Not on Look Leeds it won't..

No matter how much you love the ski villiage you have to remember it has a minority interest, and when it was unique and the biggest in UK we got lots of extra visitors, but now it isn't unique and it would be wrong to think it could ever have the pull it did 20 years ago.

Just been on Radio Sheffield that a company called Pullen (Sp?) have agreed terms with the administrators to buy the thing. Right now that's all they're saying.

Excellent! Lets hope some development is in the works as part of the deal. It'll save me driving to castleford

70 'ski' jobs saved

By Fiona Firth
SEVENTY jobs at troubled Sheffield Ski Village have been saved after the business was bought by a city-based developer.
Administrators Graham Newton and Toby Underwood, from BDO Stoy Hayward, were called in after the Parkwood Springs attraction hit financial problems towards the end of May when owner Speedome ran out of time to put together its own rescue package.
They have now sold the business to Broomhall-based Pullan Developments (Selby).
The firm is best known for its Pullan Homes operation, a family-owned housing development company, which has built around 600 new houses in South Yorkshire and Humber-side since it was founded in 1983.
Graham Newton, BDO Stoy Hayward business restructuring partner, said: "Sheffield Ski Village is a well known attraction and we are delighted to have secured its future.
"Our thanks go to all the staff and Sheffield Council who
supported us during the last few weeks.
"The going concern sale is great news for South Yorkshire as it protects 70 jobs and the attraction's future."
Sheffield Ski Village's fortunes took a turn for the worse after the Xscape indoor ski centre at Castleford – which has real snow – opened in November 2003.
"The problem is that technology has moved on and people now prefer real snow to the artificial surface we currently have," says John Fleetham, who started the ski village 18 years ago.
Attempts to save it with an £80 million investment programme which would have created a 'Snow Mountain' and business park on its doorstep were dashed when Sheffield Council rejected a plan by development partner Menta Regeneration to build 550 new homes on the site of the former UCAR factory at Beeley Wood, which was an integral part of the scheme. In January the village was put up for sale for £1.
finally some good news

I still hope that a redevelopment can be started as its still only a dry ski slope. If the indoor dome did go ahead the size of the area available would dwarf the xscape one in castleford.

Yeah, if it stays the same it'll just end up with the same financial problems again. They really need the 'Snow Mountain' to attract people again.

A word of caution might be in order. Looking at their website, it seems they pride themselves on buying land on the cheap then building houses on it and passing the savings onto their customers. If they did get the ski village for £1, did they do it to save the operation or was it done to get their hands on the cheap land? If the latter, only time will tell how safe the village is long-term.

I'm not sure if you can even build houses on it really. The council don't want housing on the site as it'll detract from their own housing schemes.

Can't be cheap or easy to build houses on a slope like that either.

Mind you, the Council do have a record of selling things off for a quid and then granting planning permission for bland structures like business parks...

Hmm. Shame. Atleast it sounds like they've got a sound business plan.

There is a plan to build a new housing estate (mainly private but with 15% affordable homes) alongside Pitsmoor Road, going from Pye Bank road down to the new IRR.

Yes it does sound like they have a plan, one that involves running down the Ski Village to eventually build what THEY want there.

Is he serious? I do a bit of snowboarding and I know many others boarders and skiers, all of them hate the dry slope in comparison to Excape. There is no niche for this now!

Ok, I take that back. As a snowboarder myself, I hate the dry slope.

Hi Pullanpower. Nice to hear he's got plans for it then. Is the Penguin thing that little kids section? Look forward to seeing what gets done.
