Mandala hopes to fly again before year end
The Jakarta Post | Wed, 10/05/2011 9:57 PM

The new management of privately-owned Mandala Airlines is set to resume its services before the holiday season at the end of the year.

Sandiaga Uno, the owner of Saratoga group, which has acquired a 51 percent stake in the airline, said Mandala would buy five new aircraft and rent five others to support the plan.

He added the move would require US$250 million in funding, and that it would come from Saratoga and Tiger Airways, which owns a 33 percent stake in Mandala.

“We’re still mulling what planes [to buy and rent]. Once the government permits us [to fly again], we will follow it up. We hope to be able to start flying again before this year-end’s holiday,” Sandiaga said on Wednesday in Jakarta, as quoted by kontan.co.id.

He said that among the airplanes would probably be an Airbus A320.

Earlier this year, Mandala announced it would temporarily halt operations after revealing huge debts of Rp 2.45 trillion (US$286.65 million).

In May, Saratoga Group acquired a 51 percent stake in the airline, while Singapore-based Tiger Airways acquired 33 percent.

Other creditors, through a debt-to-equity swap, hold the remaining 16 percent.

The new management of Mandala wants it to provide budget flights on domestic and international routes.

Airbus Military inks deal to save PT DI
The Jakarta Post | Wed, 10/05/2011 9:47 PM

Airbus Military signed a deal with Indonesian state aircraft maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia (DI) on Wednesday in a move to support the latter's restructuring.

The agreement was signed by Airbus Military CEO Domingo Ureña-Raso, PT DI managing director Budi Santoso and state asset management firm PT Perusahaan Pengelola Aset (PPA) managing director Boyke Mukijat in Jakarta.

Budi said the signing of the new deal was a follow-up to a strategic partnership agreement signed by the three companies in July.

“This is part of sustainable efforts to restructure the company [PT DI], to make it a healthy company that can compete in Asia Pacific and globally,” Budi said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

He added that while PPA would help with the financing, Airbus would provide technical support in the production and marketing of DI aircraft.

“This partnership also includes a concrete initiative to identify what needs to be done to save PT DI,” Budi said.

Finnair opens Jakarta ticketing office to tap growing market
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Fri, 10/07/2011 7:41 AM

Finnish flag carrier Finnair will open a ticketing office in Jakarta on Thursday to tap the growing demand of Indonesian passengers traveling to Europe.

“We are interested in exploring the Indonesian market. With the country’s robust growth, more and more Indonesians are traveling to Europe for business and pleasure,” Finnair sales director for Singapore and Southeast Asia Petteri Kostermaa told reporters in a ceremony to inaugurate the office.

“Setting up a sales office is the first step in a process that may lead to Finnair opening a route to Jakarta.”

Passengers traveling from Indonesia can fly to Helsinki from Singapore, which is said to be the fastest connecting route to northern Europe.

Kostermaa also said that having a presence in Indonesia through its partnership with AVS Indonesia would allow Finnair to better understand the needs of travelers in Indonesia so that the airline could better meet their expectations.

“We are partnering with Garuda Indonesia, Value Air, Jet Star and Silk Air to fly Indonesian passengers to Singapore, and we are looking for more partnerships with local airlines,” Kostermaa said.

The local airlines also offered connections from Denpasar, Surabaya, Medan, Makassar and Palembang via Singapore to Europe.

Finnair uses the Airbus A340-300 and A330-300 wide-body planes, A321, A320 and A319 narrow-body planes and Embraer 190 and Embraer 170 regional jets to connect Helsinki to smaller cities.

The airline offers business and economy class flights to more than 50 destinations in Europe and 10 in Asia.

Finnish Ambassador to Jakarta Kai Sauer said he was extremely happy to officiate the event.

“Finland sees Indonesia as an important partner because Indonesia is a member of G20 and ASEAN,” Sauer said.

“The growing middle class in Indonesia creates a very attractive market,” he added.

A number of other airlines have also opened offices in Jakarta, although there were no direct flights yet from Jakarta.

Vietnam Airlines, for example, only flies from Singapore to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

“Passengers from Jakarta can fly with our code-share partners Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines or use other airlines at their convenience,” Vietnam Airlines general manager Rini Indrati told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

“We are still waiting for confirmation to fly directly in the summer season of March or April.”

Kenya Airways also uses a similar arrangement via Bangkok.

“There are some Indonesians who are flying to Nairobi, almost every day. They usually work with UN agencies,” Kenya general manager Defy Bondang told the Post.

Garuda Keeps Up Expansion, Eyes More Domestic Flights
Muhamad Al Azhari | October 12, 2011

source, http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/busin...flights/471225

National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia plans to buy 18 small-sized airplanes for $720 million from either Brazil’s Embraer or Canada’s Bombardier to help add more domestic flights.

Garuda’s chief financial officer, Elisa Lumbantoruan, said on Wednesday that the state-owned airline was looking for planes that could carry up to 100 passengers as it attempts to replace its aging Boeing 737-300s and 737-500s.

“These new planes will be serving cities with small airports, such as Malang and Ternate,” Elisa said, referring to cities in East Java and Maluku.

He also said the new fleet of planes would help Garuda develop secondary hubs around the country.

The airline’s primary hubs are currently in Jakarta and Denpasar. Possibilities for secondary hubs include major cities such as Medan, Makassar, Surabaya and Balikpapan.

The airline currently flies 31 domestic routes to cities across the archipelago.

“I hope we can wrap up the deal by the end of this month,” Elisa said.

The new fleet of aircraft would be operated by Garuda, he continued, and not its affiliated low-cost carrier, Citilink.

Adding more planes would also help Garuda expand its flights into the eastern part of the country, Elisa said. That would add to the region’s connectivity and aid the government’s Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesian Economic Growth (MP3EI) program.

Funding for the purchase is expected to come partly from the proceeds from the airline’s Rp 4.75 trillion ($532 million) initial public offering in February.

This latest expansion plan follows Garuda’s Aug. 9 announcement that it had finalized a $2.13 billion order for 25 new Airbus aircraft.

That announcement confirmed an agreement made in June between Garuda and Airbus at the Paris Air Show. The 25 new Airbus A320s, including 10 fuel-efficient A320neos, will replace the airline’s Boeing 737-300s and 737-400s currently flown by Citilink.

Citilink flies five 737s and is expected to receive the new Airbus planes in early 2014.

Silk Air links Bandung with S’pore
Yuli Tri Suwarni, The Jakarta Post, Bandung | Thu, 10/13/2011 8:53 AM

Regional airline Silk Air
commenced a route linking city-state Singapore with Bandung on Tuesday, as two Malaysian airlines brought their flight routes to the West Java provincial capital to an end.

Silk Air’s maiden flight, with 70 passengers on board, including the Singapore Ambassador to Indonesia, Ashok Mirpuri, and Silk Air chief executive Marvin Tan arrived at Husein Sastranegara International Airport at 4:23 p.m.

Tan said that Bandung was Silk Air’s ninth destination in Indonesia, after the subsidiary of Singapore Airlines opened its eighth route linking Changi with Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru, Riau, in February.

“This is our strong commitment to the air travel industry in Bandung, and to strengthen the links between two countries in tourism and business connections. Factory outlets are always wonderful for Singaporeans, as good as natural attractions, like Tangkuban Parahu,” Tan said after landing.

Meanwhile, airport head of operations, Soetrisno, said that Silk Air had added another choice for passengers traveling the Bandung-Singapore route, in addition to Air Asia and Batavia Air.

Tan said that Silk Air gave a different experience to customers, since they could enjoy fully serviced, premium air travel in economy or business classes.

Passengers can fly to 37 cities in 11 countries throughout Asia and Europe, as Silk Air is connected to the network of Singapore Airlines, he added.

However, Tan did not not set a target in terms of customer levels, saying “the higher, the better”.

“We have to work very hard to get our customers to depend on our value. Talking about pricing, we have to be competitive. It depends on how the market grows,” he said.

Initially, Silk Air will fly three times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Starting on Oct. 30, the airline will fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Soetrisno said that the airlines abandoning the Bandung route were flag carrier Malaysia Airlines and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Firefly.

Malaysia Airlines started servicing the route in July, but abandoned the Bandung-Kuala Lumpur route on Oct. 4, while Firefly started the Bandung-Johor Bahru route in August and stopped operation on Oct. 2.

Soetrisno said that both airlines had a average load factor of 50 to 60 percent.

Garuda targets Korean travelers
2011-10-16

Source, http://www.koreaherald.com/national/...20111016000321

Indonesian airline adds new flights, hires Korean flight attendants

JAKARTA ―
Garuda Indonesia, after years of concentration on safety improvements, is preparing to aggressively target Korean passengers, adding new flights and hiring Korean flight attendants.

“Korea is a prospective market for us. Business between Korea and Indonesia is growing strongly,” said Emirsyah Satar, chief executive of Garuda Indonesia, explaining the company’s strategies for Korea, currently its sixth-largest market outside Indonesia.

“You will see more Garuda flights in the next few years,” the executive said in a press conference last week.

Currently, the Indonesian flag carrier flies to Incheon only, taking Koreans to Jakarta six times a week and to the resort island of Bali five times.

Garuda will go daily on both routes in the coming weeks ― the Incheon-Jakarta route from the middle of December and the Incheon-Bali route from the start of November.

The demand for air travel between Korea and Indonesia is expected to grow steadily, its officials said. The number of Korean visitors to Indonesia topped 300,000 last year, up 17 percent from a year earlier. There are more than 50,000 Koreans residing in Jakarta and elsewhere in the country, making up the largest expat community in Indonesia.

On top of increased flights, Garuda is striving to improve in-flight services.

Agus Priyanto, an executive in charge of services, said the firm’s efforts to meet the needs of Koreans go from a little detail such as their preference of slippers to socks to their desire for internet access on board.

“We’re trying to provide full connectivity on flights to Korea,” Priyanto said, explaining local regulations as the hindrance.

Emirsyah Satar, CEO of Garuda Indonesia

As part of its efforts to provide tailored services to Koreans, Garuda has hired 22 new Korean flight attendants early this year, boosting the number of Korean crew members to 33.

“We’re confident that Korean passengers will recognize our efforts,” Priyanto said.

An immigration officer checks passports and visa application forms of passengers on board a Garuda light from Incheon to Jakarta. (Garuda Indonesia)

A key reason for the confidence is the “Visa On Board” service, which is offered exclusively on some Garuda flights.

Two immigration officers, on board its flights from Incheon to Jakarta, check passengers’ passports and process their visa, saving them from the trouble of having to line up at immigration counters on the ground. The service will be expanded soon to include the Incheon-Bali route, the executive said.

Globally and in Korea, Garuda is investing to improve its brand and corporate image, after a history of poor safety, CEO Satar said.

In 2004, the European Union banned Garuda, along with other Indonesian airlines, from flying to the continent, citing a string of deadly crashes. The ban was lifted in 2009.

Satar stressed that the firm was named the world’s “most improved airline” in 2010 by Skytrax, a London-based research firm specializing in the airline industry, as a result of its persistent efforts to improve.

In fact, 2010 was a landmark year for Garuda in its campaign to become a world-class airline.

Skytrax lifted Garuda to a four-star status from three stars, putting it on par with Korean flag carrier Korean Air and one star short of Asiana Airlines.

The Center for Asia Pacific Aviation chose Garuda as the airline turnaround of the year. Garuda also signed a preliminary agreement to join international airline alliance SkyTeam, and is now aiming for entry by the second quarter of 2013.
