Double Dark Day for Atlanta
Not only do they lose the NASCAR hall of Fame, they potentially lose one of their fortune 500 headquarters. I'm a Charlottean and even I have some pity for our World Class City big sister that we are trying so desperately to emulate up here in the QC

Not landing the HOF wasn't a loss.
Can't really comment on the AT&T/BellSouth situation though.

What the NASCAR HOF was for Atlanta was a bruised ego, otherwise a large number of people did not support the HOF in the location selected, not to mention the funding mechanism (me included). What you don't have doesn't hurt you anyways...
Losing BellSouth - though it won't be economically drastic, will in my view hurt the civic community. Andof course it will be a greater bruise to the ego, as was losing Georgia Pacific & Scientific Atlanta, not to mention Delta filing chapter 11 & Suntrust continuing to be mentioned as likely merger candidate. 3rd thread on the subject by the way... |

Callous though it may sound, I only have one question: what will happen to the Bellsouth building next to the Fox? Will the logo at the top be replaced? Will it even be used anymore?

BellSouth was the big loss here. It was a great corporate citizen. We wonder what will happen without it. BTW, Brad, who is looking to merge with SunTrust? I've haven't seen any news on it. The last I heard of any company looking to merge with SunTrust was Wachovia a few years back and I haven't seen anything on that since. Of course, over the past few days, I have become increasingly worried about Delta, whose pilots have gone on strike. They say that a pilots strike could "Cook" the company.

Atlanta is Charlotte's granddaddy...they can take the punches. This won't even put a ripple in their numbers. LONG LIVE ATLANTA!!!

^ironchapman: They've already gone ahead with the strike? I don't remember seeing anything in the news about it.

Dark day? Hardly. Companies change just like business in general changes over time. The Business Chronicle made the point that since 2000 Bellsouth has cut three times the number of jobs the metro is likely to lose as a result of this merger and in a major city with a dynamic economy, this will be no more than a hiccup.
We are lucky that the HOF is going to Charlotte because a tourist attraction is the LAST thing this city needs to spend millions on at this point. |

Actually, I was thinking about driving up to Atlanta next weekend. But given the events of the past few days, I guess I'd better ask ... will Atlanta be open ?

Sigh... and calling Chicago a world class city is not very believable for someone living in New York.
For the most part, people's decisions on what constitutes a world class city is very subjective. The only objective measure I know of was defined by Loughborough University's Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network. According to their measure, Atlanta is level three gamma world city. Chicago is a level two alpha world city. So there is no question that Chicago is a higher level of world city than Atlanta but that doesn't prevent Atlanta from being one at a lower level.
