Albuquerque Rail Yards Hosts Open House and Tours

The city of Albuquerque announced that today it’s inviting the public to an open house of the historical rail yard site south of downtown.

For the first time since purchasing the property in 2007, the City of Albuquerque will be inviting the public onto the property this Saturday, December 1, as part of the process to develop a master plan for the site

An open house for the public to review and comment on redevelopment concepts and proposals will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in one of the historic structures on the site, which is located at 1100 2nd Street, SW, at 2nd St. and Pacific Ave. All are welcome to attend. Tours of the site are being offered at 11 a.m. and noon; spaces for the tours are limited and can be reserved by calling (505) 924-3897.

“We’ve been working to find ways to increase safe access to the site so the public can gain an appreciation of its historic value and economic development potential,” says Mayor Richard J. Berry. He has been championing an interim use proposal to partially restore one of the buildings on the site so that it can be used for public events, such as a farmer’s market. “The Open House and tours this Saturday are a great chance for people to get a sneak peek of this one-of-a-kind site and project.”

The City and selected Master Developer, Samitaur Constructs, have been holding public input meetings and working to develop a Master Plan for the site since August. City Councilor Isaac Benton, who led the effort to acquire the site, says the Open House and tours represent an important opportunity for the public to get involved in the planning process, which will establish the parameters for what happens with the site in the future.

Well it looks like they finally started the aprtments in the old Federal buliding at 5th and Gold. Looks like they are working on the first four floors.

Just found out there is some rumors that Bernalillo County maybe trying to buy the Bank of the West building on 5th and Marquette again. This building is 50% vacant as it stands now so very good news.




This catwalk to the existing government center is big selling point for them I believe.

Big ABQ Uptown expansion in works

Simon Property Group has major expansion plans for its high-profile ABQ Uptown shopping center in Albuquerque.
“We are absolutely pursuing the expansion of ABQ Uptown. It will be at least 40,000 square feet of additional space, but we are just in the beginning stages and it could be more. The number of tenants and the type of parking structure are still to be determined,” said Jeremy Strife, the general manager for Simon’s shopping centers in Albuquerque, which include ABQ Uptown and Cottonwood Mall.

This should be interesting... The retail space in Uptown is changing quick!

I didn't think there was any land left. There is a small parcel behind the new Target. Any Idea where they plan to build?

UNM moving forward with Lobo Village plan



The University of New Mexico is taking a big step forward with its plans for a retail shop and restaurant development next door to the UNM Arena and the Lobo Village student apartments on the south campus complex.

The UNM Board of Regents approved a "master development agreement" Thursday that paves the way for a company called Fairmount Properties to start recruiting businesses for the project,.

Got space? You bet. There's plenty of it along Cesar Chavez Avenue, right beside Lobo Village, where 900 students live and commute to the main campus by shuttle bus. It's just a stone's throw from the Pit, where thousands howl for the Lobos. How could restaurants and retail shops fail here?

"It's really convenient," said student Madison Olguin, who lives in Lobo Village. "It's right by the Pit, it's right by all the Lobo athletics so everyone lives here, the students, so I think it's a good thing because we could all just go walk to the food or walk to the grocery store."

Student Ismael Giab also lives in Lobo Village.

"I think it's a great idea because everything is pretty far from here, so if we can have a place, like a cafeteria where we can eat, or something like this, I'm pretty sure it's a good idea," Giab said.

"Yeah, it would be cool for the people that live around here," said student David Romero. "More options, more places to eat. I think that would be all right for them."

The Regents' action will eventually turn the project over to Fairmount, a Cleveland-based company that specializes in developing commercial zones like this one for universities across the nation.

Things are finally moving now. We have a new plan by a Portland developer for the site at 10th and Central (ex Silver Moon lodge) which will be 4 floors of 150 apartments. Lobo Village retail development moving forward with a Cleveland-based developer, and the fancy schmancy Santa Monica apartments are in full swing in the Far North. ABQ may actually surpass Las Cruces in new developments this coming year!

as for ABQ Uptown the expansion is happening on the East Parking lot. That's why parking needs to be addressed.

I know I saw this in the Commission Meeting tonight. It looks like an exciting year coming up. especially Down Town by the end of the year these projects will hopefully either be complete or well on their way:

Fourth Street Mall redo
Convention Center Facelift
512 Gold Federal Building Apartment conversion
The Silver Moon Lodge Apartments
Casitas De Colores
and hopefully the rumored sale of the Bank of the West Building eating up lots of vacant office space and phasing out the existing leases making current tenants find and fill more office space most likely down town.

Looks like a lot of really exciting stuff going on in my hometown. My wife and I are planning on heading down over Christmas break (she's a teacher) to visit family in ABQ. What are some great places that we can't miss while we're there? I was in ABQ for my dad's funeral in 2007, but haven't lived there since the 80's.

Well since you are coming around Christmas I would suggest going to the river of lights at the Botanicle Gardens. Also check out Old Town, they have cool stuff going on there this time of year. Try strolling in Nob Hill too. Also, its cold now but don't forget to do the Tram; the views are increadible. That's my two cents.

The luminaria tour on Christmas eve near Old Town is a must. You can take a tour bus for a few bucks or drive through for free. Of course the tram is running, and you can take in dinner and the sights at the top at the High Finance restaurant. The Rail Runner to Santa Fe makes for a fun day, as you'll find plenty of eateries, shops and galleries once in Santa Fe. Have fun!
