GA doesn't have a problem with CGK-SIN, it can hold its own on the route, flying 6/7/8 daily flights.

The problem is SIN-SGN. In a nutshell, the SIN-SGN market is large but not as large, with SQ, VN, Tiger, Jetstar and Lion all hankering for a piece of that market so it's only natural that the player with the highest cost exits the market. Anyway, GA still codeshares with VN on the SIN-SGN route.

Garuda Opens Jakarta-Manado-Ternate Flight Route

National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia announced it had opened a new flight route linking Jakarta and Manado (North Sulawesi) with Ternate (North Maluku) beginning today.

Garuda Indonesia Corporate Communications officer Pujobroto said that the Garuda flight would depart from Jakarta at 6.10 am Western Indonesia Time (WIB) and arrive in Manado at 10.30 a.m. East Indonesia Time (WIT) and in Ternate at 1 p.m. (WIT).

He said that the flight would depart from Ternate to Manado at 1.40 p.m. (WIT), from Manado to Jakarta 2.10 p.m. WIT and arrive in Jakarta at 4.20 p.m. (WIB).

“We operate 737-300 Boeing aircraft for the route with a seat capacity of 16 in business class and 94 in economy class,” Pujobroto said.

He said that the opening of the Jakarta-Manado-Ternate route was an effort to expand the airlines’ flights to all of the country’s provincial capitals, particularly the provincial capitals in Indonesia’s eastern regions.

“This effort is also intended to help the economy of cities in eastern Indonesia which have the potential to develop such as Ternate,” he added.

Besides Ternate, Garuda has also opened new routes for domestic flights such as the Jakarta - Ambon route, and is planning to open another, the Jakarta - Palu route beginning on July 3, 2010.

Airlines Used Fuel Tax To Lift Revenue: KPPU
Nine airlines have been using fuel surcharges to boost revenue, the Business Competition Supervisory Commission said on Sunday.

This had negated the main purpose of the surcharge — to compensate for rising fuel prices

On May 4, the commission, or KPPU, ordered the airlines to pay a total of Rp 80 billion in fines and Rp 504 billion in compensation to passengers for colluding to inflate prices.

Sunday’s statement puts more heat on the airlines, including flagship carrier PT Garuda Indonesia, PT Sriwijaya Air, PT Mandala Airlines, PT Merpati Nusantara Airlines and PT Lion Mentari Airlines.

The KPPU said in the latest statement that the average level of fuel surcharges was almost the same as from 2006-09.

“The nine airlines imposed fuel surcharge even when fuel prices were decreasing or fluctuating at low prices,” commission spokesman Ahmad Junaidi told the Jakarta Globe on Sunday.

“The fuel surcharge started in 2006 because of the overwhelming rise in fuel prices then. Back then the surcharge was a fixed Rp 20,000 per ticket. But ever since, the price of fuel has been fluctuating and has reached the point where a surcharge was not needed several times, based on our investigations.”

Ahmad added that the airlines have “misused” the fuel surcharges in order to increase their revenue.

“Revenue from fuel surcharges should be received by the suppliers of fuel to compensate for increasing fuel prices, not by the airlines,” Ahmad said. “The airlines shouldn’t be receiving revenue from fuel surcharges.”

He said the airline industry had told the commission that the collusion finding would “ruin” their finances. Ahmad took exception to the argument, but did not identify who had made the remark.

According to a regulation on fuel surcharges created by the Transportation Ministry in 2002, surcharges paid by passengers should go to fuel suppliers.

The KPPU found that passengers of the nine airlines had shelled out $1.5 billion in unwarranted surcharges.

The day after the KPPU ruling earlier this month, Garuda denied any wrongdoing or collusion. The airlines can appeal the decision.

A Garuda spokesman said on May 5 the carrier never cooperated with other airlines when determining its fuel surcharge.

Garuda is set to raise $500 million through a public offering this year. Executives were unavailable for comment on Sunday.

Garuda Indonesia resumes flights to Europe
http://www.eubusiness.com/news-eu/in...a-aviation.4za
01 June 2010, 13:07 CET
— filed under: Netherlands, company, Indonesia, Garuda, aviation

(JAKARTA) - Indonesian flag carrier Garuda Indonesia will resume flights to Europe on Tuesday after a break of almost six years -- including a two-year ban due to safety fears -- a spokesman said.

An Airbus 330-200 with room for 222 passengers will take off from Jakarta at 8:40pm (0140 GMT) bound for Amsterdam, airline spokesman Pujobroto said.

"Garuda will resume flights to Europe tonight. We'll serve the route Jakarta to Amsterdam via Dubai," he said.

One of Asia's most successful airlines through the global economic downturn, Garuda has been expanding its routes and buying planes ahead of a planned initial public offering later this year.

The Amsterdam connection is the first Garuda flight to Europe since late 2004 and comes less than a year after European Union regulators cleared it to fly in EU airspace again.

Brussels banned all Indonesian planes from EU airspace in 2007 after a series of crashes and incidents exposed poor safety standards across the Indonesian aviation industry.

"Reopening the flight to Europe is in line with the plan to expand our network. There are also strong historical ties between Indonesia and the Netherlands," Pujobroto said.

Indonesia was a Dutch colony for hundreds of years until it achieved formal independence in 1945.

Pujobroto said Garuda also planned to open routes to Frankfurt, London, Paris and Rome.

Garuda, which posted a net profit of more than 100 million dollars last year, was named the world's most improved airline last month by London-based research company Skytrax.

Europe here we come again: Garuda
Primastuti Handayani, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Wed, 06/02/2010 8:46 AM | Headlines

After an almost six-year hiatus, national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia returns to Europe, marked by its inaugural flight from Jakarta to Amsterdam.

Garuda CEO and President Emirsyah Satar said during a ceremony to mark the restoration of the route at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Tuesday that the nation is proud that the airline can fly to Europe once again.

“We’re proud to return to Amsterdam. Garuda had earned an award as the most punctual airlines at Schipol [in 2001 and 2002]. We hope we can achieve it again,” he said.

The inaugural flight was made possible after the EU lifted its flight ban on Indonesian airlines last year, which had previously been imposed following a string of plane crashes that claimed hundreds of lives.

Garuda stopped its flights to Europe to cut costs late 2004. The EU banned Indonesian airlines in 2007, citing safety concerns after an audit by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

State-Owned Enterprises Minister Mustafa Abubakar said the reinstated flight was the result of hard work by all the related institutions.

“Garuda is not only the country’s flag carrier. It has performed well and earned profits after years of deficits. Garuda has managed to improve its brand image,” he said.

The carrier is expanding further in Europe, by opening other routes to Frankfurt, London, Paris and Rome, Mustafa added.

Currently, four Airbus A330-200 aircraft will serve the Jakarta-Amsterdam route, via Dubai. Garuda departs daily at 8:40 p.m. from Jakarta and 11 a.m. from Amsterdam, with an ambitious target of achieving at least 80 percent capacity on its Amsterdam flights.

For the upcoming routes to other European cities, the airline has ordered several Boeing 777s that are expected to arrive next year.

Supporting the return to Europe, the airlines worked with designer Josephine “Obin” Komara in creating new uniforms for cabin crew.

The uniforms carry the classic “parang” batik motif, and comprise a long skirt and kebaya-inspired blouse in turquoise, blue and orange for female flight attendants. Stewards wear business suits.

State-Owned Enterprises Minister Mustafa, Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik and Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia Nikolaos van Dam were among 108 VIPs onboard Garuda’s first flight to Amsterdam.

The reopening of the route is also expected to attract 200,000 tourists from the Netherlands this year, the tourism ministry has said.

(Amsterdam: 2 June 2010): Indonesia’s national airline, Garuda Indonesia, today took the first step in rebuilding its long-haul international network with the launch of a new daily service from Jakarta to Amsterdam via Dubai. Amsterdam is the first of several major European destinations which Garuda Indonesia intends to add to its fast-growing network over the next four years, including Frankfurt, London, Paris and Rome.

Garuda Indonesia’s re-entry into Amsterdam, after an absence of almost six years, marks a significant step forward in the airline’s global expansion strategy and its transformation into one of Asia’s most successful and profitable airlines. The new Jakarta-Amsterdam service provides passengers with greater connectivity and convenience and the choice of an alternative gateway between Asia and Europe. Garuda Indonesia becomes the first Indonesian airline to reopen flights to Europe after the European Union’s (E.U) ban prohibiting Indonesian carriers from operating in European airspace was lifted in July last year.

“Europe will play an integral role in our five-year ‘Quantum Leap’ strategy which includes growing our international network as well as developing new concepts for both business and leisure travel. Establishing a strong presence in Amsterdam and the rest of Europe is an important element in meeting these growth targets,” said Emirsyah Satar, President and CEO, Garuda Indonesia.

“We’re also planning to launch an Initial Public Offering (IPO) before the end of this year and our return to Europe is pivotal in determining the success of the IPO. We want to raise approximately US$300 million to support these long-term growth plans”, added Satar.

The daily service operates from Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport using the airline’s technically advanced 222-seater Airbus A330-200 aircraft with a two-class configuration - carrying 36 passengers in Executive Class and 186 in Economy Class. In Executive Class the aircraft offers fully reclining flat bed seats with 74 inch seat pitch. The aircraft also features individual touch-screen LCD screens in all classes; state-of-art in-flight entertainment systems with touch-screen Audio & Video On Demand (AVOD) delivering a choice of 25 feature films, 250 audio tracks and 25 video games.

“We are honoured that Garuda Indonesia selected Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to be the first airport to re-open connections to Europe. We are very delighted to have Garuda Indonesia back with this new daily service between Jakarta and Amsterdam. The new service also offers hassle free connections via Schiphol airport to many European destinations. Garuda Indonesia’s return to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol opens a new area for passengers to travel between Asia and Europe. Passengers can also choose Jakarta as an alternative gateway to Southeast Asia and Australia. We are confident this route will strengthen relations between Indonesia and the Netherlands, both in business and leisure”, said Pieter Verboom, CFO Schiphol Group.

Garuda Indonesia was recently upgraded to a four-star rating by Skytrax, the global benchmark for airline service standards, confirming the improvement in its front-line product and service quality. It was also named the ‘World’s Most Improved Airline’ at the Skytrax 2010 World Airline Awards in Hamburg, Germany last month. The Skytrax World Airline Awards is the airline industry’s most comprehensive and prestigious measure of service quality and is based on survey results from nearly 18 million international passengers.

“We have invested heavily in developing a service culture known as the ‘Garuda Indonesia Experience’ which combines warm Indonesian hospitality with quality service and comfort. In addition, we will introduce an ‘Immigration On-Board’ service which will allow passengers entering Indonesia to have their travel documents processed on-board, eliminating the need to queue at immigration counters upon arrival,” said Agus Priyanto, EVP Commercial, Garuda Indonesia.

Flight GA88 takes-off from Jakarta everyday at 20.40, arriving in Dubai at 02.00. It departs again at 03.15, arriving in Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport at 08.00 the next day. The return flight departs Amsterdam at 11.00, arriving in Dubai at 19.30. The same aircraft departs again at 20.30, arriving in Jakarta at 07.55.
