Hmm are you aware The Australia Ballet is Melbourne based?

Have you heard of Melbourne's NGV Winter Masterpieces?

This year its the Guggenheim collections:
""This is the first time ever that the Guggenheim collections have been seen in Melbourne. This exhibition is exclusive to the National Gallery of Victoria and will not travel to any other Australian city, or anywhere else in the world."

Last year it was Picasso.

The year before it was the Dutch Masters from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which featured works by Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Pieter de Hooch and Jan Steen. Works which never usually leave the museum in Amsterdam...

The year before that was The Impressionists: Masterpieces from the Musée d'Orsay....It featured artists including Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Melbourne got all of these while being the same distance from New York, Paris and Amsterdam as Sydney....

Edit: SOrry for going off topic, but that really pissed me off...

Forget the 200m Pompidou. They'll go for the most conservative design or ask the most interestingly designed to be 'dumbed down'.

the chosen design isnt allowed to be 'dumbed" down. It has to be built as per submission.

Is there any way you can post the designs? WHat was the shortest design?

Thanks Cul. By the way, is 'richard someone from the UK' meant to be Richard Rogers (the designer of Pompidou and Lloyds )? That would be awesome! Although I'm afraid Muse's assumptions above would be correct in that they'll go a conservative option, designwise and heightwise.

If Rogers is one of the architects that would be pretty awesome. 122 Leadenhall in London's pretty schmick looking:

122 Leadenhall would be perfect on 8-12 Chifley Square. The trophy shelf currently contains one Renzo Piano, a Fosters (2!) and I think a Rogers would look good next to them. I'll take it.

Sorry Cul, just to be absolutely certain, is one of the architect submissions from Richard Rogers?

Yes, Wowsim, I am fully aware of the things you mention, and I am happy to acknowledge that both Melbourne and Canberra have better Art Galleries/ Art Museums than Sydney, but if you put love of Melbourne aside - I like it, too, especially in Autumn - but the actual SUBJECT under discussion was Sydney V Overseas Cities and that's what I dealt with. I also noted that I was trying to keep it brief.
You might find the politics behind the locating of some of those shows/ exhibitions you mentioned 'interesting' if not flattering to the character of some of those involved.
Yes, the Australian Ballet is based in Melbourne, but it is to Sydney that international audiences come to see it more often than not and some thousands of richer-than-me Sydney-siders managed to get themselves off to the SOH when it is on in Sydney. I think that to come to Oz and to see only Sydney is foolish when Melbourne has so much to offer and isn't so far away, but it's not up to me.
It's not about Sydney V Melbourne, but counteracting the perennial dumping on Sydney (and by extension, Aust) as a cultural desert which I call it 'poseur ennui'. With a few notable exceptions, Sydney is much better than most of the overseas cities I have experienced, but it can not be London or New York or Paris.
So, stop being pissed off as it was not the point; aim your ire at the cultural cringers. Now, as you said, let's get back to the topic of this thread.

...ok, maybe not dumbed down as such, but surely the client can ask for changes a tad....or is it in the competition briefs, contracts etc that the winning design must come 'as is'?

...lol about being coy about 'Richard somebody-or-other'?

122 Leadenhall is a great tower, but Sydney has too many scrapers with sloped roofs. We need diversity.

I'm hopeful that the winning design is curved as Cul mentioned that some proposals have.

But 122 Leadenhall doesn't have a sloped roof, it has a sloped facade.

the whole of the Chifley Square area has curved elements in each bldg. the Qantas bldg,Sheraton hotel,Chifley tower podium, so it seems natural that this new project should have curved features. Im guessing at this early stage it will be a curved design with flat roof approx 130m high.

Which design was better (without giving too much away)? Wardle's or Rogers'? I ask because I love the work of both and would love to see Rogers' do a tower in Oz but at the same time would love to see it go to a local firm, although Wardle already won the Westfield job I guess.

Too many curves, exactly!

We need blockiness and angles or this part of town will start to look ridiculous.
