which three 19 storeys are you referring to?

Do you also know about the MLA housing project? How tall are those buildings?

There is no dearth of IT / web design talent in India especially in the southern cities. Yet they make such unimaginative websites...Shouldn't we expect something better from Chennai at least..

The Chennai Trade Centre is set up at a prime location in the Chennai metro at Nandambakkam, adjacent to St. Thomas Mount in an area of over 25 acres of land with four modules of 4,400 sq. Meters each of exhibition halls and support services to be built in a phased manner. In the first phase, two halls - Hall 1 (4,400 sq. mtrs.) and Hall 2A (1,848 sq. mtrs. ) have been set up with six metres height to display all merchandise, including machinery. The Trade Centre is architecturally and technically designed to be a " state - of - the - art" Exhibition Complex. The air-conditioned halls have no pillars columns, are thus eminently suitable for multi-purpose use of organising exhibitions, conferences, conventions and conducting other trade, commerce and industry-related events.

Chennai Trade Centre a hit as exhibition venue

CHENNAI, Aug 18

TILL about two years ago, any organisation wanting to hold an exhibition in Chennai — one that required a fairly large amount of space — had to make do with either the large-sized marriage halls or a Government-owned indoor sports stadium.

There were quite a few regular exhibition events in the city — the international leather fair, besides the exhibitions-cum-seminars organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, such as the events on agri-business, logistics and, of late, information technology.

Inevitably, the organisers would complain to the media about the lack of proper exhibition space in the city despite Chennai being the centre of some major events of national and international significance.

With the opening of the Chennai Trade Centre at Nandambakkam, a suburb of Chennai, in January 2001, the organisers of these events are a happy lot. So much so, some of the participants in these events point out that because of the distance from the city, the exhibitions attract only serious visitors.

The Tamil Nadu Trade Promotion Organisation, the joint venture between the India Trade Promotion Organisation and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, now plans to construct a convention hall to go with the exhibition centre. Work is expected to start in a couple of months on the convention hall.

The convention centre, to be built at a cost of about Rs 25 crore, will have about 1,000 seats to begin with, and another 500 seats can be added as demand picks up, according to reliable sources.

The exhibition centre itself, spread over about 65,000 sq.ft., has been jointly put up by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), a Government of India undertaking, and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), a State Government undertaking, at a cost of about Rs 16 crore. The exhibition centre has come up on 25 acres of land, and is managed by the Tamil Nadu Trade Promotion Organisation (TNTPO), the company promoted for that purpose.

The permanent exhibition centre was inaugurated in January 2001 to coincide with the India International Leather Fair. In the first full financial year of operation, a total of 17 events were organised at the exhibition centre. This year, 21 events have been finalised with the possibility of three more being held.

The annual international leather fair is a permanent fixture at the exhibition centre.

The TIDCO, which has about 10 acres of land at the site apart from what it has handed over to the TNTPO, toyed with the idea of promoting a budget hotel with private sector participation. The thinking then was that such a hotel would be a big hit considering the fact that it is adjacent to an exhibition centre and also along a national highway.

According to the sources, while ITPO markets the exhibition centre through its network, serious international marketing efforts, especially in the South East Asian and West Asian countries, are being taken up.

The Chennai Trade Centre boasts of adequate vehicle parking space, 200 lines with BSNL exchange for telephone facilities, public address system with zone control, and service trenches for power, water supply and drainage.

The TNTPO classifies the events at the trade centre into fairs and non-fair events, and charges different rates for the two.

For fairs and exhibitions, the charge is Rs 120 per sq.m. (including the air-conditioning) for indoor space, while for non-fair events the charge is Rs 85 per sq.m.

In case, organisers decide to have an entry ticket, the ticket income has to be split 50:50 between the organisers and the TNTPO.

The two halls are fully air-conditioned. The non-fair events include get-togethers organised by companies, seminars and single product displays.

Some companies that specialise in organising fairs on a regular basis feel that it will be better if the TNTPO follows a dual tariff policy — one for the peak season and another for the off-season — as, they say, they will then be able to bring in more such events.

But, the TNTPO officials say that it is still too early for them to decide which is the peak season and which is not, for them to adopt a dual-tariff policy.

They would also like the Chennai Trade Centre to attract more events before they feel they can tinker with the tariff structure

Sorry to say, but if you juxtapose the two buildings, their architecture doesn't match or even come close by miles. It sorta looks weird, but independently, the planned convention center looks attractive!

Yeah the slyline would look better, but I mean in this day and age why wouldnt you first try and spread arnd as much as possible before you to up. My pt is .. if there no need for a skyscraper why build one?
