AirAsia’s Attempt to Buy Batavia Air Ends
AirAsia, the biggest budget carrier in Asia and Fersindo Nusaperkasa, its Indonesian partner, have scrapped plans to buy Indonesian carrier Batavia Air after the sides failed to reach an agreement. (...) A source at Investor Daily said AirAsia and its partner wanted to lower the selling price that had been agreed upon. Existing investor Metro Batavia refused.

Source and further reading: The Jakarta Globe
I don't understand AirAsia. A couple of months ago they come with the big press conference and say they will pay 80 million USD for Batavia, and now suddenly they wanted to lower the price.

That does not explain the cancellation of a deal they already made public with a joint press conference, including the value of the deal as well as the exact distribution of shares. Also, they already applied for (and received) the approval from the Indonesian government.

AirAsia might then be the biggest budget airline of the continent, that is in my opinion no argument in this case whatsoever. So, I am curious what is the sudden deal breaker.

i read somewhere on the net that the huge debts of Batavia Air were one of the reasons to lower the price. After the cancellation it's for sure that Batavia Air has to push back the operating costs. AirAsia and Batavia Air will still work together on some area's.

Debt-Strapped Merpati Airline to Temporarily Close 20 Routes

Quote:
National carrier Merpati Nusantara Airlines will temporarily shutter 20 routes as the debt-strapped airline attempts to shed unprofitable routes, the airline announced on Friday.

The Indonesian airline will continue to focus on “pioneer routes” to remote airports, pushing additional routes connecting small airports in eastern Indonesia, corporate secretary Herry Saptanto told the Indonesian news portal Tempo.co.

But 20 routes, including flights connecting Jakarta with Lampung, Tanjung and Bandung will temporarily cease operations, Herry said.

“The Jakarta-Bandung route has caused us losses,” Herry said.

State-owned Merpati has suffered with rampant corruption for years, posting five straight years of losses. The airline was hemorrhaging Rp 1.5 billion ($156,000) a week until June, when Merpati’s new president director Rudy Setyopurnomo took over, the company said.

Rudy has since worked to curb losses in the ailing airline.

“We [have] evaluated where the losses have come from,” Herry said. “It is from non-performing routes or poor marketing.”

The airline flew three million passengers between January and September, a 50 percent increase over the same period last year, Herry said.

Merpati plans to reopen a shuttered route between Denpasar and Sumbawa Island, in West Nusa Tenggara, he said.

“Newmont is there,” Herry said, referring to Newmont Nusa Tenggara, the local subsidary of US mining giant Newmont Mining Corp. “And there have been requests from the local administration. They find it difficult to fly to Jakarta.

“We’ve asked them to extend the runway.”

The airline was also planning additional routes linking Makassar with Benjarmasin, Timika with Jayapura and Dili with Denpasar. Flights between Manado and Papua are also in the planning stages, Herry said.

“Merpati will open new routes serving Manado-Sorong-Timika and Manado-Sorong-Manokwari-Jayapura,” Herry said.

Hajj Demand Prompts Garuda To Consider New Widebodies
By Leithen Francis; November 09, 2012
Source: Aviation Daily

Quote:
Garuda Indonesia is investigating the use of new high-capacity widebody aircraft for charters to Saudi Arabia during the Hajj religious period, but only if it also can integrate the aircraft into its scheduled services.

We are doing an evaluation to see whether it makes sense to get the Boeing 747-8 or Airbus A380,” Garuda president director, Emirsyah Satar, told Aviation week Nov. 8 on the sidelines of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines annual general meeting. He added that it is unclear if the evaluation will result in Garuda going ahead and issuing a request for proposal.

There is no time-frame for a decision, said Satar, adding that it is merely an internal study at this stage. He says if Garuda orders the A380 or 747-8, the airline needs to be confident it can operate the aircraft on scheduled routes other times of the year, when there is no Hajj.

A source from the airline in October told Aviation Week that an alternative to new widebodies would be for Garuda to keep its Boeing 747-400s, which are being replaced by Boeing 777s, and use them for charter operations like the Hajj services. But Satar dismisses this idea, noting, “We know the 747-400 is very suitable for Hajj, but what are we going to do with the aircraft for the other nine months of the year?”

The Aviation Week Intelligence Network fleet database says Garuda owns two 747-400s.

Garuda conducted 295 Hajj flights over a three-month period last year, carrying 112,500 passengers from 10 Indonesian cities, says an airline spokesman. Garuda uses aircraft on short-term wet-leases to supplement its Hajj operations.

Satar says it is getting difficult to rely on wet-leased aircraft, because there is a shortage of these during the Hajj period. Nearly every operator of Hajj flights turns to wet-leases to boost capacity. Also, the Hajj period varies from year to year. Sometimes it falls in high-season, making it even harder to source such aircraft, says Satar.
but is it easy to fill those VLA outside the Hajj season..?

Garuda to receive 24 new aircraft next year
Nurfika Osman, Jakarta | Business | Sat, November 10 2012, 11:31 AM
Source: The Jakarta Post

Quote:
National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia says it will take delivery of 24 new aircraft at a cost of US$1.57 billion next year to support expansion of its domestic and international flight service.

President director Emirsyah Satar said in Jakarta on Friday that the aircraft comprise:
- 4 Boeing B777-300ER
- 10 Boeing B737-800
- 2 Airbus A330-200
- 1 Airbus A330-300
- 7 Bombardier CRJ1000 NextGen

“They will be used to help expand both our domestic and international networks. As for the B777s, they will replace our aging B747 series,” Emirsyah said on the sidelines of the Garuda Indonesia Travel Fair 2012 in Jakarta on Friday.

Emirsyah said that Garuda planned to expand its international service to include service from Jakarta to:
- London, UK
- Brisbane, Australia
- Auckland, New Zealand
“We expect to open the new international routes by the end of 2013.”

Marketing director Elisa Lumbantoruan said that the airline would fly each of the routes four times a week by the third quarter of 2013. “In the future, as we will have more aircraft, we will increase the service from four times to seven times a week,” he said.

Garuda currently operates 96 aircraft with an average age of 6.23 years. The airline flies to more than 50 destinations domestically and internationally. Under the airline’s Quantum Leap program, it plans to increase its fleet numbers to 194 aircraft with an average age of 5 years by the end of 2015.

Emirsyah also said that Garuda’s low-cost carrier, Citilink Indonesia, would receive 10 new A320s next year that are worth about $900 million. The budget airline is expected to field a fleet of about 100 aircraft, including 50 turboprop aircraft, by the end of 2015. “We are going to announce whether we will use ATR-72s or Bombardier Q400s planes by the end of this year. We are still studying both aircraft,” Emirsyah said. The turboprop aircraft would be based in eastern Indonesia, as feeder planes for routes served by Citilink’s and Garuda’s Bombardiers.

Last month, Garuda officially put into operation a Canadian-made Bombardier aircraft at its regional hub in Makassar, South Sulawesi to help strengthen service on its domestic routes.Four out of the 18 jets that Garuda is expected to take delivery of will serve routes connecting Makassar and Ternate, North Maluku; Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi; Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara; and Surabaya, East Java. The fifth Bombardier, which the airline expects to take delivery of in December, would enter service from Garuda’s hub in Surabaya and connect the city to one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations: Denpasar, Bali.

Garuda Indonesia and KLM almost crash mid-air
According to Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant, on Tuesday 13 November two passenger airplanes of KLM and Garuda approached eachother at 625 metres altitude, above the town of Uitgeest near Amsterdam. De planes were only seperated 1 km or 15 seconds, when they saw eachother and did an avoidance maneuver.

They were an Airbus 330-200 of Garuda Indonesia, and a Boeing 737-800 of KLM. An investigation to the incident has started, but the newspaper suggests that the KLM plane was on its usual route to the Polderbaan (runway 18R - 36L). The Garuda plane should have gone to the Zwanenburgbaan (runway 18C - 36C), and the route to that runway is 300 metres higher.

The maximum capacity of the two planes combined is up to 500 passengers. In case of a mid-air collission, there is virtually no chance of survivors.

The sensational news above is currently put in perspective, and many experts say that "almost crash", as many media said, is exaggerated. Probably the Garuda plane has exceeded the minimum seperation distance, and therefore a formal investigation is started, but also Schiphol air traffic control (Amsterdam Airport) says there is no reason to think it was almost a crash.

Garuda Indonesia has the following official statement (translated from Dutch):

Quote:
Through several media the news reached us of a seemingly abnormal situation during the landing of our flight on 13 November 2012. Garuda Indonesia did not receive a single official notification of this event. Neither from ATC Schiphol, nor through safety systems such as TCAS and ATC. Therefore, we are surprised by the coverage of this alleged incident.

(...)Garuda Indonesia looks forward to the results of the investigation.

Mandala to fly higher next year with 15 aircraft

Quote:
Privately owned Mandala Airlines is gearing up to increase its market share in the country’s growing low-cost carrier industry by putting into operation up to 15 Airbus 320s next year.

Mandala’s commercial director, Brata Rafly, said the company would use the new aircraft to expand the airline’s domestic network, especially from cities in Java and Sumatra, as well as its international network.

“The healthy economy has led to continued growth in Indonesia’s aviation market, particularly in the western part of our country,” Brata said at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on the sidelines of the fifth A-320 delivery ceremony on Monday.

“After recently connecting Padang [West Sumatra capital] to Jakarta and Singapore, we plan to connect more emerging cities in Sumatra, such as Pekanbaru [in Riau] to the capital city and Singapore in 2013.”

On Dec. 1, Mandala opened four new routes linking the capital cities of West Sumatra and Bali with major cities in Indonesia and Singapore. The routes are: Padang–Jakarta, Padang–Singapore, Denpasar–Surabaya, and Denpasar–Singapore.

Since the first day the routes were introduced, the airline has seen increasing demand from customers, particularly with the approach of the Christmas and New Year holidays, he said.

“As a long-time player in the industry, Mandala has its own loyal customers who regularly fly with the airline. Thus, we are committed to more aggressive business expansion in the coming years to better serve them,” he continued.

The airline is partly owned by Singapore-based Tiger Airways; Brata said the association with Tiger would benefit Mandala’s business expansion. Tiger has 45 destinations across 14 countries and territories in Asia Pacific, from Singapore to
Australia.

Mandala and Tiger plan to implement joint code sharing to ease connectivity between the two airlines. Mandala customers can fly to Tiger destinations, like India, with ease by taking off on a Mandala flight.

He also said that the airline planned to have 25 aircraft in operation by the end of 2015 to accommodate surging demand from both leisure and business travelers.

In addition, Mandala will commence multi-leg flights starting on Jan. 4 with its fifth A-320 connecting Surabaya, East Java with Jakarta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

He said the aircraft would fly from Jakarta to Surabaya and then continue on to Singapore. Before continuing on the third leg to the Malaysian capital, the aircraft would first return to Surabaya.

From Kuala Lumpur, the A-320 would fly to Surabaya and then come back to Jakarta, he explained.

Mandala Airlines president commissioner Djusman Syafii Jamal, also a former transportation minister, said the airline expected to get more support from state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II in obtaining better air slots.

Currently, Mandala connects Jakarta with Medan, Padang, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Bangkok. It also links Medan, Padang and Denpasar to Singapore.

Mandala is owned by the Saratoga Group and Tiger Airways, which hold 51.3 percent and 33 percent, respectively, of the airline’s shares. The remaining 15.7 percent is held by previous shareholders and creditors of Mandala.
