Batasia Loop (section only), Darjeeling
The Batasia loop is considered an engineering marvel. However I have not found a "new" photo of the whole loop yet (most photos are old). This pic is new and although it covers only a section, it is fantastic!

There is a narrow gauge "toy train" that runs from the plains to the town of Darjeeling (yes, where the famous tea comes from) in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains, in the northen part of the state of West Bengal, in India. In 1999, UNESCO declared the Toy Train and its tracks a "World Heritage Site." After a ride aboard the Toy Train in 1895, Mark Twain is said to have remarked, "The most enjoyable day I've spent on earth is of mixed ecstacy of deadly fright and unimaginable joy." It's a 80 km (50 mile) ride through some of the prettiest landscapes in India -- a journey that takes about 7 hours, and climbs from the plains to an altitude 6,800 ft. In one section of the journey, the train climbs almost a 1,000 feet in a matter of minutes at this "Batasia Loop," where the tracks spiral around over itself through a tunnel and over a hilltop. Kanchenjungha, the mountain in the background, looks close. But, it is about 75 kms. (47 miles) away as the crow flies!

Nice find cncity! Do they still run those? I rode the Black Diamond Express from Howrah to Durgapur once ( a long time back). The double decker train was kind of funny.

Yes they still run the double decker train. It takes about 2 hours from Pune to daund. The double decker is more fun as the it has a huge seating capacity and at the ends the seats are at a height (like an umpire's chair in a tennis match ).

This pic is veryyyyy old. The double deckers now used are Blue coloured with seats similar to the seats in a regular long distance trains ( blue seats )

This double decker train seems to have the same height as the normal compartment. So is it more cramped than the normal one? I remember travelling in one in Gujarat when I was like 2 or 3, it was kinda cool.

Why not use double decker trains in Mumbai locals like the Paris RER or Ontario GO trains? So instead of the trains waiting 30 seconds, they could wait a minute or two.

Here is a picture of GO train

Wouldn't it be awesome to have these in India .
