AirAsia Indonesia launches inaugural flight to Singapore

Singapore (ANTARA News/dpa) - The inaugural flight of AirAsia Indonesia landed at Singapore's Changi Airport Thursday, making it the third airline to start operations in Singapore this year.

Aboard the flight from Pekanbaru, the capital city of Riau province, was the carrier's chief executive officer, Dharmadi, who like many Indonesians uses only one name.

"Last year, some 1.96 million visitor arrivals came from Indonesia, which accounted for nearly 20 per cent of the total visitors to Singapore," said Lim Kim Choon, director general of Singapore's Civil Aviation Authority.

Total passenger movements by air between Indonesia and Singapore reached 3.86 million in 2007, registering 6.5 per cent growth over 2006.

"The launch of Air Asia Indonesia's new service between the two countries is well-poised to capitalize on such strong growth," Lim said at the plane's welcoming ceremonies.

The carrier plans to operate 12 weekly flights to Singapore: six from Pekanbaru and subsequently six from Padang by the end of 2008.

With the launch of Air Asia Indonesia's flights, 12 airlines now operate more than 630 weekly passenger flights between Singapore and 12 cities in Indonesia.

Air Asia and TNT commenced operations earlier this year.

Changi Airport is served by 80 airlines.

Garuda to recruit 200 pilots

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - PT Garuda Indonesia will recruit at least 200 pilots following the arrival here of two Boeing 737-800 airliners this month, an official of the national flag carrier said.

"We need 200 pilots, hundreds of technicians and stewardesses to fill the vacancies provided by the new planes," Garuda Chief Communications officer Pujobroto said here on Thursday.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of the launching of the `GIH` (Garuda Indonesia Holidays) website which was attended by Miss Universe 2008 Gayana Mendoza of Venezuela.

Pujobroto said the pilots would not automatically be employed to fly the new Boeign 737-800s, because their skills would be studied first.

"They have to pass tests and training first," he said.

He said that the new recruits, including from PT Merpati Nusantara Airlines (MNA), will be prioritized to fly Garuda`s Boeing 737-300s, 737-400s and 737-500s.

"Some of them are prepared to fly 10 Boeing 737-800s," he added.(*)

Garuda to add seats for Idul Fitri
The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Fri, 08/22/2008 4:46 PM | Business

National flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia is set to prepare 44,000 extra seats to anticipate the soaring number of passengers during the 2008 Idul Fitri celebrations.

Garuda's head of communications, Pujobroto, told a press gathering Friday that Garuda would be adding 44,533 seats on 11 flight routes between Sept. 25 and Oct. 6.

The initiative is part of Garuda's measures to accommodate the high number of travelers during the Idul Fitri festivities.

Pujo added that Garuda's anticipative measures included increasing the frequency of flights and using larger aircrafts.

According to Pujo, the 11 routes comprise eight domestic routes and three international routes.

The domestic route consists of, among others, 18,740 seats on the Jakarta-Denpasar route and 3,388 seats on the Jakarta- Surabaya route.

Pujo added that Garuda, which had pledged to adopt a flexible operations policy, would be operating a 636-seat plane in anticipation for passengers traveling the Jakarta-Denpasar route.

"An example of this is last year's Idul Fitri holiday. Garuda, which initially had planned on raising the number of seats, practically added another 13,604 seats on the route," Pujo said. (amr)

When economy worsened in the end of 90's, Garuda was one of the most hit by the monetary crisis, and forced to sell the aircrafts to.....pay the debt, which continued by route-cuts, job-cuts, and blown by the high competition with domestic airlines which offered low fare.

So, during the period of 2002-2006, Garuda booked slightly over $120 million in net loss, and it got worse when oil price was skyrocketing during that period of time. Well, it was peanut compared to Malaysia Airline which booked $414 million in net loss in 2005 alone, or Thai airways which posted $ 143 million in net loss in Q3 of 2005 alone.

Now, Garuda Indonesia is fully alive and KICKING ! There are some good news about garuda which make it easier to pave the way to be among world's powerful airlines ( now we are among 30 biggest airline in the world).

Here we are :
1. In 2007, Garuda booked a net profit at $ 26 million, not bad at all, especially when most of airlines in the world still wrote their endless loss stories. This led Garuda management to plan to expand the operation, adding new routes to Australia, China, Central Asia, and Middle East, , resuming flight to US and Europe, and strengtening position in Southeast Asia. I personally hope that they will fly to Moskva too.

2. Garuda Indonesia has earned IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) safety certification from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This has made Garuda. With this acknowledgement, Garuda becomes the only operator in Indonesia who have fulfilled the standards of safety established by IOSA and IATA.

Garuda indonesia is still way above many airlines in terms of safety issue, i googled and found this :
1. Aeroflot 21 cases
2. Air Canada 4 cases
3. Air France 6 cases
4. American Airline 12 cases
5. Bristish Airways 4 cases
6. China Airline 8 cases
7. Delta Airline 4 cases
8. Japan Airline 4 cases
9. KLM 4 cases
10. Korean Airline 14 cases
11. Pan Am 14 cases
12. Qantas 9 cases
13. SAS 3
14. Swisair 4 cases
15. TWA 17 cases
16. United Airline 13 cases
17. US Airways 6 cases

Garuda ? only 1 case. yipeeee !

3. Garuda Indonesia has followed up its recent move into profitability by announcing plans to purchase 10 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft worth an estimated US$2 billion to support route expansion plans to Europe, US, the Middle East and the rest of Asia. It is important to underline that the purchase plans for the new Boeing 777-300ER will have no impact on existing plans to acquire 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliner for their fleet in 2012, as i already wrote about this in my previous article.

The wide body Boeing 777-300

Also, this year Garuda will begin receiving 50 units of Boeing 737-800 aircraft which will strengthen Garuda position in regional and domestic market.

Newly purchased, Boeing 737-800 ER

4. Expansion of airports in Indonesia.
Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Makassar, Bandung, will have new terminals and new airports. Bali plans to add new runway and international terminal to the existing old terminal and single runway. Medan will soon move its troubled airport to a new world-class airport in Kuala Namu. Makassar has silently move to new airport. Jakarta has announced that its Terminal 3 will be operated by the end of 2008. It's said that Jakarta Int'l airport will be able to accomodate 58 million passenger by 2015. Of coz, this will make a good way for Garuda to achieve its goals.

Fly higher, my Garuda !
nice Garuda!

Two foreign airlines to serve Bali
Ni Komang Erviani , Contributor , Badung | Thu, 09/04/2008 10:18 AM | Bali

Two more foreign airlines have been scheduled to provide direct flights to Bali in the near future said Heru Legowo, general manager for airport operations at Ngurah Rai international Airport on Wednesday.

"The two airlines are Hong Kong Express based in Hong Kong and Virgin Blue in Australia," Heru said, speaking for the state-owned firm PT Angkasa Pura I, which manages the airport.

He said the two airlines would start offering direct flights to Bali later this month: Hong Kong Express to begin on Sept. 11 with four flights from Hong Kong a week and Virgin Blue would fly in 11 times a week from Cairns.

"The start date for Virgin Blue flights has not been set yet, but they have been scheduled to start within the month," he said.

The two airlines will raise the number of foreign airlines serving Bali directly to 26.

Heru expected more foreign airlines will help increase the number of foreign tourists visiting the resort island, especially from Hong Kong and Australia.

As Hong Kong Express also flies to South Korea and Taiwan, "we hope the new services will significantly raise the number of visitors to Bali", he said.

Aloysius Purwa, chair of the Bali chapter of the Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies (ASITA), hailed the planned services by the two foreign airlines.

The rising number of foreign tourists visiting Bali reflects rising international interest in the island, Purwa said.

"This will ensure Bali remains one of the favorite tourism destinations in the world," he said.

"Bali needs still more foreign airlines to enable foreign tourists to go there."

Purwa added the number of foreign airlines serving direct flights to Bali is still too small to attract significantly more visitors.

Based on figures from the Denpasar office of the Central Statistics Agency, the number of foreign tourists visiting Bali from January to July 2008 reached about 1.11 million, an increase of 21.64 percent compared to 912,270 tourists during the corresponding period last year.

Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin (not Baharuddin) II is actually the first modern airport in Indonesia. Sultan Hasanuddin in Makassar could be much more futuristic but opened much more later than Sultan Mahmud. So, Makassar should be in 2nd position in term of the latest modern opened.

Well, hopefully GA will always be in fit financial condition, so that the realization of the 2 types of Boeing can be real. Can't wait to see the 2 types especially the B 773 ER standing side by side with SQ wide bodies or any other airlines that operate the same type.

Lion Air secures license to fly to Saudi Arabia

Jakarta (ANTARA News/Asia Pulse) - Indonesia's largest private airline Lion Air said it has secured a license to serve regular flights to Saudi Arabia.

Lion Air President Rusdi Kirana said the carrier would serve routes between Jakarta and Riyadh and Jakarta - Jeddah, to start not later than mid-2009.

Kirana said Lion would use Boeing 777 series and B-747 or Airbus 380 aircraft to serve the routes. Meanwhile, Lion planned to return 16 units of its old MD-82 aircraft to its lessor, to be replaced with new Boeing 737-900ER aircraft, which were more energy efficient, he said.

--------------------------------------
really?? boeing 777?? airbus 380??
I'd go with 777 for Lion rather than 747 or even the 380. They should learn from GA history that always used big aircraft to Europe but most of the time were empty in term of seats. Therefore, they closed the route one by one. We should realize that we are not SQ, MH, CX, or TG that can guarrantee their planes will be fully booked on the route. But in this case, considering that many TKW and the Haj to the Middle East, I think it'd be OK for Lion to go with 747. Still I suggest them to use 772ER or 773ER
