Portsmouth and Spinnakertower UK

Portsmouth is the largest naval base in Europe and home to the royal navy. It is located on the south coast of England and held the spectacular Trafalgar celebrations last summer with the largest fireworks display in Europe ever. Portsmouth has had a bad reputation like all british cities, but there is alot of beauty there and development. These are some pictures i took of portsmouth a few months ago, the day after the tower opened.

This is Guildhall square, and acts as a center for the city

just down the road there is Theater royal

Some nice buildings on the way to the sea

The museum

Old portsmouth
The Cathedral

Entrance to the harbour

Ferry terminal

Old bombed church (a king got married here)

Architecture on the sea front

Victoria park and surrounding buildings

The Admiralty

The hard and HMS Warrior

Spinnaker Tower seen from the Hard

Gunwarf Quays (shopping and entertainment complex)

Spinnaker tower

Scarry but fun

One of the best cities in the UK. I love it! On a hot summer day - it's magic. Fantastic developments and lots more potential.

Go Portsmouth.

Nice photos. Am I right in thinking that the city is reorienting around the port (with Gunwharf Quays and Spinnaker, and all the new highrises around it), and less from the central part of the city?

I don't know much at all about Portsmouth.

Some great buildings there!

I dont think the city is re orientating around Gunwarf Quays, but is becoming a city of different areas. Gunwarf has reached its maximum size in terms of shops and restaurants, so the city center will still be the heart, especially when they finish the new shopping center. Last time i was there there was the building of a new tower at gunwarf in the shape of a ships funnel to compliment the sail of the spinnaker tower, demolision of summers town tower blocks, new fratton park football ground, new shopping center, plans to update the pier.

I can't stop thinking of Dubai when I see it. Strangely, though, I like the shorter P'moth version, but not the taller Dubai version.

Yay! Go Pompey!

My Other half is from Pompey (well Portchester actually), and even in the past 5 years that I've known him Pompey has boomed. The city is still generally rough as guts, but I think its just started to awaken and certainly has a bright future.

Some of my Spinnaker pics... I love it!

Have they fixed the glass-bottom lift yet? And do they ever change the lighting (red for Valentine's, etc.)?
