What is going on with the top third? No good. Maybe its the angle.

I'd rather have the old version.

EDIT: I stared at this rendering for about ten minutes going from disliking it, to liking it, to loving the Art Deco feel, to being completely confused. I need to see other vantage points and details on the crown.

Whatever.

hiya, guys.

according to an article published today from the Chicago Tribune, 150 East Ontario will house one of the first Edition Hotels, the hot-off-the-presses boutique brand by Marriott International and Ian Schrager. i'll attach it below with the link, but the bottom line of it states that construction of the tower will begin this year and the hotel, to be called The Chicago Edition, is slated to open in 2011.

cheers.

Mag Mile to get one of 8 new Marriott "Edition" hotel
By Kathy Bergen | Tribune staff reporter
1:45 PM CST, January 29, 2008

The wave of plush hotels planned for downtown Chicago is swelling yet again, with hoteliers Ian Schrager and Marriott International Inc. announcing Tuesday that their newly developed boutique brand will be named "Edition" and will debut in eight locales, including along the Magnificent Mile.

Chicago-based Monaco Development LLC is developing the 250-room hotel as part of a 50-story tower planned for 150 E. Ontario, according to Neil Gehani, company president. Construction on the $240 million project will begin this year, with an opening expected in 2011. The tower will include a limited number of very high-end condominiums as well, he said.

Schrager and J.W. Marriott Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Marriott, will formally announce the brand name Tuesday evening, marking Marriott's entry into the boutique market, where rivals such as Starwood have operated for a number of years. Schrager, known for his Gramercy Park Hotel and his co-founding of Studio 54, is often cited as the pioneer of the boutique hotels, with the opening of Morgans Hotel in 1984.

Schrager and Marriott said they have reached agreements with developers for the first nine properties, including the one in Chicago. Others are planned in Paris, Madrid, Costa Rica, Miami, Washington, D.C., Scottsdale, and two in Los Angeles.

Epstein is providing full professional design services, including architectural, civil and MEP/FP engineering for a new $240M, 42-story Hotel and Condominium building along Chicago’s “Magnificent Mile” at 150 E. Ontario St. The project includes a new boutique Marriott "Edition" hotel of 325 keys, with a Sky-lobby, full-floor Spa and Club-Restaurant. The building will also include 25 high-end condominiums, from 1-bedroom units to 4-bedroom duplex penthouses. There are two other fine-dining restaurants at ground level and level two, and valet-parking for 180 cars. The building will feature sustainable design including a 40-foot-tall pyramidal wind farm with numerous turbines. Other sustainable design elements include recycling of rain water and a 100% green roof which will help reduce the “Heat Island Effect” that can increase energy demand and air conditioning costs on residents, as well as help reduce air pollution levels. 150 East Ontario is expected to pursue LEED-NC Certification.

That's awesome news!
I wonder what the "Club-Restaurant" will be like.

I don't know how they can expect to sell condos off Michigan when Ritz-Carlton is having problems with direct frontage. If the price brackets are different, maybe, but I can't see a developer building anything less than luxury here.

Is it possible that hotel revenue might sustain the project for several years until demand for condos picks up again?

^ We're only talking about 25 condos. I'm guessing this project can get financing without any condo sales

Yes, the city's Plan Commission approved it yesterday. 323 hotel rooms and 32 residential units.

The top of the rendering in the Sun-Times is very different from what's seen elsewhere in this thread.

I'm sorry -- I misread the article. It was "likely" to get approval yesterday. It may not have considering the mayhem at City Hall yesterday over the Children's Museum move.

OK likely today for high-rise
May 15, 2008

BY DAVID ROEDER

A revised plan for a new high-rise hotel near North Michigan Avenue is expected to get approval today from a city agency.

The Chicago Plan Commission has scheduled a vote on allowing a 43-story building at 150 E. Ontario. It would contain a 323-room hotel plus 32 residential units.
