Not really a place for expanding retail and street-life onto the surrounding streets. In fact, the neighborhood wouldn't permit it. Enclosed and self-contained parking was the only way to keep the 'hood quiet and handle the additional flood of cars.

The mall was neither here nor there for its time. Of course, opening it up to the street is the fashion now, but it's hard to blame someone 30 years ago for not doing it.

Contrast this to Beverly Center, which is not surrouned by sfh's and had an enormous area to work with, but still went self-contained.

I visted WP today. I was pleased that some of the orginal details are still there such as the elevator, including the elevator on the roof, and ther are also some orginal lamps on the roof. It could get back more of the orginal feel if they just repainted it so its not just all white and put in new floors.

I am not a fan of the Beverly Center at all. It has that famous LA fortress type style. Most if not all the sidewalks surrounding the mall have no streetlife. Why even put an enclosed mall in the middle of a densely populated area that's 90% sunshine thruout the year. Its hideous imho.
Westside Pavillion is just awful. They had every opportunity to make Pico have streetlife but again a giant lifeless wall of nothing. Even Nordstrom and Macy's sealed off their entrances on Pico.

You make a great point. BC is completely ugly and needs to be torn down and opened up.

Dongguan, China has the largest mall in the world in terms of area (but it's completely empty). Shiraz, Iran has the largest according to the number of stores.

Why is it that I find most malls less exciting to go to when Borders, Barnes & Noble or any record shops closed down.

Though there are still places with Barnes & Noble like The Grove.

If there is one mall that has gotten a major facelift, that would be Santa Monica Place.

A new anchor tenant, parking structure and two-story mall wing are in store for Torrance's giant, but outdated Del Amo Fashion Center.

The plans were contained in a "minor modification permit" of a 15-year-old previously approved redevelopment scheme. Community Development Director Jeff Gibson signed off on the new permit Oct. 31.

His administrative approval means the updated plan requires no additional scrutiny by the Planning Commission or a public hearing before construction can begin. Gibson determined the plans for the mall were not significantly different from previous approved proposals and, therefore, no review was necessary.

No timetable for the mall revamping was given, but the existing entitlements for redevelopment of the property expire in May 2013.
