

My wallet is a payment/purchase service provided by the subcribers who have established cooperation with Indosat through the use of handphone software using Indosat cards such as Matrix, Mentari and IM3.

"This is a cross-sale between Indosat and Mandala due to similarity in subcribers," Guntur said. (*)

Lion Air secures license to fly to Saudi Arabia

Jakarta (ANTARA News/Asia Pulse) - Indonesia's largest private airline Lion Air said it has secured a license to serve regular flights to Saudi Arabia.

Lion Air President Rusdi Kirana said the carrier would serve routes between Jakarta and Riyadh and Jakarta - Jeddah, to start not later than mid-2009.

Kirana said Lion would use Boeing 777 series and B-747 or Airbus 380 aircraft to serve the routes. Meanwhile, Lion planned to return 16 units of its old MD-82 aircraft to its lessor, to be replaced with new Boeing 737-900ER aircraft, which were more energy efficient, he said.
