Indonesia Told To Improve Airline Safety And Infrastructure

JAKARTA, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- International Air Transport Association (IATA) Director General and Chief Operating Officer Giovanni Bisignani urged Indonesian airlines to prioritise safety and airport infrastructure including building a larger airport in Jakarta.

Bisignani said adopting international aviation standards and infrastructure development are important due to the rapid growth of passengers and cargo traffic in the country, China's Xinhua news agency reported Thursday, quoting a local media as saying.

"Coordinated government policies to ensure safety, cost efficiency, effective infrastructure and environmental sustainability are needed," Bisignani was quoted by the Jakarta Post as saying.

Such policies are important because Indonesia's aviation industry has great potential to grow, he said.

Indonesia is part of the Asia Pacific region whose aviation industry is the most profitable in the world, he said.

"Asia Pacific is leading in recovery with a forecast profit of US$2.2 billion and strong traffic growth," Bisignani said.

"Passengers and cargo traffic in the region grew at 15.5 percent and 29.8 percent respectively in June, above the global average," he added.

He said that Indonesia had improved its aviation safety as indicated by a recent decreases in non-fatal accidents.

The IATA reported that the number of non-fatal accidents in the country decreased to three this year from five in 2009 and 24 over the past five years.

Garuda to Name Banker for $300 Million Share Sale in Two Weeks

By Chan Sue Ling

Aug. 4 (Bloomberg) -- PT Garuda Indonesia, the nation’s largest carrier, expects to name an underwriter within two weeks for a planned $300 million initial public offering while it negotiates to restructure debt.

Garuda will “definitely” arrive at an agreement with creditors this month as lawyers complete an accord with European credit agencies, Chief Executive Officer Emirsyah Satar said in an interview today. The airline has already requested proposals from bankers for the IPO that may be in the third or fourth quarter of this year, Satar said.

“Our lawyers are trying to finalize all the documentation for the debt restructuring and we are going to sign this pretty soon,” Satar said by phone today. “More than three underwriters have already submitted their proposals.”

Concluding the creditor talks will pave the way for Garuda to raise funds needed to renew its fleet and expand its network. The Jakarta-based carrier, which plans to build a fleet of 116 planes by 2014, resumed flights to Europe in June after a gap of five years following the European Union’s lifting of a ban on some of the nation’s airlines.

The airline last month ordered six Airbus SAS A330s, worth $1.15 billion at list prices. It has firm orders for 10 Boeing Co. 777 twin-aisle aircraft and 25 Boeing single-aisle 737s, Pujobroto, an airline spokesman, said by phone today. The carrier also has options for another 25 of the single-aisle planes, he said.

The airline received 1 trillion rupiah ($112 million) from the Indonesian government in 2006 to help it keep flying and has been negotiating with bondholders since 2007 over notes that weren’t redeemed.

Garuda Indonesia makes an emergency landing in Manila

Last Saturday, July 31, GA883 (PK-GPA) from Osaka-Kansai bound for Denpasar made an emergency landing at 3pm in NAIA T1 because of technical problem in its engine 2. Passengers which are mostly Japanese disembarked for hotel accommodation. GA's Airbus 330-200 stayed here for repair until Monday morning (August 2). It departed at 06:45am.

I hope GA would return to Manila. Servicing their B737-800 will do. I really love its new livery "Nature's Wings" plus the blue and mint green color blending was a great brand and logo.

There she is rolling to runway for departure. May she have a pleasant flight.

Indonesia’s national airline, Garuda Indonesia, has started operating its new 162-seater Boeing 737-800NG aircraft from Singapore to Bali which features the carrier’s new ‘Nature’s Wing’ livery, signature interior and upgraded on-board services.

Garuda Indonesia’s new Boeing 737-800NG also includes individual touch-screen LCD TVs throughout Executive and Economy Classes with Video on Demand (VOD) entertainment systems offering 25 feature films and 250 audio tracks.

Indonesia, S. Korea to begin joint project on jet fighter production in 2012

19:08, August 11, 2010

Indonesia and South Korea will begin a joint project in 2012 on production of jet fighters, Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said here Wednesday.

The plan is expected to help revitalize Indonesia's defense industry.

Minister Purnomo and his South Korean counterpart Kim Tae-Young held a bilateral meeting in Jakarta earlier on Wednesday.

Purnomo was quoted by the Jakarta Post as saying that it was expected that the project would be able to build a jet fighter prototype in 2020. The planned cooperation for the project, dubbed the FSX project, was initiated in 2006.

Indonesian military has attempted to boost its weaponry by diversifying the source of the equipment as it has experienced the reliance on limited source, which could be harmful if a dispute occurs.

Three Sukhois to arrive from Russia in September

Thursday, August 12, 2010 17:25 WIB | National | | Viewed 207 time(s)

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Air Force Chief Marshal Imam Sufaat said three Sukhoi jet fighters ordered from Russia will arrive early in September 2010.

"The arrival of the jet fighters will be earlier than initial schedule on September 11, 2010. But they will arrive in stages, not all together," the air force chief said here on Thursday.

He said that two of the three warplanes (SU-27SKM) would arrive early next month while another one in the third week of September.

Sufaat said that the Sukhois would directly arrive at Sultan Hasanuddin airport for assembling and a flight test.

He said that seven New Sukhois were expected to be ready to conduct a fly-past during the 65th anniversary of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) on October 5, 2010.

Indonesia has had a fleet of seven Sukhoi jet fighters since 2003. In 2003, Indonesia purchased four Sukhois of the SU-30MK and SU-27SK types.

In 2007, Indonesia bought six more Sukhois after the Russian Sukhoi producer firm announced on August 21, 2007 the sales of six Sukhois to Indonesia worth US$300 million, or about Rp2.85 trillion.

The six Sukhois consisted of three type SU-30MK2 and three type SU-27SKM. The three SU-30MK2 have arrived in December 2008 and January 2009.

"We hope that the three others will arrive on schedule," he said.

The last time a Garuda plane touched down in Manila was in the 1990s, prior to the Asian financial crisis. GA currently codeshares with PR on flights to and from Jakarta.
