It is a huge shame, seeing what the building should have looked like and what they are going to end up with are at different ends of the scale!

The spire was economically useless. Only to the design. Moscow is not Dubai or Doha. And that`s a good thing. The high-rise complex looks spiffy even without an spire. The spire was megalomania.

Most beautiful details and features in architecture are economically useless but it should not be an excuse to remove them. The removal of these details has transformed the building from an icon to a regular office block.

The most well loved historic structures were pure megalomania.

No, that is a mistake. There were bodies without function only in churches and town halls.
And craft work used to be cheap.

Federation Towers are commercial buildings and must be based on the market. A more than 500m high spire costs vast sums of money and must be refinanced by the rental income.

It was a turbo lift to the floors where the spire was attached to buildings.

The only truly secure system is one that is powered off, cast in a block of concrete and sealed in a lead-lined room with armed guards - and even then I have my doubts. Gene Spafford.

If people only went with what was only economically "useful", all new buildings that were built would only be boxes.

One of the main problem with spire - lifts. Very little amount of space inside spire + Russian climat + unstable construction ( spire will be always moving, during the wind ). Lifts for this spire - not invented yet.

I love the debates between economy and design. Never saw a winner yet.

As long as they don't go bankrupt, who cares if they had put the spire on?
