What matters is that the new cars are quieter and more comfy (I guess they are).
The "81-714/81-717 series .6 modification" is a modernisation project for existing trains. On the Nomernoy page, the three photos at the top show the trains before modernisation ("До модернизации" means "before upgrading", according to Google Translate). The modernised trains have a new front, but that's probably the most that can be done to make them look more up to date.

May be those trains didn't get a "modern" look but I like them. They seem pratical and confortable.

Yes, in a 70-year old metro system. Some "fresh air" would help a lot, IMO.

I like much more old russian trains, sound and noise and it feels like accurate metro )) + the best design vs Moscow metro architecture.

The renovated train also gives a old feeling.

But the new train design is ugly.

I like the design...

Why do they have to go for the conventional "ultra-modern" look? As long as the trains are safe, sturdy and efficient, along with being passenger-friendly, they're fine in my books.

Besides, how would an ultra-modern train look in Moscow's beautiful subway system? It might look a bit weird!

An updated proposal for 2025 general plan of Moscow. It's very rough plan. For exact plans there is Metro development plan. 2009-2015 plan should be approved later this month.

320km of new metro lines according to this plan. This require heavy federal investments, so if federals will reject to provide them, then just 160km.
