You are lucky then. I remember large patches all over large sofas in old trains made before middle 70's. Haven't seen vandalized seats in new trains either. But usually broken seat is a reason to withdraw a train from service. And it takes now just few minutes to replace. So might be just because of this.

On the deep level lines, of course they are narrower. On the sub-surface lines the difference probably isn't much.

What is suburb in Moscow term? Moscow is a large city with huge territory. It's a separate federal subject of Russian Federation (which known as "city of federal status"). But there are many small towns near Moscow City, which are parts of Moscow Region (it's a another federal subject of Russian Federation with own regional government).

Currently there are going construction in the Moscow areas, which located close to city borders (majority of them were included into city territory 50 years ago). But the station "Myakinino" (2009) is located on the territory of Krasnogorsk town, outside the Moscow City. In 2012 will be open station "Novokosino", which will be located in Moscow, but just few meters from the Reutov town. So, of course, Moscow Metro serving the suburban areas, because many residents of nearest towns are working in Moscow and they are using Metro to ride on work.

MosMetro is used to serve city core but not suburbs. Also new lines are projected for densely built-up areas. Sheremetievo is normally connected with Aeroexpress, buses and taxis.

So its not strictly within the city limit like NYC metro. Thanks.

Does Moscow system use Smart Card for fares?

Also, I don't have time to look for it this weekend because I'm traveling to DC, but if possible could you please post what the Krasnogvardeyskaya side of the interchange looks like? I don't remember if that station was built in 1985 with a future transfer to another line in mind.

I've been wondering about suburban usage of the Moscow metro for a while. I was at the Vykhino station at the east end of line 7 a few years ago, and I noticed that it's the site of a huge hub for various buses and marshrutkas to the nearby suburbs. I imagine it's the same at some of the other terminal stations. But I was reading about the new "перехватывающая парковка" that opened at Annino station at the end of October. I assume this means "park-and-ride" (P+R). The article (http://www.vesti-moscow.ru/rnews.html?id=139060) said this was the first in Moscow. But isn't there a park-and-ride at Myakinino or Volokolamskaya? Or maybe this is the first P+R operated by the Moscow metro.

EDIT: I've looked into this. There's an article out today about parking at Moscow metro stations (http://www.rbcdaily.ru/2011/12/02/focus/562949982194052). Here's a summary.
1. A free 833-space parking facility has opened at Cherkizovskaya station (Line 1).
2. Next week, two free parking facilities with a combined capacity of 700 spaces will open at Vykhino station (Line 7).
3. By the end of the year in the Eastern administrative okrug (district) of Moscow alone, eight parking facilities will open with a total capacity of 2195 spaces, according to the Eastern district website, including the five below:
Ulitsa Podbelskogo station (Line 1) - 124 spaces
Pervomayskaya station (Line 3) - 40 spaces
Izmaylovskaya station (Line 3) - 123 spaces
Partizanskaya station (Line 3) - 254 spaces
Perovo station (Line 8) - 51 spaces
(these all add up to 2125; I don't know where the other 70 are)

There is also a 1200-space parking facility at the new station Zyablikovo at the site of the old Krasnogvardeyskiy market, with another 450-space facility to open soon, according to the article. Vedomosti says 2500 spaces already open at Zyablikovo (http://www.vedomosti.ru/companies/ne..._stancii_metro)
