What would you do with £1 billion in Sheffield?
Bit of a pointless question I know, but I was just curious as to what peoples thoughts were.
Imagine...... A wealthy bloke came up to you and said, "Here you go mate, here's a billion quid" and the only catch was that the money had to be spent on construction in/ the regeneration of Sheffield, how would you spend the money? Personally i would...... - Clean up and light up the Wicker arches because I think they're stunning - Re-open Victoria station - Demolish the Grosvenor Hotel A.S.A.P! I can't wait for the NRQ it's too long! - Build me a nice cluster around Spital Hill (where the new tower is proposed) - Enlarge the tram system - I'd wait for the Moor to start sorting itself out and if I don't like what I see, I'll buy the whole lot, have a clear out and start over. Can't think of any more 'cos it's late and I'm tired.

I think I would knock down the moor and the dwp buildings and create a mini version of central park in New York surrounded by new high quality apartments.
Also uncover some of the rivers that run under ground through town and make more of a feature of them. |

- Re-open Sheffield Victoria and create a landmark office building beside it.
- Give every major pedestrian area within the city neon blue lights similar to Howard Street as I think too many areas of the city aren't lightened enough at night. - Extend the supertram, including an underground stretch from Fargate to Eccy Road. - Knock down the majority of Castlegate and the moor and start again. - Give all city building a good clean - Turn Hillsborough into Britains best stadium. |

I agree with everyone about Sheffield Victoria (a high speed line to Manchester) and an expanded Tram System.
I would also demolish those horrible flats and build lots of smaller quality houses for the inhabitants. I would build a giant technical / tradesmen college for all kids who want a career as mechanics, plumbers, carpenters, Builders etc. Sheffield would become the craftsman capital of Europe. |

Commission an international competition with the objective to design and fund the actual construction of some high rise and landmark buildings which have to be of such unique design that they will become synonymous with Sheffield the world over.

pobbie, - demolish parkhill flats and replace them with a dark satanic overbearing walled structure? Isn't that what you start off with in the first place?
I personally would bring the Wicker up to scratch, wonderful street with some lovely buildings and great potential. I'd extedn the tram down each of fulwood, ecclesall and london roads, and i'd turn attercliffe into a working populated area of the city again maybe.

i would improve the padestrian access all the way up the westbar hill. there are no padestrian crossings, underpasses or overpasses, its very risky. i would also try to start off a cluster either at spital hill or near city lofts, as well as developing all the land either side of westbars as it is practically wasted & deraliked land.
oh and make a boutique asnd designer clothing area in the city centre - like nottinghams but bigger. ok, you probably wouldnt be able to do all that with 1 billion, but anyway...

I would...
- Build Eclipse - Fix the 'Welcome to Sheffield' bumps on Parkway - Build escalators, stairs and lifts from the bus station to Arundel Gate - Redevelop the Roxy/Odeon site into a larger cinema/restaurant - Reclad the electricity sub-station at the Moore Street roundabout - Improve the pedestrian crossings and increase city-bound lanes to two where St Marys Road meets Matilda Street outside the Royal Standard Pub - Demolish the Laycock and Sons building near the Train Station and replace it with a stylish mid-rise - Completely overhaul and simplify the road layouts and pedestrian crossings from Glossop Road up to and including Brook Hill roundabout. - Demolish the NUM building and replace with a leisure facility - Downgrade Carver Street between Division St and West St to give more space to pedestrians - creating a more defined link between the two areas. - Put something worthwhile in the CIQ to increase footfall in the area, whilst at the same time redesigning the streetscape to make it attractive. - Extend the trams out towards Meadowhead via Shoreham Street or London Road and also to Rotherham Town Centre & Parkgate - Build a landmark tower outside the train station - Fund an extensive study into the transport infrastructure in the city centre, with contingency plans for when accidents block roads etc - Get rid of Wickes and Stokes Tiles (Moore St) and replace with taller buildings. - Incorporate large stores such as Wickes into a Moor masterplan

Id make the city centre in-peneratrable ! it would have a wall surrounding it and arm gaurds on turrets, the only way you are allowed into the city centre is you have to prove you are not either
A: A southerner B: A chav C: A big issue seller D: Homeless E: A market researcher F: A scateboarder G: A goth H: Anyone who cant appreciate sheffield The Peace gardens would be turned into a punishment Square, where anyone found in the city centre with no ID to prove they are not any of the things listed above would be publicy whipped and fisted, it would be aired Live on TV ! I'd knock the mosque down near Abbeydale road and turn it into a HUGE brothel just for AndrewC Id make the worlds tallest statue of me with my arm around Jesus, both of us doing the peace sign with our fingers Oh and I'd treat myself to a new camera !
