Interesting - looks like it was a station built on an existing line.

Web site cheers up grim Moscow commutes
16 September 2008
Agence France Presse

For commuters on Moscow's metro system long used to surly faces, rattling wagons and muffled-up travelling companions, a new website offers a chance to cheer up their daily journey.

The website "V Podzemke" (In the Underground) registers users according to the metro station on which they live or the line that they usually use, facilitating encounters in Moscow's grand but anonymous metro stations.

Site designers told the Izvestia daily they are at the testing stage and have 500 users registered so far. The idea came to one of them when he moved to Moscow and found that he recognised a lot of the faces at his usual metro stop.

"We want to turn metro rides into a pleasant journey, to create a friendly environment," designers said on the website vpodzemke.ru, which also has a map of the metro with pictures of registered users on the different stations.

New Moscow Metro trains

Moscow Metro is replacing its stock very actively at the moment. Lines 3 (Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya) and 4 (Filyovskaya) are almost completed now with 81-740/81-741 series .1 modification.

Next are Lines 5 (Circle) and 8 (Kalininskaya).

Circle line will get 81-740/81-741 series .4 modification. Unlike previous 4-doors modifications 81-740.4 will have 5 doors, while 81-741.4 will have 6 doors.

First 3 cars are almost completed for inspection and trial runs.

They're a bit underwhelming to be honest, don't really look that modern. I guess they're meant to not look too different to the existing trains?

81-740/741 series is modern.

81-714/717 series was introduced in 1977. It's still widely popular around the world. New modification includes new nose and modern electronics.

They look a bit like toy trains; they're basic and pretty dull. I guess if they're better then it doesn't really matter.

Very poor design indeed, and they're still very loud. I hope, Polish manufacturers will propose sth more interesting for the Warsaw second line...

In a 70-year old metro system? 81-740.4 will already seem out of place on circle line stations

81-714/81-717 have a pretty balanced look, though.

I'm certain coth's first three images (the //metroblog.ru ones) reveal a whole new fleet, while the remainder (the nomernoy.ru ones) plus the video show some refurbished fleet.

To me it seems like they didn't want to get a "modern" look for the trains, but retain the same feeling of the old cars. It is historic in its own way. No one would change an old-style chandelier in a classic-styled living room, even if it's 100 years old.
What matters is that the new cars are quieter and more comfy (I guess they are).
