Wow, Those stainless steel columns really bring out the brightness thus marble floors kinda too dark IMO.

Overally impressed with all those high-tech looking facilities, doors, signs, hand-rails as such.

Msocow Subway - Safety Levels Deteriorating

Safety levels falling on Moscow subway network: union

MOSCOW, Nov 9 (AFP) - Moscow's grandiose subway network is becoming increasingly unsafe due to neglect and the lack of a functioning emergency evacuation system, a transport union said on Wednesday.

"The safety situation has deteriorated drastically since 2003," said the president of the independent metro union Svetlana Razina, who has worked as a metro train driver for 33 years.

Dozens of technical faults and fires had been "covered up by the management" this year, she said, though none had caused any injuries.

"There were not so many accidents before. It's very dangerous," the union chief told a press conference.

The technical problems could halt trains in tunnels sparking panic among passengers, particularly as "the ventilation does not work because the engines have not been replaced since 1935" when the metro was opened, she cautioned.

The subway network, considered one of the great engineering achievements of the now-defunct Communist regime, marks its 70th anniversary this year and transports nearly 10 million passengers daily.

Fellow union member Nikolai Gostev advised passengers not to use the subway for more than two hours per day due to the "noise, dust and a lack of oxygen".

He also criticised the absence of a viable evacuation system, which had left some 20,000 passengers trapped underground during a large power failure last May.

"Specialised vehicles were not deployed to evacuate passengers because those in charge did not give the order" while "equipment meant to save passengers in accidents are not being tested", Gostev said.

Old Metro Cars Endanger Passengers, Workers Warn
Stephen Boykewich
11 November 2005
The Moscow Times

A trade union is warning that Moscow metro trains are in urgent need of repair and that negligence by metro management is putting 9 million daily riders at risk.

But metro head Dmitry Gayev insisted on Thursday that the system was safe, and said the union's charges were motivated by a labor-management dispute over wages.

Svetlana Razina, a representative of the Moscow metro drivers' union, said as many as 96 percent of the system's lead cars had cracks, as did 90 percent of the wheels.

"Do you know how the administration has responded? It has issued instructions to clean the cracks, paint them over with white, yellow or red paint and monitor them," Razina told reporters Wednesday, Gazeta.ru reported.

The last reported accident in the metro was in June 2003, when a train car ran off the rails during the morning rush hour after its wheel carriage cracked. Two passengers were hospitalized with minor injuries and nine others were treated for panic attacks.

Another union representative, Nikolai Gostev, said an hours-long blackout that immobilized six metro lines in May showed poor evacuation planning by the metro's leadership.

"The evacuation of passengers was very poorly organized," Gostev said, Gazeta.ru reported. "The trains sat in the tunnels while the directors made phone calls. Only after 40 minutes was it clear that the passengers needed to be evacuated." About 20,000 passengers were evacuated from trains that were stuck between stations.

Metro chief Dmitry Gayev said the cars were growing old but stressed that the metro was safe. "Aging equipment is an issue, but we have a system of preventative repairs and replacement of parts," Gayev said by telephone. "We don't allow any kind of violations that could potentially put passengers at risk."

The reason for Razina's and Gostev's charges "is very simple," Gayev said. Metro workers' salaries are adjusted at the end of the year, and union officials want to demonstrate that they are fighting for workers' interests, Gayev said.

He also said that the union represented fewer than 100 of the 35,000 Moscow metro workers.

The dispute came two weeks after Moscow hosted an annual meeting of directors of the world's largest subway systems. Gayev said the meeting concluded that "Moscow's metro is the most reliable in the world."

The metro, which consists of 12 lines and 171 stations, turned 70 this May.

Interesting how elements from the "classic" Moscow metro stations are combined with modern designs. Especially Trubnaya looks very classic.

The only truly secure system is one that is powered off, cast in a block of concrete and sealed in a lead-lined room with armed guards - and even then I have my doubts. Gene Spafford.

I like the modern designs, and in particular that entrance to Slavianskij Bulvar. Bilbao, Madrid and London subways currently build very cool entrances to their new stations and it is time that Moscow would pay attention to this as well, maybe even redesign some of the standard boring ones that are already there. It is great that they are going to rebuild that open station; I hope they plan to do it with all open stations of this kind.

I agree with Mirco. It's great to see that cost cutting hasn't ruined the amazingly decorated look of the moscow subway, although the Slavyanskiy Bulvar seems a bit bland. An extremely wonderful system.

Moscow Subway Tunnel Collapses

Moscow Subway Tunnel Collapses; No Injuries
19 March 2006

MOSCOW (AP) - A section of tunnel collapsed in the Moscow subway Sunday, triggering a fire on a train, officials said. No injuries were reported.

Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Viktor Beltsov said a concrete section fell on a train between the Sokol and Voikovskaya stations in north-central Moscow, and that train caught fire. Rescuers safely evacuated all passengers, he said.

Train service was halted.

Moscow subway chief Dmitry Gayev said the accident apparently was caused by workers who were erecting a street billboard in the area and damaged piles supporting the tunnel's roof, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

A fleet of ambulances and fire engines responded to the subway stations, creating huge traffic jams. Authorities launched additional buses for travelers.

Gayev said subway service will be restored Monday morning.
