Ngurah Rai airport to be expanded
Ni Komang Erviani , Contributor , Badung | Tue, 09/09/2008 10:22 AM | Bali

State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I will expand both the domestic and international terminals of Denpasar's Ngurah Rai International Airport to turn it into one of the best tourism airports in the world, an official said Monday.

"Expansion work will be carried out on both the domestic and international terminals, but not on the airport's runway," said Heru Legowo, head of PT Angkasa Pura I's Bali office.

Under the expansion project, the total area of the domestic and international terminals will be increased from the current 83,000 square meters to about 200,000 square meters, with 130,000 square meters for the international terminal and 70,000 for the domestic terminal.

At present, the international terminal measures 70,000 square meters, while the domestic terminal measures 13,000 square meters.

Heru added the project was expected to also increase the airport's passenger handling capacity from the current 10 million per year to 16 million.

The project is estimated to cost up to Rp 1 trillion (US$110.10 million). The existing domestic terminal will be altered into the international terminal, while the international terminal will become the domestic one, he said.

"The project plan was proposed to the office of the State Minister for State Enterprises... We are awaiting its approval," he said.

"It's not easy to attain the status of one of the best tourism airports in the world. We have to work hard, and this expansion project is one of our approaches to realizing it," Heru added, saying the project would be completed within three years.

"We hope to have an airport with more spacious terminals by 2011," he said.

He added the project would focus on the relocation of several official houses owned by PT Angkasa Pura I, located in the northern part of the airport.

The airport terminal expansion plan was warmly hailed by Ngurah Wijaya, head of the Bali Tourism Board, who said existing facilities were inadequate for tourists.

The mushrooming of retail outlets in the narrow terminal has given visitors a bad first impression, he said, adding that they made the existing terminals "look more like a mall than an airport".

"We need a more spacious and comfortable airport with many more seats," he said.

Wijaya said the project was very important to guarantee convenience, badly needed by the airport as the island's main gateway.

"The first impression most tourists get, whether good or bad, is from the airport," he said.

"If their first impression is bad, the tourists will not feel comfortable for the rest of their stay in Bali."

That's good.

But why are they turning the international terminal to the domestic one and likewise?

My assumption is because the area in domestic terminal is not largely constructed yet, so there is a big or should i say a large area to be build and its expandable.

so the current international tterminal will fit nicely to the domestic operation and the new terminal for international, will look very modern once it get built

Cheers

that's good news for the people of bali. They can expect more visitors since it will become more comfortable which makes the choices easier for foreign airliners to fly to bali. The current facilities are trashy, old/not from these days and much too small.

I read earlier this year or even last year that the government of bali had plans to build a new airport in the jembrana regency. Is still goin' on or was it just a 'plan'.

I do like the part of the international terminal joining the two halves. With the Balinese style gates and pond. I'd like to see more traditional vernacular architecure and layout like Jakarta.

It wont be feasible to build a brand new airport which is far away from denpasar, so i think that idea has been scrapped and now they are proceeding with the terminal expansion instead.

Virgin Blue first Asia destination is Bali!

PACIFIC BLUE TO LAUNCH FLIGHTS FROM AUSTRALIA TO INDONESIA

DIRECT SERVICES FROM ADELAIDE, BRISBANE AND PERTH TO DENPASAR IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS

Friday 19 September 2008:

Pacific Blue Airlines is expanding its international route network to include Asia for the very first time, with the announcement the airline will launch 11 direct flights a week between Australia and Indonesia from 1 December this year and just in time for the peak Christmas holiday period.

Subject to regulatory approval, Pacific Blue will fly direct from three Australian ports to Denpasar, the gateway to exotic Bali.

The carrier will operate direct services from Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth. The Bali flights will mark the first time the Virgin Blue Group will operate direct international flights from both Adelaide and Perth and the airline will also be the only carrier operating direct Bali flights from Adelaide and Brisbane. The airline currently operates 62 international flights a week from key east coast ports to New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Virgin Blue Chief Executive, Brett Godfrey, said, “Venturing into a brand new market is tremendously exciting for our Group of airlines, particularly given the new flights to Indonesia will be our first foray into Asia.”

He continued, “Our Pacific Blue brand has a strong focus on leisure markets and Bali is a natural fit and an obvious choice for Pacific Blue services. It will bring increased competition and a high quality, affordable and importantly, a direct flying option between these three Australian cities and Bali.”

Australians have enjoyed a long term love affair with Bali and Virgin Blue Group is confident the destination will continue to be a favourite playground for travellers eager to experience the exotic and friendly culture, take a summer surfing safari or shopping expedition or indulge in some famous Indonesian cuisine.

For the first time in its history, Pacific Blue will begin flights to a brand new country from three Australian ports at the same time. To celebrate its new Bali flights, the airline has launched a “Gnarly Bali” sale fare. Flights are on sale now until 26 September 2008 for travel from 1 December – 14 December 2008 and 1 February - 31 March 2009.

ADELAIDE-DENPASAR 2 DIRECT FLIGHTS/WEEK SALE FARES FROM $299* One way

BRISBANE-DENPASAR 5 DIRECT FLIGHTS/WEEK SALE FARES FROM $299* One way

PERTH-DENPASAR 4 DIRECT FLIGHTS/WEEK SALE FARES FROM $199* One way

Meanwhile, their rival already planned their big expansion in Bali by adding new route!

Jetstar adds Brisbane-Darwin-Bali service

By Steve Creedy, Aviation writer September 12, 2008 12:00am

Email article Share article

JETSTAR has moved to further bolster its new international hub in Darwin by adding a daily Brisbane-Darwin-Denpasar service from December 3.
The move will provide one-stop Airbus A320 flights from the three big east coast cities and complements existing non-stop A330 services from Sydney and Melbourne, reports The Australian.

It sees frequencies between Brisbane and Darwin rise from six to 13 a week and brings to 69 the number of weekly domestic and international A320 services the low-cost carrier now operates out of the Northern Territory capital.

Jetstar spokesman Simon Westaway said the move would make Jetstar the strongest local carrier serving the Bali market from December.

Mr Westaway said the capacity was in addition to the six weekly A330 flights – two from Melbourne and four from Sydney – and said there was no intention of cancelling those services.

"This is part of our narrowbody strategy of developing Darwin as a legitimate domestic and international hub," he said. "Darwin gets a third Asian destination – we link it directly with Singapore and since September we've been operating to Ho Chi Minh City as well."

The move is part of a broader plan to use A320 and A321 aircraft to service Southeast Asian destinations through Darwin and Perth. The strategy, hatched after delays to the airline's 15 Boeing 787s, also saw Jetstar pull A330 services out of Vietnam and Malaysia and redeploy them to protect slots in Japan.

Mr Westaway said Perth was due to get an international boost late next month, with flights to Denpasar, Jakarta and Singapore.

He said this would be a first for the airline and would see Qantas move off the markets.

Sriwijaya Air plans to make Penang aviation hub

09 September, 2008

Penang: Sriwijaya Air, the third biggest private airline in Indonesia, intends to make Penang as its regional hub to Asean destinations.

To realise the plan, the Jakarta-based airline will start its maiden flight to Malaysia via the Medan-Penang-Medan route on Sept 15.

P.T. Sriwijaya Air Medan district manager Heru Tony Hardjanto said the inaugural flight from Medan will depart at 7.15am (Medan time) and is expected to arrive at the Bayan Lepas International Airport at 8.55am (Malaysian Time). The flight will take off for Medan at 9.35am (Malaysian Time) on the same day and arrive in Medan about 45 minutes later, he told a media conference.

Besides Penang, the airline company also plans to make Kuala Lumpur as its hub to Middle East countries, he said.

Tony said Penang's selection as the Asean hub befitted its location at the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) area.

He said the company also proposed to expand the destinations to several major cities in Asean beginning next year.

Tony said Sriwijaya Air had secured the rights for the second air route - Medan-Kuala Lumpur-Medan-which it will operate from early next year.

"We also plan to fly to new destinations like Medan-Penang-Phuket and Medan-Penang-Haadyai next year interspersed with flights to Medan-Penang-Ho Chin Minh City," he said.

Currently, Sriwijaya has 19 aircraft comprising Boeing 737-200, 737-300 and 737-400. By June next year, the airline will have five Boeing 737-500 planes.

For a start, the 141-seater B737-300 will be used for the Medan-Penang-Medan route and bigger aircraft for the Medan-Kuala Lumpur-Dubai route, he said.

Tony said the company has appointed Allya Travel & Tours (ATT), a wholly-owned subsidiary of IBF International Network Sdn Bhd, as its agent and all ticket transactions should be made through the company.

He said a return ticket for the Medan-Penang-Medan route costs US$100 and US$125 for the Penang-Medan-Penang route.

"The airfare is cheaper from Medan as Penang is a medical tourism destination and many people from Medan and other parts of Indonesia are receiving treatment from several private hospitals in Penang," he said.

Tony said Sriwijaya Air is expected to earn US$2.1 million between September and December. "Our planes will be modified to enable patients flown to Penang to be wheeled in on a stretcher," he said.

ATT will also offer land transport package, accommodation and a hospital chian to patients requiring the service, he said.

Meanwhile, IBF International chief executive officer Ahmad Fazil Hashim said under the "Fly-cum-Charity" programme, ATT would contribute RM2 to the Malaysian Islamic Economic Foundation (YaPEIM) for every ticket sold to passengers on the Penang-Medan route and RM1 on Medan-Penang route.

ATT will also sell a privilege card "Sahabat YaPEIM" at a promotional price of RM30 during the current Ramadan month and RM50 next month to passengers on the Penang-Medan-Penang route, he said.

The card entitles passengers to discounts for airfares, accommodation, medical, shopping at selected malls and during deaths.

YaPEIM will use the contribution to help the needy, regardless of race and religion, he added. - Bernama

Yudhoyono inaugurates Makassar's international airport
The Jakarta Post | Fri, 09/26/2008 6:04 PM | National

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono inaugurated Makassar`s newly built Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport on Friday and toured the futuristic shaped state facility.

The airport mostly has glass walls and is decorated with traditional South Sulawesi ornaments.

The head of state was accompanied by Transportation Minister Djusman Syafiee Djamal, Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto and State Enterprise Minister Sofyan Djalil, state news agency Antara reported.

The airport, which was built by state airport management company PT Angkasa Pura, cost more than Rp 600 billion (US$63.8 million). Construction began in 2005, and the airport has been
fully operational since Aug. 4, 2008.

The international airport is located around 22 km from Makassar City and is five times larger than its original size. The 52,000-square-meter airport can accommodate up to 8 million passengers per year.

Hasanuddin airport was developed into an international airport on October 30, 1994 based and began serving international flights on March 28, 1995, with an opening route to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The renovated airport now has an apron measuring 78,000-square-meter with 33 parking lots for various types of planes, such as Cassas, Boeing 737s, Airbus 330s and Boeing 747
Jumbo Jets.

Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport is considered the gate to eastern Indonesian cities, with an average passenger growth of 15-30 percent annually.

President Yudhoyono and his entourage landed at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport on Friday morning from Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi. He is scheduled to return to Jakarta on Friday
afternoon.(and)

Soekarno-Hatta Airport adds 57 flights for Idul Fitri
The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Tue, 09/23/2008 4:35 PM | Jakarta

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport management is preparing 57 extra flights for Idul Fitri homeward travelers this year, Tempointeraktif.com reported.

Twenty-six out of the 57 extra flights are domestic flights and the rest are international, the airport management head Haryanto said Tuesday. The extra flights will provide 4,056 additional seats for domestic flights and 7,750 seats for international ones, he added.

The additional seats will be provided by 12 airlines, including Garuda, Lion Air, Air Asia, Batavia and Sriwijaya, for domestic flights and six airlines, including Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines, for international flights.

The management predicts that during the week before and after the Idul Fitri holidays, the airport will handle up to 109,800 passengers each day flying in 200 domestic routes and 97 foreign routes. (dre)
