Sriwijaya Air Signs LOI For Embraer RJs

Nov 11, 2010

By Leithen Francis

Privately owned Indonesian carrier Sriwijaya Air has signed a letter-of-intent (LOI) to purchase 10 Embraer E-170/190s.

“We’ve not decided on the delivery schedule yet, as it is a letter-of-intent,” says Sriwijaya Financial Director Jefferson Jauwena.

“Most probably all the aircraft will be E-190s,” he says, adding that the LOI for 10 E-Jets also includes options for 10 more. He says the airline decided to acquire Embraer regional jets because “the aircraft can take off and land on short runways”.

Sriwijaya also considered the ATR 72-500, but Jauwena says the carrier decided against turboprops because “one of our friends [competitor Lion Air] has turboprops. “If you use the same aircraft, then there will be a price war,” he says, adding that it is better to differentiate one’s service offering.

Jauwena also says Sriwijaya signed a memorandum of understanding with Boeing last month for 10 Boeing 737-800s with options for 10 more. He says Boeing has offered first deliveries in 2015, but the airline is trying to get earlier delivery slots.

Sriwijaya operates older-model 737s and wants to start adding 737-800s no later then 2012, says Jauwena. If it is unable to get earlier delivery slots, then Sriwijaya will look for second-hand 737-700s or 737-800s on lease, he says.

The 737-800s will be used to launch new international routes and for further expansion in the domestic market, Jauwena adds.

Good move by Phuket and Bali, really good

Paradise to Paradise as Phuket Partners Bali

By Chutima Sidasathian and Alan Morison

Monday, November 8, 2010

AIRASIA has formally announced its Phuket-Bali flights with ''Paradise to Paradise'' as the theme. Beginning on December 17, the service will fly four times a week for the first 60 days before going daily.

A large media contingent from Phuket and Bangkok turned out today to hear the details, and to listen to the promise of the future for Phuket and its new-found co-paradise partner and former rival.

One point made loud and clear by Vice Governor Niwit Aroonrat was the need for Phuket to bring an end swiftly to tourist rip-offs and to improve its service mentality to be able to compete with destinations everywhere.

''Phuket is fortunate to have private companies as partners who are so keen to bring tourists,'' he said. ''We need to help each other.''

Khun Niwit is Phuket-born, and so will all the people connected with the new service be, with the exception of the pilots, said the General Manager of Thai AirAsia, Tassapon Bijleveld.

He said the concept of Phuket as an international AirAsia hub was working well, especially on flights to Hong Kong and Jakarta.

AirAsia was also launching a service from Bali to Darwin from December 17, he said, while flights from Indonesia to Australia's west coast capital of Perth were already extremely popular.

If just one in 10 of the three million visitors to Bali each year could be enticed to Phuket as well, the new paradise partnership would be extremely successful, he said.

The general manager of Phuket International Airport, Prathuang Somkhom, said that Phuket was now coping with 150 flights a day and that work on the five billion baht expansion would begin in March.

But the old terminal would remain intact while a new international terminal was being built, so there would be no interruption to services.

Australians are big fans of both Phuket and Bali and the Aussie Dollar is faring exceptionally well, so prospects for the paradise partnership are extremely good.

The loyalty of Aussies is also traditional. Australians were the first group to return to Phuket after the tsunami and the first to return to Bali after the bombings.

Airbus services between Phuket and Bali leave Phuket at 6.30am on the three-and-a-half hour flight and leave Bali for Phuket at 11.40am.

How does Kuta beach compare with Karon, Kata, Kalim and Kamala? Phuketwan's opinion is that a sunset walk along Kuta, with its superb long-line breaking wave, takes some beating. But Phuket's beaches offer a generally higher standard for everything except surf, and much greater variety.

Phuket lacks an Ubud, a cultural heartland where music, dance and art thrive, and a rice-field dotted hinterland with a stunning volcano in the background.

But there are plenty of similarities. Visiting Bali in the 1990s, we well remember being offered drugs in the dark behind one of the beaches, being pestered by more street vendors than Patong has ever seen, and being groped by a ladyboy in a Nazi helmet.

For regular visitors to Phuket, some feelings about the Bali version of paradise will be familiar. And we'd love to be a fly on the wall to hear what's said in Bali at the launch of the service to Phuket.

PT Garuda Indonesia joins Skyteam
Tuesday, November 23, 2010 23:28 WIB | Economic & Business

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - PT Garuda Indonesia joined the SkyTeam global alliance of airlines on Tuesday to expand its market and service to customers.

"This is part of transformation. This will strengthen Garuda`s position in the market," the company`s president director Emirsyah Satar said to newsmen after signing the agreement document for the state-owned company to join the SkyTeam here.

SkyTeam is an alliance for interliner flight cooperation to fly passengers to all destinations served by alliance members.

The alliance now has 13 airlines as its members namely Aeroflot, Aeromexico, Air Europa, Air France, Alitalia, China Southers, Czech Airlines, Delta Airlines, Kenya Airways, KLM, Korean Air, TAROM and Vietnam Airlines.

Two airlines preparing to join the alliance are China Eastern and China Airlines.

Emirsyah said the SkyTeam is trying to expand its network in Southeast Asia.
Garuda Indonesia`s participation, he said, is very positive for SkyTeam. "Garuda`s participation to SkyTeam with its vast network in Indonesia, the region, Australia and Asia would strengthen SkyTeam`s presence in Southeast Asia," he said.

It would also offer additional coverage and connectivity with the Asia Pacific region.
Some of the 30 new routes in the new network include Surabaya, Medan and Perth.
SkyTeam chairman Leo van Wijk admitted Garuda`s participation in the alliance ascertained growth this year.

"The impact on the airline company`s financial performance would possibly be around 10 percent besides efficiency and ease for passengers," he said.

SkyTeam managing director Marie-Joseph Male said Jakarta would be a new alternative route from and to Asia. "Garuda`s plan to expand its intercontinental network to Frankfurt, Paris, London and Rome would attract passengers from business community or international tourists," he said.

Emirsyah said the full implementation of SkyTeam by Garuda would finish in 2010.
"There are 21 conditions that we have to meet to become a SkyTeam member. I estimated in 12 to 18 months they could all be finished," he said.

He said although Garuda had already joined the SkyTeam the company would not ignore the domestic market.

"It will all be exploited. This year 53 million passengers are estimated to be covered by the industry while in the next four years the number could reach 90 millions," he said.

Garuda Indonesia at present serves 28 domestic routes and 18 international routes with bases in Jakarta and Denpasar.

Garuda Indonesia received an IOSA Certificate in May 2008 as proof that its flight security system has met the international standard set by the International Air Transport Association.

In July 2009 as part of its transformation efforts in all its business aspects Garuda Indonesia launched new service concept of Garuda Indonesia Experience that puts forward Indonesia`s cultural varieties and warmth while continuing prioritizing security and comfort for passengers.

In line with the corporate strategy put in the Quantum Leap 2014 program Garuda Indonesia would increase the number of its fleet from presently 81 to 116 consisting of Boeing 737-800NG, Airbus 330-200/300 and Boeing 777ER.

The number of international departures are also expected to rise 300 percent to 1,222 per week with the number of passengers targeted to reach 28 millions.

In December 2009 Garuda Indonesia achieved a four star rating from airline service rating agency SkyTrax based upon its assessment on the quality of Garuda`s service during flights.(*)

SkyTeam Headlines
Garuda Indonesia Joins SkyTeam
Alliance expands its reach in Southeast Asia and Australia

Jakarta, 23 November 2010 – Garuda Indonesia, the flag carrier of Indonesia, today signed an agreement to join the SkyTeam airline alliance in 2012. Garuda will expand SkyTeam’s presence in Southeast Asia, adding 30 new destinations to the alliance network.

Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and a fast growing emerging market. SkyTeam is actively working to grow its presence in the region and Garuda is a very welcome addition to the alliance. Garuda has a broad Indonesian and regional network and is able to offer additional coverage and improved connections to the Asia Pacific. Some of the 30 new destinations in the SkyTeam network are Surabaya in East Java, Medan in North Sumatra and Perth in Australia.

“Joining SkyTeam is a long-term development strategy for Garuda Indonesia, and for years we have been upgrading our service and actively forging cooperation with SkyTeam member airlines with this objective in mind,” said Emirsyah Satar, President and CEO of Garuda. “As the first Indonesian airline to join this world-class alliance, our strategic target is to continuously strengthen profitability and boost international market competitiveness”.

“The most fitting word to characterize 2010 for SkyTeam is growth. Welcoming a member that covers a considerable part of Southeast Asia definitely illustrates our expansion”, said SkyTeam Chairman Leo van Wijk. “Indonesia has great cultural and historical wealth, is rich in a range of natural resources and has seen impressive economic developments. Garuda’s financial and operational restructuring has proven very successful and I am convinced that this will help position the airline as a major player in the region”. Garuda Indonesia was named the ‘World’s Most Improved Airline’ at the Skytrax 2010 World Airline Awards.

“Jakarta will serve as an alternate gateway to and from Asia,” said SkyTeam Managing Director Mr. Marie-Joseph Malé. “Garuda’s consideration to expand its intercontinental network to Frankfurt, Paris, London and Rome will make the airline an increasingly attractive option for business and leisure travelers”.

Garuda already cooperates extensively with Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines, China Southern and China Airlines and will establish additional codeshare agreements with other SkyTeam partners. The joining process leading to full entry into SkyTeam is expected to be completed by 2012.

Indonesian flag carrier apologizes for flight chaos
Posted: 23 November 2010 1606 hrs

JAKARTA : National carrier Garuda Indonesia was forced to issue a public apology Tuesday for three days of flight chaos caused by the loss of crew rotation data during a switch to a new operating system.

More than 700 passengers have been affected by flight delays and cancellations which started Sunday and were continuing on Tuesday, company officials said.

Flights to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur were among those cancelled or rescheduled, as the company forked out tens of thousands of dollars in hotel expenses for stranded passengers.

Bookings had also been shut down until the problem -- caused by someone failing to plug in a cable during the software switch -- was sorted out, hopefully by Wednesday.

"Garuda Indonesia expresses its deepest regret and sincerest apologies to all its customers for the recent flight delay and cancellation on account of a new operational monitoring system being implemented," the state-owned company said on its website.

"The necessary repairs are currently being carried out and we expect to normalise all operations as soon as possible."

Garuda president Emirsyah Satar told reporters on Monday that the failure of the 1.5-million-dollar operating system had led to the loss of crew flight schedules, resulting in staff being called to fly on their days off.

"The management apologises to our customers and also flight crew for this mess.... One unplugged cable caused us to lose all the crew schedule data," he was quoted as saying in the Jakarta Globe daily.

The incident overshadowed Garuda's entry Tuesday into the SkyTeam Alliance alongside Air France and Korean Airlines, among others.

It is also an embarrassing blow to an airline that has been flying high since it was removed from a European Union safety blacklist last year.

Garuda has bought new aircraft, opened new routes and is planning an initial public offering this year to fund further expansion.

Garuda grounds flights

JAKARTA (Indonesia) - INDONESIA'S national carrier is scrambling to fix a computer glitch that has grounded domestic flights for hundreds of passengers.

Garuda Indonesia spokesman Pujobroto said on Wednesday the problem started over the weekend when the airline tried to upgrade software for work schedules of its 2,800 pilots and cabin crew.

He said a technician failed to plug in a data cable before the switch and that wiped the system clean.

At least 26 domestic flights have been cancelled since Sunday.

International flights so far have not been affected.

Garuda has 81 aircraft and operates around 2,000 flights weekly. -- AP

Garuda must report on cancellations by Friday: Govt
Erwida Maulia, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Wed, 11/24/2010 8:32 PM | Business

National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has until Friday to tell the government why computer glitches led to dozens of cancelled flights this week, a minister says

State-Owned Enterprises Minister Mustafa Abubakar said on Wednesday that Garuda must explain what caused the disruption of the airline’s IT system, how it was handled and how Garuda treated affected passengers.

“Whether it was caused by negligence, carelessness or maybe even intentionally done - I want this to be investigated thoroughly and I want the report to be submitted to me by Friday,” Mustafa told reporters at the Presidential Palace.

He told Garuda compensate delayed passengers well and hoped the incident would not adversely affect the airline’s planned initial public offering.

“We’ve observed how Garuda’s image has been improving. It has received many rewards and its financial performance is getting better. I hope the recent incident will not significantly affect [the IPO].”

AirAsia Indonesia to Surpass Malaysia Business, Fernandes Says

By Rishaad Salamat and Wing-Gar Cheng | November 26, 2010

AirAsia Bhd. Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes said the carrier’s Indonesian operations may surpass its Malaysian unit, which is now more than three times as big.

The Indonesia business may pass Malaysia in the “not-too- distant future,” Fernandes said today in a Bloomberg TV interview in Kuala Lumpur, without elaboration. “We’re really in the best playground for growth.”

Southeast Asia’s largest budget carrier more-than-doubled third-quarter net income as it grows its main Malaysian unit and ventures in Indonesia and Thailand to take advantage of rising regional travel demand. The airline plans to add as many as 12 planes a year and is targeting opportunities in Vietnam, the Philippines, India and China, Fernandes said.

“We believe that the market has underestimated AirAsia’s growth potential in riding the sector recovery,” Juliana Ramli, an analyst at HwangDBS Vickers Sdn. in Kuala Lumpur, wrote in a note to clients today. The analyst recommends buying the stock.

AirAsia rose 5.5 percent to 2.69 ringgit at 11:49 a.m. in Kuala Lumpur. The stock has risen 95 percent this year compared with a 19 percent gain on the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Index.

The carrier, based in the Malaysian capital, reported net income of 327.3 million ringgit ($104 million) for the third quarter, with sales climbing 34 percent to 987.6 million ringgit, the company said yesterday.

Indonesia AirAsia’s passenger number rose 8 percent to 1.1 million in the quarter, according to a statement. The Malaysian operations boosted passenger numbers 12 percent to 4 million, it said.

Malaysian Airline System Bhd. returned to profit in the same period to Sept. 30, reporting net income of 233.2 million ringgit, it said in a separate exchange filing yesterday.

AirAsia could also be “very interested” if Airbus SAS decides to offer a revamped version of its A320 single-aisle plane with a new engine, Fernandes said. The Toulouse, France- based planemaker has said it is considering such move.

Airbus is already working through orders for 175 A320s from AirAsia, according to data on its website.

SIA and Garuda Indonesia to Codeshare
Friday, 26 November 2010

From 1 December 2010,
customers of Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia will have more flights to choose from between Singapore and Denpasar (Bali), following the signing of a codeshare agreement between the two carriers.

Under the agreement, the two airlines will codeshare on a reciprocal basis on all flights between Singapore and Denpasar. Singapore Airlines operates three flights per day on the route while Garuda has daily flights.

“We are naturally delighted to have signed a codeshare agreement with Garuda Indonesia. It stems from our mutual desire to offer more choice of flights for our customers, enhance the popular island destination of Bali’s accessibility to the world and maximise the advantages of our route networks for the benefit of customers of both airlines,” said Mr Ng Kian Wah, Singapore Airlines’ Senior Vice President, Sales Regions. “Garuda’s customers will be able to enjoy convenient connections from Singapore to other cities, while SIA’s customers may benefit from Garuda’s links to many other domestic points in Indonesia from Denpasar.”
