UGH!!!!
It looks like it's hanging its head in shame after been sent away from the cluster by the bigger kids.

I really dislike this one too.

Really sad to see the renders for this tower
It seems like this single tower can devaluate the whole skyline.
What are the chances of it being built (sorry if this has been asked before)?

Probably around 99%. The developer is the largest property company in Europe.

Give it 20 years and we'll be spitting at it and holding our noses as we go past it.

Latest news:-

The project has been called in by the Secretary of State. This means it faces a public inquiry, and could possibly be cancelled.

Can't they just build it in a 200m hole under the ground? And then seal the hole? What are the chances of this happening instead?

From Property Week:

‘Walkie-Talkie’ put on hold

Land Securities’ proposed development of the ‘Walkie-Talkie’ at 20 Fenchurch Street in the City has been put on hold after the government decided to call in the scheme, it emerged this afternoon.

23.11.2006

By Sinead Cruise

Land Securities announced today it had received notification from the Government Office for London of The Secretary of State to call-in its planning application for the 850,000 sq ft (78,966 sq m) Rafael Vinoly-designed building. The company will be making representations on the Secretary of State’s decision.

The decision to call in the planning application is the second setback for the ambitious scheme. Land Securities was forced to scrap original designs for the building in July after it was decided that the 45-storey tower would obstruct views of St Paul’s Cathedral. It agreed to reduce the height of the building by 65ft and the scheme finally won planning consent from the Corporation of London in September.

Buildings should soar, be stepped up or rise to a pinnacle, and have good manners...

Look at chrysler and Empire state !! Why cant we have buildings that elegantly puncture the skyline !!!!!!!!

Although I'm glad this particular tower has been called in, from what's being said in the UK forum it could greatly harm skyscraper developments in London for the long term. With such a complicated planning process, and so many hurdles to jump over, developers could be scared away from proposing anything tall in the City. Tall buildings could be seen as too risky and expensive.

Ruth Kelly is the Secretary of State who made this decision. She recently took over from John Prescott, and in fact, only last week she blocked the tallest ever proposal in Liverpool -

Perhaps is the Walkie Talkie more suitable for Canary Wharf?
