Indonesia AirAsia to launch Jakarta-Manila flights

By Judith Balea, abs-cbnNEWS.com | 06/29/2009 10:48 AM

SEPANG, Malaysia - Indonesia AirAsia is all set to commence daily flights between Jakarta and Manila in September, competing against the lone budget carrier servicing this route, a top official of the airline said at the sidelines of a partnership unveiling with the Oakland Raiders here on Friday.

"We are just finalizing some things but we are ready to begin our Manila service in September," Indonesia AirAsia president director Dharmadi told abs-cbnNEWS.com, noting that the new service signifies their optimism that demand for low-cost travel will be sustained this year.

Dharmadi said they are hoping to capture a substantial share of the volume of passengers traveling back and forth Jakarta and Manila, a route currently dominated by Philippine budget carrier Cebu Pacific.

The Philippines is just one of the new destinations Indonesia AirAsia is adding in an effort to grow its regional services. The airline is also flying to Denpasar-Perth, Australia starting July, and Saigon, Vietnam beginning September.

It is also boosting services on existing routes. Its Jakarta-Singapore and Denpasar-Singapore flights, for instance, would be doubled to 4 times a day while its Kuala Lumpur flights would be increased from 2 to 3 per day, according to Dharmadi.

While airlines worldwide cut capacity and ground planes to cope with the economic crisis, Dharmadi said Indonesia AirAsia continues to expand to take advantage of travelers' growing preference for budget carriers in order to trim costs.

"I think the crisis has affected long-haul flights. But for short-haul, the growth is stable in terms of capacity and load factor. Passenger volume is still growing," he said.

Dharmadi noted that they also remain unfazed by the spread of the A(H1N1) influenza virus across Asia Pacific where, based on data from the International Air Transport Association, a 14.3 percent drop in passenger air traffic was recorded in May.

"We are still expecting our passenger volume across the region to grow 5 percent this year," he said.

Dharmadi said Indonesia AirAsia is determined to bolster ticket sales through several measures such as scrapping administrative fees and surcharges to further reduce air fares.

"Lowering fares is the only way to get volume and encourage traveling these days," he explained.

That's right.
With their current route (IST-SIN), the plane (A332?) sits too long on the ground. Jakarta would be a good tag-on.

Wow. I'm impressed by the B737 interior.

Although I'm Singaporean, I'd certainly like to see Garuda, along with Thai Airways, Vietnam Airlines and Malaysia Airlines become world class and large airlines like our counterparts in Europe and I don't think I'm blind-sighted to hope.

To tevnalan, having fantasy liveries is definitely fine if those creations are your own. Those fantasy liveries of yours is so United and so Brussels Airlines. Get creative man!

Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen

The newsarticle is in Dutch, i've tried my best to translate it in English!
‘In Indonesië is Garuda toegestaan. Iedereen moet zelf bepalen of hij vliegen met die maatschappij te gevaarlijk vindt. Ik vind dat niet.’

Several months ago, Dutch parlementmembers of the department of Foreign Affairs had cancelled their flights to and within Indonesia, because they didn't want to fly with Garuda. They think it's a huge risk to fly with Garuda. For Verhagen it doesn't matter at all! He said:' In Indonesia Garuda is accepted. Every one most decide for himself if he thinks this airline is dangerous or not. I think it's not!'

Verhagen is optimistic about getting Garuda from the blacklist. The Netherlands offered Indonesia tecninical assistance to improve the safety. Indonesia allready changes their law to European standards and that's why I'm thinking that garuda is flying to Europe again in a matter of time.

Especially for the Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. He feels insulted and Indonesia as well, that the Indonesian airlines are on the EU blacklist. He still refussed to come to the Netherlands for an state visit. He will only come, if he can fly with his own Garuda airplane.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

So when Verhagen came back in the Netherlands, parlementmembers and even the primeminister were furious, that Verhagen and his staff flew Garuda within Indonesia. Verhagen didn't even care what they saying. Verhagen is still lobbying in other European countries to get Garuda from the blacklist!

I think Europe is lucrative market for Garuda, especially in the Netherlands. At the moment The Netherlands have a huge Dutch-Indonesian population of 1.2 million. Now they flying expensive carriers like KLM, Lufthansa, etc. So Garuda is more then welcome!

Airplane wheel breaks during take-off, no one injured
The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Mon, 07/06/2009 11:35 PM | National

A Boeing 737-200 belonging to state airline company Merpati Nusantara landed without its rear left wheel at Frans Kaisiepo airport in Biak, Papua, at about 5 p.m. local time on Monday, but no people on board were injured.

Kompas.com reported the wheel of the plane broke during take-off, but pilot Capt. Haryogi decided to continue flying the aircraft, for safety reasons. The plane hovered around the town for 15 minutes to empty its fuel tank before landing.

Merpati's Corporate Secretary Sukandi told radio station El Shinta the plane was carrying 107 passengers from Biak en route Jakarta, via Makassar.

All passengers and the six crew members will be accommodated at a nearby hotel overnight pending the arrival of a replacement airplane. (ewd)

Garuda to re-enter European market
Published: 2009/07/13

JAKARTA: Garuda Indonesia needs between nine and 12 months to prepare for the European market, following the lifting of the European Union's ban on Indonesian flights into the region.

"Our fleet is now being prepared and new aircraft will be added every year," the airlines' senior general manager for the Eastern region Suranto, was quoted as saying by Antara News Agency in Bali on Saturday.

He said Europe was an extraordinary market to tap and that Garuda meanwhile planned to start flying to Amsterdam in the middle of 2010.

"We have longed for the lifting of the ban. We now have to prepare the time frame to re-enter Europe," he added.

The general manager of the Garuda Indonesia office in Bali, Bagus Y. Siregar, meanwhile said the airline as the national air carrier, will continue to expand its market.

"This year we are still growing. A number of domestic routes have been reopened as well as international ones, such as Hong Kong," he added. - Bernama

Garuda was said to be joining SkyTeam right? I think they need to begin cooperating by codesharing and interlining agreements with airlines like SkyTeam members like AirFrance to make GA's routes to Europe viable and profitable, also to possibly feed to regional destinations like Bali, and even Malaysia and Australia.
