Here in Singapore we have the ultimate architectural and historical disaster:

This is "The Cathay Building". What you see at the front is not a cheap add-on decoration. It's a historical monument, with the status of National Monument, the highest "honour" for preserved buildings.

It's the ultimate joke.



Cathay Building was built in 1939 as a cinema with a tower. The tower was the first skyscraper in Singapore and the tallest building in the region. The tower was an office and hotel. Then in the 1970s, it was reclad.



Then in 2000, the cinema and tower was abandoned. Plans were announced to demolished it. So a "compromise" was made between the developer and the authorities, which the facade of the cinema was preserved. The tower and cinema was demolished in 2003/4.

There is very little old in Singapore... It's obviously better than in Hong Kong for example but that's not really an achievement.

If we really want to see good examples of good historical preservation blended into modern society, we need to go to Europe.
