First tested in 1961. Was in trial usage since 1968. Wasn't giving much benefits and was a bit buggy. I remember guide rail on line 8 was dismantled in 1990's.

Some history

It was not effective in Moscow's rush hours. But experiments were continued in Saint-Petersburg (Leningrad those days).

Moscow surprised by a large underground construction. So the biggest metro in the world, and continues to evolve.

It's not biggest in the world, though. Shanghai and London have much bigger systems

Moscow has the 5th largest metro in the world.
1)Shanghai
2)Beijing
3)London
4)New York
5)Moscow
But it is likely to become a 3 within 10 years. However, Guangzhou is growing very fast and possibly earlier than Moscow would be 3 in the world.
Separately need to say about Tokyo and Seoul. There's a huge system of rail transport, but the actual subway is now lower than in Moscow
Sorry google translate

You don't forget Shenzhen that plans to open some 100 km of metro this year.

Paris intends to expand its metro system, too, by adding some 200 - 250 km in the coming years.

Shenzhen will overtake Moscow, but after Moscow will overtake London. I know that at least 5 cities apart from Shanghai and Beijing in the future overtake Moscow, but still it will not be in the next 10 years. Unless Guangzhou.
Plans in Paris a lot, but only 9 stations under construction.
Sry Google translate.

A tourist in Shanghai needs to be able to speak, read, and understand at least one of: Mandarin, Wu, or English. If you only know Russian, find a travel companion who speaks English or Mandarin well to go with you.

South part of line 6 is partially closed on March 9-11 due to repairs after a short circuit and a fire in a line control system room.

Are there any plans for the metro to eventually reach Kubinka and the tank museum there? What is the best way to get there now?

No, there are many areas that need for Metro inside the Moscow borders.

There doesn't seem to be any population there.

There are no any significant number of residents around newest Moscow Metro stations ("Rumyantsevo" and "Salaryevo" - they both were opened this year) as well. It's need always to think about future and to create transfer transport points (although this particular scheme is for far perspective).
