They also managed to put one here, and I have not heard of any plans to remove it

The station got its name after a Soviet poet Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930).
The unique station hall features thin pylons faced with embossed stainless steel. Pillar corners are lined with Orlets stone and Sadakhlo marbled limestone. The ticket hall is covered with light-grey Ufaley marble and Shrosha limestone from Georgia. Track walls are faced with Ufaley marble and diorite, while the floor has a pattern of white marble and grey and pink granite. The vault of the station hall is adorned with oval niches with brilliant ceiling mosaics by People’s artist Alexander Deyneka (1899-1969) with the theme "24 Hours in the Land of the Soviets".
The design of the station won a grand prix at the New York World Trade Fair in 1938. The station became an architectural monument in 1980-s, and in 2001 the Government of Moscow made a decision to put “Mayakovskaya” into the list of local historical and cultural monuments.
For your undestanding, I would like to clarify that sickle and hammer are part of the original station design, and no new sickle and hammers are being put anywhere in Moscow metro. But I suspect you are simply trolling.

The only truly secure system is one that is powered off, cast in a block of concrete and sealed in a lead-lined room with armed guards - and even then I have my doubts. Gene Spafford.

Exactly. The suicide bombers on the London Underground detonated their bombs manually which didn't require a mobile reception.

1) We are not putting the Sickle and Hammer symbols everywhere. Last station, where Soviet symbolic was used in decoiration, is "Krasnogvardeyskaya" (1985).
2) We are not removed Soviet symbols from the old stations, because it requires money and makes a dissonance in the image of the stations. It's like to remove all Christian symbols from the paintings of the Renaissance artists due to participation of the church in the Inquisition.

Not so bad, considering that most of them were built in last decade.

19 were opened since 2000, including 5 light metro (financially light heavy rail - elevated with 80m long trains) stations. 2 station were fully renovated - total cladding replacement, new electrics, new escalators etc. 1 was updated structurally. At least 5 stations got new cladding.

2 more will open next month.

Does the Moscow Metro make a profit?

I remember it used to be the most well used Metro/subway system in the world (according to Guiness) but now it may have been over taken...

And with all those millions of people riding the metro every day, I wouldn't be surprised if the economics were there to allow for such expansion and upgrades.

It may still be the most used one, because in Tokyo there is double counting of passengers using the two systems (when they transfer from one to another).

I do not know recent numbers. It changes year to year. In the past it has usually been slightly profitable, and this, as far as I know, continues to be target, but it does not happen every year.

Income covers operating expenses and renovation. New stations are built using federal and city budget. Recently they experimented with private investment.

Although operating expenses and new construction are covered by different sources, IMO, you are correct in pointing that having a profitable system (or at least the one that does not require subsidy to run) helps to expand. In those systems that require subsidy to cover operating expenses there is always a big question if the amount of money required to run the system would also increase following the expansion. Thus, it hard to justify expansion of a system that requires subsidy to run. Moscow metro has proven to be profitable for many years, and thus can expand without such fear.
