Abu Dhabi Group to build South Asia’s tallest building

Commerce Reporter

LAHORE: Plans are underway for the construction of the tallest building in South Asia. The Mubarak Centre, at 1947 feet is to be completed by the end of 2012, at an estimated cost of $1.2 billion.

The Mubarak Centre will be constructed under private-public partnership of 30:70 between the Pakistan government and the Abu Dhabi Group, respectively. One the newly constituted board, the government will be represented by the Secretary Finance, Chief Secretary, and Chairman Planning and Development and the Abu Dhabi Group will be represented by the Chairman, Sheikh Nehyan Mubarak Al-Nehyan and the group's CEO, Mr. Bashir Ahmed Tahir.

The 72-storey high Mubarak Centre will house both residential and corporate towers as well as conference halls and shopping malls. The first phase of the project is expected to be complete by 2010, while the project in its entirety will be completed in 2012. The complex will consist of four towers, an ellipse shaped building. The main tower will be a towering 72 storeys high with the first 30 floors will be reserved for shopping, while floors 31 and above will be given for residential apartments. The remaining three towers will be between 30 and 40 storeys high, with the ellipse-shaped building nestled between these. The ellipse-shaped structure will house within it, uniquely designed apartments, the largest reception and conference halls (designed for 3,500 to 4,000) in the country. There will be a 5 storey shopping mall adjacent to these facilities. In the main tower, the Hyatt Residency will manage exclusive, premium, residential suites. Park space will also be provided for over 4,000 cars to complement the quality of services available. A covered overhead bridge or an underground tunnel will connect the Mubarak Centre with the Gaddafi Stadium Sports Complex.

To manage the project, the government and the Abu Dhabi Group have formed a holding company, Taavun (Pvt) Ltd. for the Mubarak Centre. Pakistani and foreign companies will be participating in the construction of this project. The height of the building will make it visible from India, and on clear days the residents from the building will be able to see the Golden Temple in Amritsar (being just 50 km away from the building).

The centre represents the largest foreign investment by any group in the country, and with the completion of the Mubarak Centre the investment of the Abu Dhabi Group in Pakistan will surpass the $ 12 billion mark.

LOL! You'll have to ask a Lahori that. All I know is that the one on the right is the Gaddafi (Cricket) Stadium. Its the Largest cricket stadium in Pakistan. Can seat 60,000 people. My Lahori cousins said that when its Flood lights are on, it really brightens up the whole surrounding area.

I think it's a small airfield used by flying schools, not an airport. And it won't be as close to the airfield as it looks, but only cessna's land there anyway. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
