Garuda named “best airline in the world”

Quote:
National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has been recognized as ‘Best International Airline’ according to a recent independent survey of all major airlines throughout the world.

The customer satisfaction survey, conducted by research company Roy Morgan, ranked Garuda Indonesia ahead of other leading airlines, such as Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Air New Zealand with 91 percent of the 3,943 respondents being “very satisfied” with the airline’s products and services.

“We are thrilled to receive this award, as it endorses Garuda Indonesia’s transformation and progress toward becoming one of Asia’s leading airlines. This valuable recognition by our Australian customers motivates us even further to deliver the highest standards of service on the ground and in the air," Bagus Y. Siregar, Garuda Indonesia’s senior general manager for Australia and the South West Pacific, said in a statement sent to The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

The Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Award comes after a string of accolades, including the four-star rating by Skytrax, the global benchmark for airline service standards, in 2009.

Garuda Indonesia was also named the World’s Most Improved Airline at the Skytrax World Airline Awards in Hamburg, and Asia’s leading service quality airline by the Center for Asia-Pacific Aviation (CAPA) in 2010.

All awards recognize the success of Garuda Indonesia’s Qantum Leap program, which includes the revitalization of its existing fleet and the introduction of “The Garuda Indonesia Experience”, the carrier’s service concept that offers a uniquely Indonesian level of service both in-flight and on the ground.

"Garuda Indonesia will continue to invest in enhancing its service offerings in order to become a five-star carrier by 2015," Siregar said. (nfo)

Mandala Airlines back in business

5 April 2012 Last updated at 05:19 GMT

Indonesia's Mandala Airlines will take to the skies again on Thursday, more than a year after going bankrupt and ceasing operations.

The new lease of life comes courtesy of fresh investment from Singapore's Tiger Airways and Indonesian private equity firm Saratoga Capital.

Sandiaga Uno, founder of Saratoga Capital, tells the BBC that a growing middle class in Indonesia means demand for flying can only increase.

He does, however, stress the need for upgrading airport infrastructure.

Garuda Indonesia Orders 11 Airbus A330s on Travel Growth
By Femi Adi and Gonzalo Vina - Apr 11, 2012 5:15 PM GMT+0700

PT Garuda Indonesia (GIAA), the nation’s biggest listed carrier, signed a firm order for 11 Airbus SAS (EAD) A330-300 planes as economic growth spurs business and leisure travel.

The planes will be used for services to countries including South Korea, Japan and Australia, Elisa Lumbantoruan, finance director, said by phone today. The deal is valued at $2.5 billion based on average list prices. Carriers usually get discounts for large orders.

The accord, signed during a visit by U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron to Indonesia, boosts Garuda’s backlog of orders for Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc-powered A330s to 21, Airbus said in a statement. PT Lion Mentari Airlines, Indonesia’s biggest low- cost carrier, also signed a record contract for 230 Boeing Co. (BA) aircraft in February because of rising demand.

Garuda launch Jakarta-Taipei flights

Quote:
Flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia will launch a maiden route connecting Jakarta to Taipei on Thursday night.

"Tonight we start our direct flights to Taipei, which later would have flights on daily basis," Garuda marketing and sales director Elisa Lumbantoruan said at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Thursday.

He said Taipei was a perfect destination for business, vacations and education.

Elisa said that the new route was part of Garuda's “quantum leap” implementation, with the aim of having 194 aircraft by 2015.

Garuda currently has 92 aircraft.

The Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry recorded that the number Taiwanese tourists to Indonesia have increased steadily in the last few years.

In 2011, there were 236,000 Taiwanese nationals visiting Indonesia, up from 213,000 in 2010.

As of February, 14,100 Taiwanese tourists visited Indonesia this year.

Garuda to buy Airbus freighters to boost cargo business

Quote:
National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia plans to purchase three Airbus A330F freighters worth US$600 million in order to tap into the growing cargo market, a company executive says.

The airline’s marketing director Elisa Lumbantoruan said that the freighters were expected to enter service in 2014.

“The cargo business is very promising nowadays because the demand for fast-moving consumer goods distribution across the country and abroad is high,” Elisa told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

According to research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan, Indonesia’s air cargo volume will increase by 5.7 percent this year to 920,000 tons from 870,000 tons throughout last year.

Frost & Sullivan said that the four main airports in the country — Soekarno-Hatta in Cengkareng, Juanda in Surabaya, Ngurah Rai in Bali and Polonia in Medan — accounted for 47.2 percent of the total air cargo in 2011, with 36 percent passing through Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Garuda saw 10.8 percent growth in cargo throughout last year, from 207,000 tons in 2010 to 229,000 tons in 2011.

Based on the company’s recent data, they were able to carry 65,488 tons of goods in the first quarter of this year, a 16.7 percent increase from 56,127 tons carried during the same period last year.

Elisa also said that on a quarterly basis, cargo grew by 9.07 percent from 60,044 tons in the fourth quarter of last year.

“We are currently waiting for a slot from the regulator for our freighters,” he said.

In addition, the company also spent Rp 5 billion (US$530,000) to expand their cargo warehouse at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to 4,625 square meters in order to accommodate more goods.

The renovation was part of a mid-term program to position Cargo Garuda Indonesia as “the leader for Asian cargo brands by 2015”.

Moreover, Garuda picked the A330F aircraft for efficiencies in future maintenance as it has already ordered a number of other Airbus aircraft.

Two months ago, Garuda signed a purchase contract for 11 A330-300s worth $2.54 billion from the European aerospace manufacturer Airbus.

The deal was signed by Garuda Indonesia president director Emirsyah Satar and Airbus program vice president Tom William, and witnessed by President Susilo Bambang Yudho-yono and UK Prime Minister David Cameron at the State Palace during the latter’s visit to Indonesia.

The 11 planes will be delivered from the fourth quarter of this year until the fourth quarter of 2017.

“We currently operate a fleet of 16 A330-200/300s to serve destinations in the North and Southeast Asia,” he added. (nfo)

Garuda to provide in-flight Internet connection

Quote:
National flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia will provide an in-flight wireless Internet connection through its new business model called “In Flight Connectivity”.

“This [Internet] service will be useful for passengers who take flights longer than two hours,” the company’s executive vice president for risk management, business development and strategy, Judi Rifajantoro, said Thursday.

Garuda is currently considering several options, such as whether the company will charge passengers to use the Internet, which class will be provided with the service and the Internet-connection speed.

Judi added that the company would be collaborating with Indonesia’s largest telecommunications provider, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia, Antara news agency reported. (swd)

Manufacturers see the Indonesian aviation market as a goldmine

Quote:
With 240 million people - the world's fourth largest population, spread across more than 17,500 islands and a growing middle class, Indonesia ( IDX , quote ) is an aviation market that relies on aircraft to move its citizens more than most.

Consequently, it is increasingly being eyed by foreign aerospace companies seeking to sell aircraft to the numerous domestic airlines that have popped up in recent years.

Russia's Sukhoi brought its Superjet-100 to Jakarta last month , the first new Russian passenger jet since the fall of the Soviet Union more than 20 years ago, in an attempt to wow Indonesian airlines such as Kartika Airlines, Sky Aviation and Queen Air, which had expressed interest in the relatively inexpensive aircraft.

With a capacity of up to 98 passengers, the $35 million plane is cheaper than comparable aircraft manufactured by Canada's Bombardier and Brazil's Embraer SA ( ERJ , quote ).

While the Sukhoi demonstration flight tragically crashed into a volcano, killing all 45 passengers on board, (the cause of which is still being investigated) it highlighted the fierce competition to enter the Indonesian aviation market.

This month, budget carrier Lion Air, the archipelago's largest airline, ordered five Boeing 787 Dreamliners ( BA , quote ) for its newly launched premium carrier Batik Air. In April, Airbus secured a $2.5 billion contract for 11 A330-300s with national carrier Garuda Indonesia during a trade mission to Jakarta by British Prime Minister David Cameron.

"There's a major transformation going on, not just with Garuda but with the whole aviation market in Indonesia," said industry analyst Gerry Soejatman, according to AFP. "Around 60 million, or a quarter the population, travel domestically by air annually. That number could easily double if the price is right."

With Indonesian airlines like Pacific Royale Airways beginning operations earlier this month, demand for aircraft look set to increase in the future.

Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia ( AIABF , quote ) is so confident in the expanding Indonesian aviation market that its chief executive officer, Tony Fernandes, has announced he will move to Jakarta to expand regional operations from there.

"Shifting AirAsia's emphasis to a regional strategy is, we believe, not just good business, but also a move that will keep us ahead of the inevitable competition that is heading our way," Fernandes said.

Garuda named world’s best regional airline by Skytrax

Quote:
Flag carrier Garuda Indonesia was recognized as the World’s Best Regional Airline by the global airline review and ranking consultancy, Skytrax, for delivering the best service to its customers.

Garuda’s vice president for communications, Pujobroto, said Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted had presented the award directly to Garuda president director Emirsyah Satar at the Farnborough Air show.

“The award is the result of the hard work we have been doing so far. We will continue to work harder in order to enhance our services,” Pujobroto told The Jakarta Post via a text message from London.

He said the award was given to Garuda based on a customer satisfaction survey conducted by Skytrax of 18 million passengers from 100 different countries between July 2011 and June 2012.

The survey measured 38 aspects about the airline including service, convenience, on-time performance, food and beverages and safety.

Garuda beat more than 200 operators worldwide in the category.

“We also won the Best Regional Airline in Asia, encouraging us to do better in the future to keep Garuda flying higher,” he told the Post.

In March, Garuda was recognized in January as Best International Airline, according to research conducted by Australian-based company, Roy Morgan.

Roy Morgan ranked Garuda ahead of other leading airlines, such as Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Air New Zealand, with 91 percent of 3,943 respondents being “very satisfied” with the airline’s products and services. (nvn)

GARUDA Begins To Serve Balikpapan-Singapore Flight On July 27

Quote:

BALIKPAPAN: Garuda Indonesia will open new flight route from Balikpapan to Singapore on July 27, following a huge market potential and the fact that only small number of carriers serve such flight route.

Garuda flight to Singapore is as a continuation of the flight route from Makassar to Balikpapan. The national flag carrier eyes load factor in Sepinggan International Airport up to 30% from the new route.

Such load factor target will be combined with the number of passengers from Makassar, PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk Balikpapan Branch Head Setya Budhi said.

“If it can reach 60% in Makassar and we can achieve 30%, then the load factor will reach 90%,” he told Bisnis Monday (7/23/2012).

According to him, the flight from Makassar to Singapore is still not in a good condition. The load factor is only reaching to 60% in average.
