GARUDA's Talk..

After many years (well, it's only FIVE, not so many) of restructuring, Garuda is finally entering the ideal shape on an airline to start the expansion plan. Now Garuda Indonesia is planning to add new network expansion, inflight service (including creating an indonesian-styled executive class..with batik, perhaps). Please put in mind, when Garuda was down because of mismanagement, other airlines just went on upgrading and expanding. At least, Garuda is way better than BA or Alitalia, or Aeroflot, or Varig, or....aah....we are better than soooo many things, no worry.

Just to remind you, last year, when airlines in the region (southeat asia) were plunging into an ocean of financial loss, Garuda succesfully book a net profit of US$ 28 million, and expects to double this year. Garuda will also receive eleven (11 from its 50 orders) its brand new Boeing 737-800NG ( do not get mixed with Lion Air's Boeing 737-900 ER, they're two different aircrafts) next year, adding 12 new domestic routes, and of course international ones (flying from cities like Surabaya, Medan, or Makassar, or Lombok...hey, lombok airport will be a boutique airport..yippeee).

Garuda will resume flights to Europe in 2010 (you better keep your promise) when the TEN...(yes ten)Boeing 777 Long Range received. Garuda also prepares for premium services on ground and onboard, by installing new kinda video for each seat for economy, business, and premium class. Airbus A330 will also be retrofitted with new seats and individual videos. Ground services are also under review with exclusive services in preparation for premium passengers.

Announcement of Garuda’s integrating in the near future into the Skyteam alliance by both Air France and Korean Air executive, are put back in perspective. It is true that Skyteam lacks a partner in Southeast Asia, Garuda will be the pioneer.

European Union Offer Assistance to Improve Indonesian Aviation

Wednesday, 19 November, 2008 | 17:01 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The European Union (EU) is offering to cooperate in order to improve Indonesian aviation.

Director General of Air Transportation Budhi Muliawan Suyitno said that the EU was now more open.

“Before, the EU only imposed a flight ban but now its is offering assistance,” he said yesterday (18/11).

He mentioned that five EU countries are serious about offering technical assistance.

Germany, France, and the Netherlands will offer assistance for security and safety affairs while Sweden and the UK are offering training for human resources.

This Friday, Directorate of Air Transportation will have a teleconference with the EU flight safety unit to talk about the progress over Indonesian aviation.

“It is better to talk through a teleconference so there’ll be no miscommunication,” said Budhi.

Budhi went on to say that the replacement of the EU ambassador to Indonesia, from Pierre Phillipe to Julian Wilson, will have a positive impact.

Wilson is a cooperative person with good intentions of improving the relations between both parties.

Since end of November 2007, the EU has banned Indonesian airlines from flying to Europe.

The EU said it considered Indonesian airlines did not meet the proper safety standards.

At an evaluation meeting on July 10 in Belgium, Indonesia offered three options.

One of these was to encourage Indonesian flight regulators by working together with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to improve safety standards.

Budhi explained the cooperation will be realized soon.

Five aviation inspectors will be appointed on November 27 when ICAO President Robert Kobeh Gonzales comes to Indonesia.

In addition, the Civil Aviation Transformation Team (CATT) will also be formed through cooperation between ICAO, the Federation Aviation Administration (FAA-America), and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA-Australia).

A representative office for the CATT team will be located at Transportation Department and be responsible to the Director General of Air Transportation.

Lion Air seals $380m deal with ATR for new aircraft

Thu, 11/20/2008 10:35 AM | Business

Airline company Lion Air signed Wednesday a memorandum of understanding with aircraft manufacturer ATR for an order of 10 ATR 72-500 aircraft and an option on another 10.

Signed during the opening of the four-day Indo Defense and Aerospace Expo and Forum at the Halim Perdanakusumah Air Force Base in Jakarta, the deal is worth more than US$380 million including the extra options.

The twin-turboprop, 72-seat aircraft will be operated by Lion Air's subsidiary Wings Air as a feeder service to Lion Air's Boeing 737-900ER twin jets.

"With our brand new fleet of ATR 72-500s, we will able to develop a strong low-cost network, feeding Lion Air's major hubs," Lion Air CEO Rusdi Kirana said in a press statement.

ATR CEO Stephane Mayer said the deal would "increase our presence in the expanding Indonesian market and continue the growth of our large fleet in Southeast Asia which has become a booming market in the last three years".

With the arrival of ATR 72-500s, Wings Air will discontinue the operation of its McDonnell Douglas MD-82 and DHC-8-300 fleets.

Wings Air's ATR 72-500s are powered by higher power rated PW 127 engines driving six-blade propellers and will be equipped with the Elegance cabin incorporating the latest developments in passenger amenities and comfort.

The Franco-Italian aircraft manufacturer claims that all ATR models are compliant with noise regulations and have a large margin with regard to Chapter IV (ICAO) noise limits. -- JP/Novan Iman Santosa

Asia Pacific Airlines discuss aviation safety in Bali

Jimbaran, Bali Province (ANTARA News) - The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) is holding an Asia Pacific Aviation Safety Seminar 2008 (APASS 2008) at Jimbaran, Bali, from Nov. 20 to 21 to discuss latest developments in aviation safety.

Some 150 participants from 17 airlines in Asian and Pacific countries are taking part in the seminar hosted by Garuda Indonesia, according to Garuda President Director Emirsyah Satar here on Thursday.

The seminar`s participants also include aircraft manufacturers, suppliers, aviation safety experts and academics.

The two-day seminar titled "Asia Pacific Aviation Safety" is part of ongoing efforts of AAPA members to continuously improve aviation safety in Asia Pacific.

The seminar was important because it would discuss the most crucial aspect of aviation, namely safety, said Satar.

Garuda, as the national flag carrier of Indonesia, was obliged to help the government develop and improve the safety aspect of aviation in Indonesia, he said.

The Garuda Indonesia chief hoped that domestic airlines would compete in improving aviation safety.

During the seminar, which was officially opened by AAPA Director General Andrew Herdman, the participants were expected to exchange ideas and discuss the important fundamentals and application of aviation safety best practices, in-service experience and lessons-learned with leading aviation safety experts from within and outside the region.

France, Netherlands to inspect Indonesia airliners

JAKARTA, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Inspectors from France and Netherlands will soon come to Indonesia to check safety standard of Indonesian airliners, Indonesian transport minister Jjusman Syafii Djamal said here Thursday.

Indonesian leading airline Garuda seeks opening routes to the two countries in cooperation with its counterparts in the two countries.

"In the near future, they will conduct inspections in Indonesia, in term of safety," Djamal told a press conference at the Indonesia Defense Expo at the Halim Perdana Kusuma airforce base here.

The minister said that the country's airliners, which have been banned by the European Union, had achieved some progress on their safety.

"Actually, the Indonesian airliners now have complied with the international safety standard," he said.

The European Union banned 51 Indonesian airliners in July 2007,after a rampant air accident that claimed more than 300 lives.

Garuda to reopen Denpasar-Brisbane route next month

The Jakarta Post | Wed, 11/19/2008 10:27 PM | Business
State airline company Garuda Indonesia will reopen the Denpasar- Brisbane route next month, president director Emirsyah Satar said Wednesday.

Emir said demand for direct flights between the two cities had recovered after plummeting following the 2005 second bombing in Bali, which led to the termination of the route.

"The three weekly flights can potentially bring tourists to Indonesia, particularly to Bali," he said in Denpasar, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Garuda currently flies to four cities in Australia with twice weekly flights to Perth, six per week to Sydney and five per week to Melbourne.

"The total monthly seat capacity to and from Australia currently stands at 28,004 seats. With the Brisbane route, we will add another 3,516 seats," Emir said.

Indonesia cancels all flights to Bangkok

JAKARTA, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- All flights from Indonesia to Bangkok has been canceled on Wednesday due to the seizure of airport in Bangkok by anti-government protesters, airliners said.

Hundreds of furious protesters from the People's Alliance for Democracy seeking to topple Thailand's Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat have seized Suvarnabhumi International Airport since Tuesday afternoon and forced the airport to close in the evening, leading to cancellation of all flights.

All three airliners, including Garuda Indonesia, Thai Airways and Air Asia, have canceled their schedules to Bangkok from Jakarta on Wednesday, officials of the airliners said.

"Flight from Jakarta to Bangkok is aborted today," said Sendi Halim, an official of Garuda Indonesia airline at the Indonesia's international airport of Soekarno-Hatta, told Xinhua by phone.

The other two airliners had earlier Wednesday canceled their scheduled flights to Bangkok, Citra Lestary, another official at the airport, told Xinhua.

Spokesman of the country's Foreign Ministry Teuku Faizasyah said that he believed that the Indonesian people could understand about the situation in Bangkok.

"We do not issue travel advise, and I think that the people know about the uncomfortable situation in Bangkok," he told Xinhua.

Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat hold temporary offices at Don Muang after thousands of alliance supporters surrounded parliament building last month.

Somchai is the brother-in-law of exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was toppled from power by a peaceful military coup in 2006. The opposition considers Somchai as a puppet of Thaksin.

Indonesia's Kartika tentatively agrees to order up to 30 Superjets

Sukhoi Superjet 100

By David Kaminski-Morrow

Indonesian carrier Kartika Airlines has tentatively agreed to become the Asian launch customer for the Sukhoi Superjet 100, with a potential order for up to 30 of the type.

Sukhoi's civil aircraft division says the Jakarta-based carrier has signed a heads of agreement for 15 firm Superjets plus 15 options.

Deliveries of the PowerJet SaM146-powered regional aircraft will begin in 2011.

Kartika currently operates a small fleet of Boeing 737-200 aircraft on domestic and regional routes. Sukhoi says the agreement with the carrier is worth $448 million at list prices.

"With Kartika Airlines being our launch customer in southeast Asia we are opening a new market for the Superjet 100," says Sukhoi Civil Aircraft president Viktor Subbotin.

Kartika's agreement is for the Superjet 100-95B, says the airframer, which will typically accommodate 98 passengers in single-class configuration, or 86 in dual-class.

Candidates for Kartika's fleet-replacement have included the Bombardier CRJ900, Boeing 737 and Airbus A319.

ICAO calls on EU to lift Indonesian air ban

By Balidiscovery.com/etn | Dec 09, 2008

Tempo Interactive quotes the president of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Robert Kobeh Gonzales, as calling on the European Union to lift its blacklisting of Indonesian aviation which bars all Indonesian-registered aircraft from flying within European airspace.

Insisting that Indonesian has improved flight safety standards, pilots skills and air traffic management, Gonzales said, "I hope the union will be stopping it (the blacklisting) soon."

Gonzales also praised the transparency of Indonesian aviation authorities by publishing the results of ICAO audits on government websites. Gonzales explained: "Not ever country does this. Transparency is important."

Gonzales assured the Indonesian authorities that they were taking the necessary steps to improve flight safety and urged the rapid passage of the new aviation safety bill.

Saying he was amazed by the improvements made by Indonesia, he cited the increase in the number of flight inspectors and new air traffic controllers.

In the same article, the CEO of Mandala Airlines, Warwick Brady, blamed the EU blacklisting as having cost his airline around 3,000 passengers. "The ban forbids foreigners from flying with Indonesian airlines," complained Brady.

Brady also revealed that a deal that would have seen Mandala fly thousands of Indonesian employee of Total Exploration & Production was scuttled by the presence of the EU ban.

Brady branded the European Union as "wrong" for banning all Indonesian airlines. Mandala Airlines recently received a letter for the director of the Air Transportation Directorate of the European Union, Daniel Calleja, who indicated he was pleased with the progress made by Brady's airline.

Brady added: "Mandala can meet the standards as it has been audited by various international institutions. Mandala has also completed an external audit, carried out by foreign institutions Airbus, Boeing, Kenyon, and Altara-Australia."

Garuda revives S'pore-Yogya route
Wed, 12/17/2008 11:00 AM | Business

YOGYAKARTA: National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia reopened Tuesday a route linking Singapore and Yogyakarta, a move that will help increase economic activities in the province, and that opens up the Indonesian city to further potential.

The route will be served by a Boeing 737-300 with a seating capacity of 100 and will have three flights a week, on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, according to Garuda.

Garuda estimates the route has the potential to carry 29,000 passengers next year, with an expected load factor of 80 percent.

The Transportation Ministry has forecast growth in numbers of international and domestic passengers at 10 percent next year.

The number of international passengers is expected to grow to 3.70 million from the 3.37 million estimated for this year. The number of domestic passengers is forecast to reach 51 million from the 46.34 million estimated for this year. -- JP
