I think the same, I come here everyday expecting to find news about indian railways and it's the same over and over again. I mean, it's not a problem but this thread is becoming kinda repetitive.

Hi All ! I'm Akilesh. Been an avid Rail Enthusiast !
I have a nagging query on why all the recent WAP-4's are sporting a top-mounted Headlamp rather than the old mid-mounted one ? The old one was looking cool.
Even the new gen WAP-5,7,9's are sporting a mid-mounted lamp

On the contrary, a lot of new things are still happening, just that Indian forumers don't feel the urge to post here since we already have a very well organised 'Railways and Transportation' sub-section in our Indian section. Then the annexation of this thread by the youtubers is also another reason why some forumers stopped posting here.

2013 Schematic Map (courtesy planemad) of India's operational Railway Network shown below.

However, this map doesn't capture railway developments in 2014 and 2015, such as the Kashmir Railway, the completion of electrification of the 161 km rail route from Wadi Station (Karnataka state) to Lingampally Station (Hyderabad metropolis in Telangana state) in south-central India etc.
This map still shows electrification pending.
reference.

This map also shows a bit more detail of the huge commuter railway networks in India's four largest metropolitan areas.

The Railways in India needs massive infrastructure investments for more safety, higher speed, profitability and better quality, but here are some updates since the last time this thread was updated-

(1) Dynamic pricing introduced on air-conditioned trains between Delhi and Mumbai.

reference2

(2) Fire-retardant fabric for bedrolls introduced for safety in case of a fire.

(3) Conversion completed of following commuter rail lines to 25000 Volt AC Traction from 1500 Volt DC in Central Railway:
LTT station to Thane station via 5th & 6th lines, Thane - Kalyan, Vasai - Diva, Panvel - Karjat, lgatpuri - Kasara & Pune – Kalyan station.

(4) Heritage look being given to Scindia State Railway train before operation:

(5) Indian Railways, private Indian car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki flag off flexi deck auto-wagon rake
source
Quote:
Car manufacturers have long been pushing for better methods to transport their cars by rail. Now Indian Railways and Maruti Suzuki flagged off a new high-capacity railway rake in Gurgaon on Wednesday.
Named 'Flexi deck auto-wagon rake', it brings the advantages of higher capacity, flexibility, faster speed and environment friendliness to rail transportation of cars.

The flexi deck auto-wagon rake, designed by Indian Railway's Research Design and Standards Organization, has 20% additional capacity (318 cars) as compared to the current twin-decker rakes (265 cars), used for rail transportation.

The new rake, with its height adjustable middle-deck, is highly flexible and can transport vehicles of multiple dimensions.
Transporting cars by new flexi deck auto-wagon rake will lead to reduction in carbon emission making it more environment friendly.

The first flexi deck auto-wagon rake consisting of 27 wagons chugged off to Nidavanda near Bangalore from Gurgaon carrying a mixed load of Maruti Suzuki cars including Swift, Dzire, Alto, Wagon R and Omni.

Maruti Suzuki is India's first automobile company to procure flexi deck auto-wagon rakes. It has initially procured three such rakes of 27 wagons each. These rakes will be primarily deployed in the high-volume west and south India destinations.

The company will dispatch cars through railways to several destinations like Nagpur, Siliguri, Mumbai, Pune, Mundra, Kolkata etc. Maruti Suzuki will order more rakes to meet its growing transportation requirement.

Initially, Maruti Suzuki has developed a railway station at Nidavanda, near Bangalore. The Nidavanda station has a capacity to handle nearly 300 vehicles right now.
As Maruti Suzuki has big volumes for South India destinations, Bangalore will be used as a feeder point for dealer network.

Maruti Suzuki has been using rail transportation mode for over two decades.
In 2008, it joined hands with Indian railways and developed double-deck container trains to enhance the load carrying capacity.
These continue to be used by the company mainly for the export vehicles from its' manufacturing plants in Haryana to Mundra Port.

Just an experimentation to provide better illumination of the tracks. Not that sensible though since it doesn't make any difference.

Indian Railways budget launches five-year plan
26 Feb 2015

Suresh Prabhu presented the railway budget to parliament on February 26

INDIA: The 2015-16 railways budget should be seen as the beginning of a Rs8 560bn five-year action plan to transform the network, Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu said when he presented the budget to parliament on February 26.

This year’s budget forms part of a ‘trilogy’ of documents being produced by the government, along with a white paper and a ‘Vision 2030’ document which is to be released later this year.

Prabhu set out four goals for IR: sustainable and measurable improvement in customer experience; improved safety; substantial expansion of passenger and freight capacity; and becoming financially self-sustainable

That's a good move to work on increasing the speed of passenger trains in specific corridors.
But, is it possible to run trains @ 160-200 Km/h with current density of traffic ?

Safety standards are first and foremost.

Before modernization and betterment, India must think about how to curail numberous train accidents resulting in massive fatality.

China now has 6x the railway network India has. Much of this was built in last 20 years. And china has high "safety" standards.

Something, India needs to learn from.

India aims to invest $137 billion in railways in next 5 years

Quote:
(Reuters) - The government unveiled plans on Thursday to invest $137 billion in its decrepit rail network over the next five years, heralding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's aggressive approach to building infrastructure needed to unlock faster economic growth.

Over the next year, India will increase investment by about a half to 1 trillion rupees ($16.15 billion) including funds raised by market borrowing.

To meet the five year target, investment will have to speed up even more after that, leaving economists questioning where the money would come from as the government has to rein in its fiscal deficit.

Presenting the rail budget two days before the Union Budget - also expected to hike infrastructure spending - Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu shied away from hiking passenger fares to finance the upgrades, but raised freight rates.

He said the budget "set the direction.....
