Garuda Indonesia Aims at 16 Million Passenger
In the first half of 2011, Garuda's total passengers reached 7.9 million people.

VIVAnews - PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk set the target of number of passengers to 16 million passengers by the end of this year. The target number of passengers is doubled compared to the first half of 2011.

"In the end of year the number of passengers is usually more than the first half," Garuda Indonesia Executive Vice President of Finance and Group CFO Elisa Lumbantoruan told VIVAnews.com in her office, Garuda Indonesia building, Cengkareng, Tangerang, Thursday, August 4, 2011.

Elisa said, in the first half of 2011, Garuda Indonesia's number of passengers reached 7.9 million people. Of these, 730,000 were passengers of Citilink. "So, the contribution of Citilink passenger was approximately 10 percent," she said.

The number of Garuda Indonesia passenger during the first half of 2011, she explained, rose 42.2 percent compared to the same period last year. In fact, Garuda's management is optimistic that the number of passenger will remains increasing up to the end of this year.

Elisa went on to say that the number tends to increase from quarter to quarter. In the first quarter, the passenger number is usually lower than subsequent quarters.

"So, seen from the figure of 7.9 million passengers, the minimum is doubled, or 16 million passengers by the end of the year," said Elisa.

Garuda Indonesia is currently in the process of preparing to make Citilink its subsidiary and to operate independently. The segregation will be conducted in the first quarter of 2012 at the earliest.

Currently, Citilink Garuda owns six aircrafts and later this year it will operate 10 aircrafts consisting of B-737 and A320. Citilink runs eight routes, namely from Jakarta, Surabaya, Batam, Banjarmasin, Denpasar, Balikpapan, Medan and Makassar.

I don't think that Garuda will be looking at the african market at this moment because they are still focus in expanding its domestic network and building its brand in Europe. After the reintroduction of the CGK-AMS via DXB in 2010, GA would be reintroducing CGK-FRA/LHR/CDG via DXB and a direct CGK-AMS using its new B777-300ER in 2013.

I think Garuda will rely on its future skyteam partner, Kenya Airways for its African market, for example Garuda will operate the CGK-DXB route while Kenya Airways will operate DXB to African Cities via Nairobi

The current aircraft A330-200 cannot make it nonstop (not with the payload they're carrying anyways), so Garuda will introduce nonstops progressively as B777-300ERs are delivered.

Exactly. Also GA is still rebuiling its image in Europe. It would be a financial suicide if GA flies directly to AMS. The only fleet able to do this at this moment is its Boeing 747-400.

and it would be financial suicide since Garuda does not have interline agreement with any European carrier to direct GA passengers to destinations other than AMS. I am certain that the postponement of the 77W delivery has something to do with GA entry date into Skyteam. CMIIW

You're right, thats why the B77W will be delivered to Garuda in 2013, a year after they joined Skyteam.

And apparently GA already has an interline agreement with KLM for major routes from AMS, but they never add these interline destinations on their website, but KLM already added their interline destinations with GA to Indonesian cities.

Garuda Indonesia Finalises Airbus Order for 25 Aircraft
Wednesday, 10 August 2011

http://www.asiatraveltips.com/news11...ndonesia.shtml

Garuda Indonesia
has finalised an order with Airbus for the purchase of 25 A320 Family aircraft, firming up an MoU announced during the Paris Air Show in June.

The order makes Garuda Indonesia a new A320 Family customer and covers 15 standard A320s and 10 A320neo aircraft for operation by the carrier's low cost unit Citilink. The airline will announce its engine selection for the aircraft in the near future.

"This order will ensure that Citilink is equipped to realise its full potential," said Emirsyah Satar, President & CEO, Garuda Indonesia. "We are confident that these modern, eco-efficient aircraft will enable us to win an important share of the fast-growing budget market in Indonesia, while providing our passengers with a high quality product."

The A320 Family comprises the A318, A319, A320 and A321 models.

Govt Considers Special Terminal for Garuda
Thursday, 11 August, 2011

http://www.tempointeractive.com/hg/n...351178,uk.html

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The government is considering granting a special terminal for PT Garuda Indonesia flights. “We will try to allocate the airline a dedicated terminal,” State-Owned Enterprises Minister Mustafa Abubakar said on Tuesday.

The terminal is expected to facilitate the airline’s flight operations. “We hope Garuda can develop,” Mustafa added.

Last year, Garuda’s management suggested such a terminal at Soekarno-Hatta or Ngurah Rai Airports. The suggestion was linked to its plan to join a trans-airline global alliance to deepen its penetration in the international market.

New Lombok International Airport to be inaugurated on October 1, 2011
Aug 10, 2011

http://www.eturbonews.com/24540/new-...october-1-2011

The brand new Lombok International Airport, capable of receiving wide-bodied aircraft like Airbus 330 and Boeing 767, is to be inaugurated by Indonesia’s President Yudhoyono on October 1, said Governor of West Nusatenggara, M. Zainul Majdi, as reported to Antara.

Located in Central Lombok, some 40 km south of the present Mataram Selaparang Airport, the Lombok International Airport will have a runway of 2,750 meters x 40 meters and apron to accommodate 10 Airbus 330 aircraft, explained Operational and Technical Director of state-owned Airport Management company, PT Angkasa Pura-I, Haryoso Catur Prayitno, in Central Lombok recently.

The airport is built to handle 3 million passengers a year. Airport simulations will be conducted on September 5-8, 2011.

Initially planned to be operational by July 2011, the airport opening was delayed due to the expansion of the airport terminal area from 14,000 square meters to 21,000 square meters.

The island of Lombok together with Sumbawa - immediate neighbors to the fabled island of Bali - are the major islands that comprise the province of West Nusatenggara. Lombok has grown in popularity for its pristine beaches at Kuta and Senggigi and wonderful underwater life at the Gili islands. Mt. Rinjani, the third highest mountain in Indonesia, is also a favorite area for trekkers.

Next year, West Nusatenggara plans to hold the Visit Lombok-Sumbawa Year 2012. With the operation of the new airport, Lombok hopes to welcome 1 million direct international tourist arrivals within the next few years.

Lion Air Establishing LCC In Malaysia
Aug 8, 2011

http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/gener...0In%20Malaysia

Lion Air, Indonesia’s largest airline, plans to transform little-known carrier Berjaya Air into a low-cost carrier for Malaysia.

The Berjaya Group tells the Malaysia stock exchange that Lion Air will own 49% and it will retain 51%, with the deal expected to be concluded in the second half of the year. It says the Berjaya Group and Lion will participate in a rights issue to raise 60 million ringgit ($20 million) to recapitalize the airline.

“The local aviation industry has seen some tremendous changes with the introduction of several regional and long-haul budget airline operators during the last decade,” says the Berjaya Group, adding that “the success of the business models of these low-cost carriers has proven that there is ample demand for the movement of passengers to and from Malaysia, as well as among regional destinations.

“Berjaya Group hopes the proposed joint venture with Lion Air will allow Berjaya Air to successfully expand its business horizon beyond Malaysia by capitalizing on its Indonesian partner’s experience and ‘economies of scale’ in the aviation services industry with a large fleet of aircraft and an expansive reach of destinations,” it says.

Berjaya Air operates three de Havilland Dash 7s and one ATR 72-500, according to the Ascend database. It is based at Kuala Lumpur International Airport but also operates from Singapore to Malaysia’s Tioman and Redang islands, where the Berjaya Group owns resorts.

Lion Air has wanted to expand out of Indonesia for many years to compete against AirAsia in Malaysia. A few years ago, AirAsia expanded internationally by launching Indonesia AirAsia.

Garuda’s Low-Cost Carrier to Fly Internationally in 2012

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-0...n-2012-1-.html

State-owned PT Garuda Indonesia, the nation’s largest airline, said its low-cost carrier will start flying international routes from next year.

Citilinkplans to fly to Singapore and destinations in Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia, Garuda Chief Financial Officer Elisa Lumbantoruan said at a press briefing in Jakarta today. The unit will be spun off into a fully owned company called PT Citilink Indonesia in 2012 to help differentiate it from Garuda’s full-service operations, President Director Emirsyah Satar said in an interview today.

“We will strengthen domestic routes, and are looking to expand to regional destinations,” he said.

Citilink, which currently operates five Boeing Co. 737s, has 55 Airbus SAS A320 planes and two more 737s on order, Con Korfiatis, an adviser to the Citilink board of directors, said today. It is due to receive the first of the Airbuses next month, he said. The low-cost carrier boosted passenger numbers by 60 percent to 731,000 in the first half from a year earlier and said it expects to fly 2 million passengers this year.

The government is processing a license for Citilink, which is expected to account for 30 percent of Garuda’s net revenue in 2015, Lumbantoruan said. Citilink had revenue of $48.1 million in 2010, or 2.2 percent of Garuda’s $2.15 billion revenue, according to the airline’s annual report.

Hopefully they will not only fly from Jakarta, but also large cities in Indonesia such as Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, Makassar, Balikpapan, Denpasar and Manado where the dominance of other low cost carrier such as Air Asia and Singapore based Silk Air are still present in the international sector of these cities.

^ Berjaya Air base is not at Kuala Lumpur Intl Airport as reported. It might have that confused to the previous airport in Subang which is now known as Subang Skypark (SAAS Airport).

anyway, hope it will materialise soon. i couldnt find such great news in the local newspaper here in Malaysia.
