Eubank is a very long street! And the renovation of the entire inner-city has been spectacular! Even up east of Carlisle...we are starting to see more and more. Albuquerque on a whole has a much bigger city "feel" than alot of other towns...
Nightlife rocks in Albuquerque too! Excellent museums, cultural facillities, and cute neighborhods with excellent shopping and eating.

i visited ABQ last summer and was quite impressed.
It is a small city; not a "major city", and it has its good points and bad just like any city of any size. Overall, I like it very much. and i give them major props for getting their commuter rail system on board. |

ABQ Rant
I lived in the Albuquerque bedroom community of Rio Rancho, NM for 18 years and I feel inclined to chime in here (I know I am a little late and am resurrecting a "dead" post, but...). I have a difficult time comparing ABQ to any other city in America, or in the world for that matter. Not that I have seen a great deal of cities in my time, but ABQ's charm lies within its uniqueness and for that reason alone I find it a desirable place to reside. True, a paucity of noteworthy high rises exists, and this saddens me, but as New Mexicans, we pride ourselves on our vistas, or views. As long as I can remember every time a proposal sprouts for a 10+ story building, it is almost immediately shut down by some council vote or neighborhood complaint. The residents do not want their view of the majestic Sandia Mountains to be spoiled, and who can blame them. New Mexico never has (and never will) have any major man-made attractions, so we must rely on the natural beauty of the land to stimulate tourism etc. So, as a result, ABQ lacks the dense infrastructure and thus, an impressive or even quasi-impressive skyline. The lure of the city for me, though, is its individualism (as stated previously) and the distinct neighborhoods it possess. AZian, who posted the ignorant comments about ABQ, seems to be mistaking the colorful and rich neighborhoods of the South Valley as a Slum-Ridden Dump. I happen to commute from a suburb to this “squalid” area and have nothing but positive things to say about it. Now true, crime (violent and property) is a scourge for ABQ, but it’s on the decline and a proactive and visionary mayor is in office with grand ideas for the city. Sprawl is becoming a bit of a problem for ABQ and its neighboring communities, but nothing even close to Phoenix or LV (to name a few). Personally, I think ABQ metro area could use a few hundred thousand more residents to draw more attractions (like a decent theme park) as well as a “big-city” feel without the negative aspects of one. I get the feeling that people visit the middle Rio Grande Valley and leave with a negative impression of the area and after recently touring the country I can sort of see why some people feel that. ABQ is stuck in confused state where it can’t decide whether or not it wants to be a charming “little” city like Tulsa, Co. Springs, Des Moines, or if it wants to explode and truly attain “big” (not major) city status like Austin is rapidly becoming. All I can say to them is that ABQ’s growth is positive, and the future prospects are exciting. Hopefully this frighteningly long (and my first) post gets read and generates a little discussion, but at least my thoughts and opinions are out there.

Stew, I too believe Albuquerque/Rio Rancho Metro is soon to be the next great Southwest City. Just this past week we finally launched the Rail Runner commuter train, and they have already added one passenger car in each direction to handle the demand. With Mesa Del Sol 13,000 acres being developed by Forest City who handled the redevelopment of Stapelton Airport in Denver, things could not look brighter. ABQ Uptown Lifestyle center will be opening Phase 1 (retail) in November with many new upscale retailers new to our state (Apple, BCBG, Pottery Barn). When retail starts pouring in like what is currently happening you can bet Albuquerque has landed on the national radar!! And lets not forget that Culver City Studios and Lionsgate are both building state of the art film studios here to handle the fledging film business here.

I love the old adobes. Albuquerque has a very long history, more than most cities in the states. I'll be there and Santa Fe in a couple weeks.

I would love to see pictures of Albuquerque's older residential neighborhoods. Please post if you have them.

NM's most modern city = Albuquerque, the opposite side of Santa Fé.

I grew up in ABQ and have a bit of family still there though most has moved away. I am not as anti-ABQ as I once was but I won't be returning any time soon either. Bad memories have ruined me for the place.
That said, ABQ is superior to both Colorado Springs and Phoenix in many ways and isn't anywhere near as bland as either. Not that each city doesn't have it's good points...I have family in all three. Albuquerque has the best food in the world, though. My soul's food is found in that city and nowhere else. Simply cannot be beat. I could die happy after a meal at Sadie's and could eat Ortega's every day of the week...and pretty much did when my Mom lived across the street. Really, there are many great restaurants in ABQ, these are just two of my favs. |

NickABQ - Where did you hear of this proposed skyscraper? I haven't seen anything regarding this development. The only two I know of are the new Downtown Arena with a 420 room Westin Hotel attached and a retail project. The other is a proposed 27 Story tower at Jefferson and I-25.

Hmm...and where on Gold Ave would that fit? Most of that street is full unless they demo'd the ugly yellow thing between 5th and 6th. 35 - 55 stories? That's a big range...about 400' to 700'. The difference alone would be our second tallest!

I'm guessing the rumor of a 35-55 story bldg posted by NickABQ is just that a rumor (no offense to Nick)! I'm pretty sure something would have been mentioned in one of the many media outlets regarding a building that size in ABQ.
I would love to see a new skyscraper Downtown, but I just don't think this will be a reality any time soon. Hopefully the proposed 27 story tower will be built, however, I still wish it would be built Downtown rather than I-25 & Jefferson! But I'll take a new tallest any day of the week!

Whoa guys! No need to get all in a tizzy. It's not a rumour. Its a development by Blue Dot Corporation.
@ABQ Turkey- The ugly yellow thing youre talking about is here to stay (its a federal Building). It fits on the north side of Gold between 6th and 7th.......the developer is going to bulldoze a small parking garage, Valiant Printing Building and use the rest of the parking lot behind the El Rey (former site of a now gone Synagogue). Blue Dot has bought all of the lots. Initially, it was to be 35 stories but recently the developer has put in a request to the city to raise the height by 10-15 floors due to additional demand. @ everyone, the 27 story tower is still in the approval process. It looks like the board will pass it without a doubt, keep our fingers crossed. It is a Chant development, and the site has been cleared. A good friend of mine and my neighbor is the consultant for Blue Dot, and luckily he has a lot of insider scoop on new developments going on! Ironically, the Blue Dot development isnt necessarily being kept under wraps....I guess it just hasnt gotten out yet. The name of the development is Packerd Place. Blue Dot Corporation is also building the Anasazi Tower development at 6th and Central. A preliminary height has also been released by the contractor, 180 feet. not so tall, but taller than the Banque Lofts, and pretty lofty considering there will only be 10 above ground floors. Packerd Place is supposed to be the new tallest building in New Mexico. It actually has a set of twin towers with a skybridge connecting them. Apparently over 80 shops, ann indoor driving range, offices and lofts starting from $200,000. i have seen the rendering on their website, but I have also seen the renderings and illustrations elsewhere......they look kickass. Construction for Anasazi is supposed to be completed by October, and Packerd Place is supposed to break ground in December of this year. and lastly....don't shoot the messenger guys..... |
