DOCKLANDS > Digital Harbour > ~130m / Mixed

Well.. couldn't find an official thread and since the search feature is turned off.. tays please merge if there is one!!

Anyway this project after being probably the most dormant in Docklands appears to be finally underway!!

A report in the paper recently also announced that Stage 1 was about go ahead.. and it would appear so..

Not a great pic but you can see the escavators at work and new construction boarding has been put up all along LaTrobe St frontage..

I hope this the cool binary building!!

Thanks for the pic A-brain!!

BUT.....UUURGGGH!! Please don't tell me that all the Docklands planting scheme is that bloody awful 'eucalypt and dust' look that is blighting Melbourne recently.

It's gonna be so important to make Docklands look as green and lush as possible and this is a really bad start. It's just SO suburban!

Yet another Melbourne tower U/C! I wnet past the site on Friday and there was a lot of work going on. Apart from the usual palm trees all of docklands will be planted with natives.

I think this is a good thing as (combined with the native grasses and dust :-) they use much less water than introduced species, which fits into docklands sustainable design initiatives, and there are already a huge number of introduced trees all over inner Melbourne, it will give docklands a really different look and feel, which is what they want.

dockland's is turning out to be abit of a suburban buisness park by the water with some pretty palm trees if you ask me.

its sterile..

give me the hustle, bustle, dirt and grime of REAL melbourne on the other side of Spencer Street ANYDAY.

Don't forget hunter that the REAL side of Melbourne has 150 years of a head start over the fledgling docklands.

I too hope it's the binary building thats first to go up.

This project is obviously still in trouble stage one, including the tower was supposed to be completed late last year. From those plans they are just building the smallest buildings first.

The podium building will be attached to the first tower, but these plans show a temporary car park where the tower is to go up. So they don't expect the first tower to go up until after these buildings are completed and the $ design is out the window.

Nice looking designs but without the tower it's just a suburban style office park.

Who in their right mind would build technology office space in this environment? Tech companies have spent the last 3 years cutting staff and reducing office space. Ericsson was planning to move from Broady to Digital Harbour but they are in serious trouble (shedding another 7,000 staff worldwide, they have halved their staff levels over the past 3 years). I don't want to be a drag and I hope the project succeeds but I think it's best hope in the short term is being a successful car park.

so true homer.

instead of renovating in Abbotsford, Computershare's new HQ would have been perfect for Digi Harbour

The billboards are up and it looks great. If only we had a few more companies moving in, then we would have a much larger building proposed.

At least it looks like there's actually CONSTRUCTION going on here. There is concrete being poured which is a start, but too early to tell what it is they're actually building. If anyone knows what part of the plan is being built please let us know.

Well this is exactly the reason it's taking so long for Digi Harbour to get off the ground.. but it's an important development long term as the tech market can and will inevitable rebound in the long term..

Isn't the first building they are developing the one on the right in the third pic ?

long term a preety improtant project as you say A-brain. Hopefully a few nice talls can get in there rather than just the planned 100m hotel

oooh, I FEEL THE PAIN, BOYS. YES, I DO!!! Dockie is boring the shits out of me. It's running, boys.

And the "feel" Dockie needs is a few more PALM trees, not gums (unless you're planning on intro'ing some koalas).

Sorry boys.. but this is just typical Old School Melbournian negativity to anything 'new' and 'different' ..

No the Docklands isn't going to have Collins St atmosphere overnight .. but would you rather it had remain a wasteland of disused and delapidated docks where rave parties and drug deals are done ???

Already it is a beautiful destination with landscaping and architecture that hasn't been seen in Australia before .. and so far there are only 2 precincts (Telstra Dome & NewQuay) that have even opened!!

Sheesh.. I know I posted almost identical words about a year ago.. but it's attitudes like this that would have seen Melbourne stay the way it was in the early 80's forever..

Go down there at night time and stand on the Telstra Dome balcony or at NewQuay and then come back and talk..
